Although I do have Wheel & Jeopardy marked "HD" on my Directv guide for WROC 8 HD, they're still being shown in SD (cropped to 4:3) despite what the guide says!

Each local TV station broadcasts its own shows in what even level of definition they want. Sometimes it costs more money (like for the bandwidth required to transmit of HD) to broadcast HD and the station opts not to broadcast in HD. Also, you must subscribe to HD service from your satellite/cable company. For example I recorded this opening on WPBF (West Palm Beach, FL) but the station in Miami, WPLG, does not broadcast it in HD.

You're right about that, but I'm still not seeing Entertainment Tonight in HD, although the same affiliate also broadcasts the local newscast in HD... I also have HD service from my cable company and I'm watching the specific HD channel on my HDTV... is it something with the NBC affiliate?

That's not true. HD Local channels are required to be offered to you by your cable provider free of charge. You just need a HDTV with a QAM tuner which most new ones have today. And the only reason WPBF and WPLG showed them in SD was because they didnt have the recording equipment to record the syndicated shows in HD for their local system. WPLG purchased this for their new station where they now are and WPBF bought the equipment about 7 months ago.
