I don' think it's very open-ended. The way the baby stopped crying in his arms meant that he's a more honest soul than others, thus making his story the most believable. What a great film. Just when you thought it couldn't get anymore interesting, it does.
It even shows this sinful need for flattering falsehood going beyond the grave - even the character who dies cannot give up his lies when he speaks to the living through a medium. Egoism is a sin the human being carries with him from birth; it is the most difficult to redeem. This film is a strange picture scroll that is unrolled and displayed by the ego."
Love this movie, so I'd like to share how Kurosawa explained the story (from his autobiography): "Human beings are unable to be honest with themselves. They cannot talk about themselves without embellishing. The script portrays such human beings the kind who cannot survive without lies to make them feel better than they really are.
@seongmanlee3 This story is more open ended, in the sense any of them could be telling the truth. This play is basically talking about perspective. 4 different people/witnesses give a testimonial in different ways that are extremely biased and have variations in the story. The goal of this play is not who is telling the truth, but how each person has a different vision (biased or unbiased) on the same situation. And also why witness testimony can be unreliable :)
@kinjou00sekisan No, a lot of people have watch this movie since 1950, haha. It's joking. But, look how different meaning has your question, and how different can be the answer. Just the Rashomon matter!
