US automakers have caught the Japanese in quality, and even surpassed them. Especially now with the recalls. Union workers work their butts off, have dangerous jobs, suffer many repetitive motion injuries, and deserve every penny that they make. They have gave up tremendous amounts of benefits to return the big 3 to profitablity.

I would not let GM management off the hook on this one. They were just too generous in the past, made some horrible engineering decisions, and failed to take the japanese seriously. Look at Ford. They are not in trouble like GM is. GM has some serious internal issues that are not necessarily union-related. Although the UAW worlers at GM definitely have to get real or get out.

My first grade teacher told me not to use words unless I know what they mean. What part of this is 'pure socialism?' Workers have the RIGHT to organize. Denying that RIGHT or 'making the UAW concede' is far more un-American. The gov. has stacked the deck in favor of bosses for years. Why no deregulate the U.S. labor market by repealing Taft-Hartley? That would allow natural labor/capital dynamics to play themselves out naturally without gov. intervention. That is the antithesis of socialism.

On one of his press conferences one member asked him to repeat his question into the mic so audience could hear, but he refused. Typical Union attitude. Watch them at the plants putting cars together, none are lifting anything they demand robots to do all their work. They make good money too. I don't feel too sorry for the assholes.

Just because the UAW could do a better job doesn't mean that unions are bad. Same way that just because Bush and co. have taken our inherited public wealth and turned it over to the already wealth doesn't mean that Democracy is bad. Know the real enemy, folks. Rooting for your working class neighbors to have their paychecks slashed will not help the economy. We need more people making more, not less. And do you really want to set a precedent that says the Senate decides what a fair wage is?

Sorry. You need a new scapegoat. The 2007 UAW contract means new hires earn less than their counterparts at Toyota plants in the South. They receive no pension and no health care in retirement.
