It is a Boa Constrictor (Red-tail) and they are harmless. They will not strangle anything larger than what they can eat (generally nothing larger than the widest part of their body). The bite is nearly painless (but scary). Paper-cuts hurt worse. They only bite a grown person if provoked or scared.

Yeah having worked at a zoo that had a really big one I have to agree. We used to let kids come up and pet it, sometimes a whole line of them would hold it. Completely harmless snake.
