first off it did take damn near 20 years for people to get 1/5 of what they asked for. these people are shitheads who dont care about anyone but themselves.
How many of you are aware that Exxon are still hiring ships with single hulls in 2007. The accident in Korea this last week could have been a ship on charter to Exxon. The dollar still means so much more than the future of the planet to these uncaring oil companies. These guys are as bad as the politicians - all talk and little action.
the fact is, double hull is a farce, it wouldnt have prevented the valdez, the gash was too deep, same for many other spills. International law makes double hulls mandatory by 2014; US law makes them mandatory by 2010, every company is complying with this, yes, even exxon. EVERY shipping company uses single hull petroleum ships, they are perfectly legal until 2010 in the US. You should be more concerned about the IMO law and substandard foreign flagged ships with substandard crews in general.
They should have taken care of it in the beging versus drawing it out and prolonging it as they have been. Big oil is above the law in there eyes,But in mine they are the same as us. what a liar this man is. I know people in cordova that have yet to see it in black and white.
In black and white, Exxon was responsible for the disaster, they promised to make us 'whole' again, and have not lived up to their word. Their lies and disdain for the fishermen, businesses, cannery workers and people of Prince William Sound whose lives were devastated by this tragedy (we're talking 32,000 people!!!) shows that we cannot deny that corporations have outgrown the US justice system. It's time for Exxon to pay.
Ross has perfectly captured the extent of Exxon's lies. Almost 18 years later our fishermen are still waiting for compensation, many of them now dead. The fact that this court case still "lingers" (much like the oil on our beaches, and the devastation to our fishery) demonstrates the US legal systems inability to protect the people of this country.
Holy shit Corbett should do something honorable and fall upon his sword...Thank you Ross and Thanks to UTube..what a great environmental resource signed former Prince William Sound fisherman dpc
Exxon still has not made good on their promises! They have spent millions of dollars on their lawyers to deny justice to Alaskans still suffering from the effects of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill!
If you want to read something really frightening about tanker ships, google search "Maritime Security by Bonesman322." It's all about how maritime capital interests have established legalized slavery off America's coast, in part by using the Mafia to undermine organized labor. If you're investigating the Exxon-Valdez spill, you'll definitely want to read it.
Populations of herring are still repressed in many areas due to overfishing. Take Auke Bay for example. The population there is still trying to recover after the resource was depleted from overfishing that occurred in the early 90's.
How about the large former bio-mass of herring around the Cherry Point refinery complexes in Puget Sound. They are on the verge of extinction. Your emphasis on overfishing does not apply to Prince William Sound. The year of the spill the herring population was at historic highs. Then a major disease outbreak occurred (likely due to stress induced by spill effects and the lack of plankton that was observed for several years directly after the spill}
I agree the exxon oil spill was a major disaster, but the collapse of the salmon fishery is much more complex than an oil spill, as this video would like to convince you to believe. The Alaskan commercial fishery would have fallen apart anyways -- communites that were unaffected by the spill were still hugely affected by changes in market conditions brought on by fish farming, overharvesting, and unfavorable oceanic habitat conditions.
How do you figure the disappearance of the herring resource in Prince William Sound? All other areas of Alaska have robust herring stocks to this day. This is kind of hard on those of us fishermen that counted on herring each year for half of our incomes.
If your a big fat greedy corporation like Exxon, you can get away with anything. The environment, people's health, and their livelihood doesn't mean a thing when it comes to profits.
This video clearly demonstrates that Exxon has not lived up to the promises made to fishermen, and that the system is incapable of ensuring accountability.

it turns out the dual hull ships aren't really any better in the long run just because of the way corporations do things... think about it...
