This was originally called "Gospel Boogie"; written by Lee Roy Abernathy in 1947 and first recorded by his Homeland Harmony Quartet the following year. Johnny Cash once claimed that this song inspired him to consider a career as a gospel singer.
@moproducer According to Lee Roy Abernathy, it was not originally called "Gospel Boogie". He said that the people named it that because they would call radio stations and say, "Play that gospel boogie." So he added the subtitle "Gospel Boogie" to it. That's from a video I have on the history of Southern Gospel music showing a clip of Mr. Abernathy.
@CathedralsRecords my grandpa is a bass singer (not a famous one) and he knew George personally. George said Tim Riley was actually deeper than him. i never realized George started as a tenor.
I love this song!! untill just now I had only heard the Gold City Quartet sing it (with Tim Riley) George's voice is lower than Tim's but Gold City's version is better (just my opinion you know how those are lol) anybody know where I might be able to here (anything) sung by J.D. Sumner? I've never heard him (of course I've head of him just never head him sing).
You've got to admit although Glen was the lead singer, on some songs that man would get low! Like real low, especially toward the end of his life! Like on the song "If I can Help Somebody" and "We Shall See Jesus" man he really surprised me. Him and George were by far the best two singers of this era in quartet music.
Well, George was one of the cleanest most natural bass singers. But, JD sang it in the late 1950's with the Blackwood Brothers as a young man in his early 30's. And I hate to say it but his voice was bigger, fuller and just as clean as George's in that cut. I have all the early recordings to compare.Although, George was my all time favorite bass soloist. I ain't got none now. All the basses sound alike. I just play my records of George, JD, The Chief, And London Parris.
@Nashville35 I've great respect for you, seeing George as your favorite bass singer. I've got no bass singer found as well. Did you got a new one in the mean time?
@Nashville35@Nashville35 I've great respect for you, seeing George as your favorite bass singer. I've got no bass singer found as well. Did you got a new one in the mean time?
This was about the time I first met the guys, which was 1974. The new lineup then was what you see here.
Earlier, Roy Tremble, who had been singing baritone, started singing tenor after Bobby Clark left for the second time. By 1974, George Amon Webster, who had been on piano for about a year, switched to playing bass when they hired Haskell Cooley. Webster, Tremble and Cooley all left in 1979.
Ernie was probably 10 years old; hey, he might have been a pretty good soprano!
This was around 1975 or 1976......George Amon was around 31...I don't know how old Ernie Hasse is....Going to Ernie July 18th...If I get the chance I can ask
Wikipedia says Ernie was born in 1964. Personally, I thought he always looked a lot younger than that. When you see him, ask him how he stays so young looking, lol.
I still prefer him to J.D. Sumner. Granted, George couldn't hit the double low C, but who cares? George is the best overall gospel Bass there ever was.
George could sing Eb below C. That is a mear step and a half above double low C. So he wasn't as low as J.D. but very close and definately a better singer with a more pleasing sound.
@newyoungamericans Oh, I gaurentee he could. He just didnt choose to. I hit a Eb1 which is only 1 and a half steps away and he hit that in his later days. There is no doubt in my mind that he was capable of the C1
Maybe the old video has gotten a little grainy looking over the years, but the wonderful sound and message still comes ringing through all the way ! Nice posting hoover4000. Thanks, really enjoy it over and over.
This is my favorite lineup of the Cathedrals. I was doing house sound at their three-day appearance in St. Louis back in 1976, and spent an afternoon 'jamming' with George Amon, Roy and Haskell. They suggested that I join them on guitar for the rest of the tour. I've lived to regret not taking that generous offer. My life might have turned out a lot differently...
I grew up going to every Cathedrals concert I was able to go to. These guys have a special place in my heart. There are some good bass singers in southern gospel right now, but what made George so good is that he was a singer. This song illustrates that in that his phrasing and perfect pitch on every note is right on. I might be partial because I too am a bass singer, but I think George's voice was the most beautiful in the group.
This video is probably my favorite that the Cathedrals sang. It really touched my heart when I heard that song. Hi, I'm a 16 year old preacher from Fountain Independent Baptist Church. If you want to know more of me, let me know.
At one time they all pretty much did that. I think part was people being individuals, groups trying to be out of the status quo and maybe even things like membership changes happening so often, it was less expensive to just wear your own thing so if someone left, you didn't have to look for someone to fit the suit (great shades of Johnny Bravo ;-)),or buy new ones,
Lack of knowledge on your part, cannot take away from one of the most amazing voices ever. Just so you know a sound system is not what made these guys great, it`s ability.
During a troubled passage in my life in the early eighties, I began listening to a Christian FM in St. Paul; they'd often open the morning drive with "Wonderful Grace of Jesus" by The Cathedrals. Opened my day and my heart to God's grace. Sadly this FM has changed to a more Christian-rock format, but in my own heart, The Cathedrals will never be fogotten. Thanks to Hoover and all others contributing for keeping this fabulous musical ministry alive.
The other two are Roy Tremble, singing tenor, who now resides in Anderson, IN. The other fellow, the one playing the bass guitar, is George Amon Webster, singing baritone. My brother travelled with George Amon in 2006, and George now resides in FL. It was pretty cool, on several occasions, to have a former member of the Cathedrals sleeping in the very bedroom that I used to lay awake most nights dreaming of singing with the Cathedrals.
i'm very frustrated because i used to always listen to this song while i had the tribute to george younce dvd, but sadly i lost it, but thanks to you i can once again listen to one of my favorites

George actually started out as a tenor until his voice changed, and he thought he had lost his singing voice but he was really just getting it!
