Took me absolutely ages to get into this album. I was really starting to think WTF. But I had listened to enough of her stuff already and loved it, so I persisted and haven't been disappointed. Its a fascinating music really and completely deserving of the effort I committed to it. I have noticed that this album was mainly canned when it first came out by the critics and was also a bit of a commercial flop. Now it's regarded as a classic. Sort of reflects my own experience I think.
@LadyGaGaMonster4Life Hey now, the UK has produced many great artists who have made epic masterpieces! But I agree it's one of the greatest albums ever. It's her Kid A.
I was fresh out of Basic Training when I heard this in a record store in San Antonio...My first thought was "Where has this beautiful voice been all my life?" Just one of the reasons I volunteered for the UK (1985-88) and helped me fall in love with a magical country...God bless her, and Kate...
omg this song sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it over 25 years ago. love it , The Dreaming is my favourtite KB album, just one thing in it me or him, and I love life, so pull out the pin..................
Oh england my lionheart, breathing, moments of pleasure, this womens work, wow, Don't give up( peter gabriel), hammer horror, coffee homeground, kashka from baghdad, symphony in blue, and breathing. i think these will get you properly into her music :)
@thebiglebowski1993, to truly get what Kate Bush is about I'd start with some less obvious tracks, like The Fog, Big Stripey Lie, Delius, Nocturn, The Ninth Wave, and the entire The Dreaming album.
for sillmoorox, all these songs are great. Army dreamers, pull out the pin, the dreaming, suspended in gaffa, sat in your lap, there goes a tenner, babooshka, night of the swallow, janie and the cold gun, wuthering heights, get out of my house, them heavy people, kite, cloudbusting, december will be magic again, running up that hill, pi, how to be invisible, hounds of love, the big sky, the kick inside, the man with the child in his eyes, never be mine, rubbernand girl, houdinni, leave it open.
thanks, and ye she is great, her and david gilmour are IMO the 2 greatest artists ever. And i think that movie is perfect, the other night we were watching the big lebowski and my mates hated it, so i put kate bush and pink floyd on and they hated that music as well, at least some people understand about these stuff.
sillymoorox, i was exactly the same as that last byear, as i was just a new fan and i liked only about 10 of her songs, then after a while I became a big fan of her, and believe me songs like this are as good as wuthering heights, try listening to Oh england my lionheart, you should like that. if you want a list of her good songs, just ask me.
And when i wrote "his discography" i obviously meant "her discography". Yeah, i keep making lexical errors, but humor me i just took 10 mg of hydrocodone and ive been awake for 27 hours straight. Either way my eternal gratitude to Symphony of Flowers for making this haunting, unsettling, and yet unmistakeably beautiful song (along with many other gems in the Kate Bush canon) available to us youtube types. Love the pictures too (she is as eccentric as she is gorgeous!)
i think one of her best songs is army dreamers and im guessing she did that earlier in her career? if i am wrong then please correct me as i am a very new fan as i only just discoverd her but i dont really think this is anything big compared to wuthering heights and army dreamers??? i know i am only a new fan and i do not know much about her music so if i am wrong about anything then please correct me! by the way if anyone could tell me more names of her songs then i would be truely gratefull! x
This song was never realized as a single (and is relatively obscure compared to her hit songs) and, yes, it was preceded by "Army Dreamers". The song itself is written from the perspective of a Vietnamese soldier feeling a sudden sense of empathy and shared humanity with an American GI he is on the verge of annihilating. With this album Kate entered into her more experimental period (culminating in the phenomenal "Hounds of Love" album)
When i wrote "realized" i meant "released". If you like this era of her work i would recommend "Watching You Without Me", "Big Sky", " The Dreaming", "Running up that Hill", "Get Out of My House", "The Sensual World", "Mother Stands for Comfort" and "Breathing". If you are interested in her hit singles than you I would recommend you simply look up Kate's Wikipedia article and refer to his discography. Lucky you discovering Kate Bush for the first time.
Apart from us ppl who have liked her music throughout i was referring to the earlier stuff kate did like there goes a tenner sat in your lap a lot of ppl remember wuthering heights who dosent but not those songs and wouldnt have necessary listened to the early stuff even though she has changed her style she is still the queen in my eyes !!
"Real" fans realize that she was always the real Kate Bush. Just because she slightly changed her style doesn't mean she wasn't the real Kate Bush. Who are you to say who she really is?
you dont have to agree but i am roughly the same age as kate and i think her earlier stuff is the real kate thats my opinion and am entitled to it you dont have to like it
I think this is the best track on The Dreaming, along with the freaky, hilarious "Get out of my house", the last track. All of Kate's stuff is so haunting and timeless, she is in a league of her own and always will be...
Yes, it's from the Vietcong point of view. The song is based on a documentary that Kate saw when she was younger. In the film the Vietnamese had a little Buddha in a chain around their neck and when they went into action the put the Buddha in their mouth so they could die with Buddha on their lips. You can read more about it in the dictionary section on Gaffaweb if you want to.
Yeah, that just dawned on me a few months ago after a few years of listening to it. I always loved it, but I love it even more now I fully understand it. Kate's an amazing artist.
Best album of Kate Bush as far as I'm concerned lyrically and musically. Experimental, artistic, no boundaries...way ahead of its time. Meant to be listened loud to find all the layers. Amazing work. Even to this day, it is the one album that I listen to. Hounds of love might have achieved commercial success and it is a good album but The Dreaming is a league of its own and timeless
This whole album is beyond art. It is like my bible and my zen. Hearing it completely opened my mind up to this fascinating world. No one comes close to writing this kind of music.
I agree with indexcodex. I must have listened to this album a billion million times and it will always gives me goosebumps. My most favourite from Kate.
Hi, I'm from Israel and I was in high school when this record came out and I LOVED it. I loved all of Kate's records, but especially this one. Can't believe it's more than 20 years ago. Still sounds great.
Amazing collection of great images. Where did you find those pictures? Sparking the imagination just as much as her music does, great staging. And I too like the buddhas! :)
That sounds strange. Since you live in the UK it should be easy to find. I did a search on HMV and found it. And your local record dealer should be able to order it for you.
the song is wonderous so thoughtful and sexy. is it about the vietnam war??? "yanky hash" and "my silver buddha" ref to vietcong and them blowing themselves up to kill the invading americans????
"Just one thing in it:
Me or him.
And I love life!" gives me goosebumps!
