WKYC actually managed to ditch the Gannett news theme! They are now using 615 Music's "Propulsion" - and a pretty killer cut at that.

WGRZ: They now use a brand new opening with the newly updated Gannett graphics. It's interesting because it goes back to the cold opens they used before graphics were standardized yet use new graphic elements not used on other Gannett stations. User kelvint has it posted now and he in 1080p quality.

@tommyboy6181 That is such a substantial improvement. If only the hideous "Gannett music" would finally be disposed of, it would be a knockout home run. Of course anything WGRZ does is automatically 1000% better than anything the bankrupt WKBW tries to trot out.

@myronfalwell WGRZ went HD today and their first newscast in HD is at 11pm. It's a shame that they had to change a good logo to what they are using now with the HD broadcasts.

Brian Williams did the VO work for WGRZ as a subtle nod to Buffalo native Tim Russert, who was slated to do the opens before his untimely death. I heard that Brian was replaced recently.

WKYC's open is good (sponsor ads notwithstanding) but I'd wish they use the "NEWS" tag instead of "wkyc-hd." They recently unveiled newer "coming up" graphics that now use the NBC peacock feathers. The Tower is also still sorely missed around here.

KUSA and WTSP are THE gold standard among Gannett opens.

@myronfalwell Yes, WGRZ did go back to using Roberta Salomon when they were named the Best Newscast in NY state. The opens were redone to show that.

Although now Roberta was replaced by the anchors themselves in the opens as they now use a cold open with newly updated graphics. However, Roberta does most of the station promos now. The cold open is probably the 5th or 6th version they've done since the new graphics came out in October 2008.

@tommyboy6181 Also since WGRZ started the Rundown (which later became standard on all Gannett stations), they also have the newest looking Rundown which actually matches the graphics package.

WXIA: Wish they'd update it. WUSA: Wish they'd bring back popular "Eyewitness News" branding. WTSP: Glad they got rid of the "10 Connects" branding. KARE: Still no Gannett theme music... they must love their theme music. KSDK: I agree about their opening being mediocre. WKYC: I'm not very fond of the ad in their opening either. WGRZ: Bill Ratner, Chris Corley, or Roberta Solomon are among popular v/o choices... Brian Williams as v/o seems new. KTHV: That talent opening needs to go.
