Yes diesels burn on compression only. They are much more efficient than gasoline engines. a NEW STOCK diesel truck vs a NEW STOCK gas truck,,,,,,,the diesel  ford,chevy says burns cleaner. once you work on a diesel and see black smoke your (carbon footprint) is way bigger than a STOCK GAS burner.

diesel puts out less pollution than gasoline... that black "smoke" you see isn't smoke, its called soot "diesel dust" and it settles to the ground... also diesel puts out 40% less carbon pollutants than gasoliine...
