  • Mine is going to be a machine for high winds. Its gonna be higher wing loading and way overpowered. I'll post something if it flies well.

  • I forgot to ask. HOw does this one do on a windy day.? I needed something tough and small for wind, so I ordered one. I guess if I fly fast enough I'll be OK.

  • 9gm motor sounds too small. I would go with a 15-20 gm motor around 2000kV

  • your props miles to small is my idea

  • I made a second mini, used the HXT 9g 3500kv motor. Right one? Pretty small. Anyway, I can't get enough thrust to get the thing to fly. It sinks and lands. I compared thrust to my first mini, and the first mini with the Potensky motor seems to have a lot for thrust. I've tried a few different props, no difference. Got any idea?

  • Prop mounted the right way? COG ok? Except for that, no, no idea. I used that motor in two different planes, a 120g shock flyer (Virus XS) and the warbird, and both planes flew ok (with a 400mah 2S lipo).

  • And I find almost nothing on the prop/motor selection, other than you, and the review site. I have the Potensky 20W HL recommended (got it on sale). Am I OK with a 6X4 prop? The 4.9 X 4.3 HL said to use, does not fit in any way shape or form. I dry ran the 6X4, seemed OK for the short time I tried it, fast acceleration, though, resulted in a funny motor sound, kind if like slipping.

  • Beware the Rarebear. The elevator servo, when mounted where shown in the directions, interferes with the right aileron. Maybe on the other versions as well? I wound up making a small cutout in the aileron to make it go around the servo. Receiver I put towards the front, in the bottom, similar to reviewer. The stupid prop I got from HL didn't fit, and when I tried to make it fit like the reviewer did, it broke. Got to go find what really needs to be done there. Hope to fly soon.

  • I had the same problem with the elevator servo, and came up with the same solution (cut some foam from the right aileron). Doesn't seem to affect flying though.

I did some tests with different props (multiplex 5x4, gws 6x3, gws 6x4). There wasn't much difference, so I decided to go with the smallest one. Had to drill it out a bit, and then had to use a small piece of paper to remove all play. Props and motors, always a bit of a problem...

  • I am building one of these (rare bear). Did you put the dihedral shown in the instructions in, or less? I put in the recommended 45mm, but my dihedral looks way more than in any picture I've seen of it on the web, including yours. Also, where did you put the receiver and battery?

  • My dihedral is about 45mm as well. Strange that it looks a lot less.

I put the receiver in the body, behind the aileron servo. Slit the epp in two and carved a hole in both pieces. Put the receiver and glued the pieces back together with UHU-POR.

Since I couldn't decide on what type of lipo to use, I velcro'd them under the body, just in front of the aileron servo. Not as nice as it could be, but now I can adjust the COG by moving the lipo forwards or backwards. Also swapping lipo's is easy.

  • I got a RareBear as well, as a backup for the Strega. Wings are a bit higher placed on the body, which should be good for rolls. Also, the RareBear's nose is a bit shorter, and probably a bit more durable.

I would like to see your RareBear fly when it's finished ;)

  • Thanks for the info. I'll post a video when I get it done. With the RareBear, it looks like you have to cut the foam away on the piece under the wing to make way for the aileron servo. The instructions aren't the clearest. You put the receiver behind the wing? Did that make it hard to get the CG right?

  • I have no problems with the COG, since I can change the location of the lipo.

The guy who did the review (press 'more info' on the right) put his receiver in front of the aileron servo. I think I would do that as well, since the RareBear has a shorter nose.

  • I have to get me one of these. If I could learn the Storm Launcher, I can definitely learn this, right?

  • I think the Storm Launcher is more difficult to fly, as it looks more twitchy.

On the other hand: the SL comes RTF, whereas the Hacker Warbirds are kits. So you need to cut, glue and solder. See the link under 'More info' on the right for a build log/review.

  • Exactly, so this should be easier to control? And I can with the cut, glue and solder problem.

  • I think it's easier to control, but I have never flown a Storm Launcher - just seen some videos.

  • From what I can see this one is much easier to control, but I'm in the US... so, I guess eBay is the only choice for me.

  • Hobby-lobby sales these mini reno racers for $50.

  • Oh, awesome. I'll check eBay and see if the prices are lower.
