  • Love the really deep voice!

  • wow i love it

  • who is singer Tenor and baritone here?

  • was this video before scott fowler???

  • FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Love,

    Di

  • My dad sang this --- he was also a bass singer -- in a quartet. This brings back many memories.

  • This was originally called "Gospel Boogie"; written by Lee Roy Abernathy in 1947 and first recorded by his Homeland Harmony Quartet the following year. Johnny Cash once claimed that this song inspired him to consider a career as a gospel singer.

  • @moproducer According to Lee Roy Abernathy, it was not originally called "Gospel Boogie". He said that the people named it that because they would call radio stations and say, "Play that gospel boogie." So he added the subtitle "Gospel Boogie" to it. That's from a video I have on the history of Southern Gospel music showing a clip of Mr. Abernathy.

  • George actually started out as a tenor until his voice changed, and he thought he had lost his singing voice but he was really just getting it!

  • @CathedralsRecords my grandpa is a bass singer (not a famous one) and he knew George personally. George said Tim Riley was actually deeper than him. i never realized George started as a tenor.

  • ultimately heavenly music. love ya george

  • I love this song!! untill just now I had only heard the Gold City Quartet sing it (with Tim Riley) George's voice is lower than Tim's but Gold City's version is better (just my opinion you know how those are lol) anybody know where I might be able to here (anything) sung by J.D. Sumner? I've never heard him (of course I've head of him just never head him sing).

  • @MrKyledude18 You should listen to Tim Riley more. I don't think George was lower. I love George but Tim is my all time favorite!

  • @MrKyledude18 actually tim is lower then george, tim has been know to sing at 2 hertz

  • You've got to admit although Glen was the lead singer, on some songs that man would get low! Like real low, especially toward the end of his life! Like on the song "If I can Help Somebody" and "We Shall See Jesus" man he really surprised me. Him and George were by far the best two singers of this era in quartet music.

  • Great song! Even the papapapa's are just delicious to hear! Someday I hope to meet George in heaven, and enjoy his superb bass voice....

  • WOW! Thats George?

  • Well, George was one of the cleanest most natural bass singers. But, JD sang it in the late 1950's with the Blackwood Brothers as a young man in his early 30's. And I hate to say it but his voice was bigger, fuller and just as clean as George's in that cut. I have all the early recordings to compare.Although, George was my all time favorite bass soloist. I ain't got none now. All the basses sound alike. I just play my records of George, JD, The Chief, And London Parris.

  • @Nashville35 I've great respect for you, seeing George as your favorite bass singer. I've got no bass singer found as well. Did you got a new one in the mean time?

  • @Nashville35 @Nashville35 I've great respect for you, seeing George as your favorite bass singer. I've got no bass singer found as well. Did you got a new one in the mean time?

  • Lee Roy Abernathy

  • His voice is awesome!!!!!!

  • was this b4 ernie haase?

  • um. yeah, way before LOL this was in the 1970s. i dunno ernie's exact age but he probably wasnt even old enough to drive yet haha

  • haha... thanks. i started liking the cathedrals when he was in the group, so i don't really remember anything before him...

  • Ernie Haase - 12/12/64

    You're welcome :)

  • This was about the time I first met the guys, which was 1974. The new lineup then was what you see here.

Earlier, Roy Tremble, who had been singing baritone, started singing tenor after Bobby Clark left for the second time. By 1974, George Amon Webster, who had been on piano for about a year, switched to playing bass when they hired Haskell Cooley. Webster, Tremble and Cooley all left in 1979.

Ernie was probably 10 years old; hey, he might have been a pretty good soprano!

  • @hoover4000 haha Yeah..I'd say Ernie was in diapers here....if he was even born.

  • @hoover4000 in the 1970's, Ernie was the ages of 6-15

  • @hoover4000 I'm not sure Ernie was even old enough to walk when this was done.... he's pretty young. lol

  • This was around 1975 or 1976......George Amon was around 31...I don't know how old Ernie Hasse is....Going to Ernie July 18th...If I get the chance I can ask

  • Wikipedia says Ernie was born in 1964. Personally, I thought he always looked a lot younger than that. When you see him, ask him how he stays so young looking, lol.

  • I still prefer him to J.D. Sumner. Granted, George couldn't hit the double low C, but who cares? George is the best overall gospel Bass there ever was.

  • George could sing Eb below C. That is a mear step and a half above double low C. So he wasn't as low as J.D. but very close and definately a better singer with a more pleasing sound.

  • I agree!

  • Agreed. George had a lot smoother, cleaner and clearer voice than J.D. - And an Eb1 is still incredibly low.

  • @newyoungamericans I like JD Sumner, but George is champion for this song.

  • @newyoungamericans Oh, I gaurentee he could. He just didnt choose to. I hit a Eb1 which is only 1 and a half steps away and he hit that in his later days. There is no doubt in my mind that he was capable of the C1

  • @newyoungamericans Tim Riley?

  • Classic Gospel sound through & through !

Maybe the old video has gotten a little grainy looking over the years, but the wonderful sound and message still comes ringing through all the way ! Nice posting hoover4000. Thanks, really enjoy it over and over.

  • The BEST bass singer EVER! George = AMAZING!

  • Young George and Glen! we have this and George's last concert appearance in 2005! WOW

  • George was sensational when he sang with the Blue Ridge Quartet too.

  • I love how low is voice is

  • Hmm...looks like all of Cathedrals lead voices used to play bass guitars...I didn´t know George Webster played bass guitar...

In my opinion, Mack Taunton is better than Roy, can you post some video with George Webster and Mack???

  • dont you mean all the cathedrals baritone voices? cause glen was the one and only lead singer

  • Glen Payne was the lead. It's the baritones that did the bass work.

  • This is my favorite lineup of the Cathedrals. I was doing house sound at their three-day appearance in St. Louis back in 1976, and spent an afternoon 'jamming' with George Amon, Roy and Haskell. They suggested that I join them on guitar for the rest of the tour. I've lived to regret not taking that generous offer. My life might have turned out a lot differently...

  • This guy was blessed with the deepest voice I've ever heard..

  • i sure would love to sing this is church! i would greatly appreciate it if anyone could share the lyrics with me. thanks!

  • It's actually George Amon Webster and Roy Tremble lol

  • George singing bass, Glen on the lead, George N Webster on baritone, and Roy Trimble on the tenor.

  • George Younce was the best bass singer in sg music. Cathedrals were my favorite.

  • I grew up going to every Cathedrals concert I was able to go to. These guys have a special place in my heart. There are some good bass singers in southern gospel right now, but what made George so good is that he was a singer. This song illustrates that in that his phrasing and perfect pitch on every note is right on. I might be partial because I too am a bass singer, but I think George's voice was the most beautiful in the group.

I can't wait to see them all again in glory.

  • great singers....i like them

  • wonderful music--thanks

  • George is clearly the greatest bass ever. He was a fine Christian gentleman and had a strong. blameless testimony.

  • This is my all time favorite song the Cathedrals so far. Hi, my name is Daniel and I'm a sixteen year old preacher.

  • This is also one of my favorites. I'm a 15-year-old Christian singer from Harvest Baptist Chruch.

  • This video is probably my favorite that the Cathedrals sang. It really touched my heart when I heard that song. Hi, I'm a 16 year old preacher from Fountain Independent Baptist Church. If you want to know more of me, let me know.

  • man w/e happened to all the members in the quartets dressing the same?!?!??! i always loved to see this it just looked so cool

  • At one time they all pretty much did that. I think part was people being individuals, groups trying to be out of the status quo and maybe even things like membership changes happening so often, it was less expensive to just wear your own thing so if someone left, you didn't have to look for someone to fit the suit (great shades of Johnny Bravo ;-)),or buy new ones,

  • If you see some of the Cathedrals videos with Kurt Young, you'll see he's wearing different clothes than everyone else.

  • George Younce is clearly one of the best bass singers in southern gospel music!! My favourite!!

  • George Younce was one of the best bass singers in southern gospel music!! He's one of my favourites!!

  • If you want to download a complete concert of the Cathedrals from 1987 then head over to my website "brograrysblog dot com"

  • love the bass!! and the harmony is just fantastic.. it's beautiful!!! this is great!

  • mann those boys bad!! that bass is great...interesting arrangement and wonderful harmony!

  • From what I understand, The CQ's bassist George Amon is with the Toney Bros. organization and Roy Tremble has his own Solo Ministry. Just FYI.

  • George, sem comentários...

  • Well, now, everybody's gonna have religion and glory

Everybody's gonna be a-singin' that story

Everybody's gonna have a wonderful time up there

    Oh, glory hallelujah

Brother, there's a reckonin' a-comin' in the mornin'

Better get ready 'cause I'm givin' you the warnin'

Everybody's gonna have a wonderful time up there

  • Maestro George Younce, yo quise verlo cantar en vivo pero no pude, es mi cuarteto Favorito.

    Siempre presente.

    Carlos Alcaino Aburto.

  • George Amon's bass guitar is vibrating my bass amp on my computer!

  • Think what J.D Sumners voice would do to it. in his lowest key.

  • Blow the speakers?

  • ANY voice amplified loud enough could blow speakers.

  • Lack of knowledge on your part, cannot take away from one of the most amazing voices ever. Just so you know a sound system is not what made these guys great, it`s ability.

  • sweet, gotta love the greatest bass ever!

  • gran gran video y George Younce notable como siempre =)

  • Love George & Glen, sure miss them.

  • someady can post the lyrics

  • During a troubled passage in my life in the early eighties, I began listening to a Christian FM in St. Paul; they'd often open the morning drive with "Wonderful Grace of Jesus" by The Cathedrals. Opened my day and my heart to God's grace. Sadly this FM has changed to a more Christian-rock format, but in my own heart, The Cathedrals will never be fogotten. Thanks to Hoover and all others contributing for keeping this fabulous musical ministry alive.

  • Younce > all other basses

  • LOL!!!

    Cute! :o)

  • Glory Hallelujah!! :) Thanks for posting.

  • Wow...they have brown hair!! I love seeing them young!!

  • I say the same words that michaelp23atjunocom.

  • God Bless

  • i miss goerge singing bass....

  • How could he sing bass that fast? George was truly a great.

  • What's that last word in the line - "heaven's even better than a malzodrene"?

I can't find the complete lyrics online - evidently they weren't PC enough so that verse was edited out.

  • The lyric is "heaven's even better than a miser dreamed"

  • The bass is the best

  • The message for all times.

  • PRAISE THE LORD

  • awesome!

  • I have to say thanks to hoover4000 for taking the time to put all these great Catherdrals videos on the web. Great stuff!

  • Who are the other 2 gentlemen singing with George and Glen?

  • The other two are Roy Tremble, singing tenor, who now resides in Anderson, IN. The other fellow, the one playing the bass guitar, is George Amon Webster, singing baritone. My brother travelled with George Amon in 2006, and George now resides in FL. It was pretty cool, on several occasions, to have a former member of the Cathedrals sleeping in the very bedroom that I used to lay awake most nights dreaming of singing with the Cathedrals.

  • Pure legend

  • if you only knew how much glen ment to me

  • Hoover, you're really great .. you added so much southern gospelvideo's .. Thank you so much!

  • i'm very frustrated because i used to always listen to this song while i had the tribute to george younce dvd, but sadly i lost it, but thanks to you i can once again listen to one of my favorites

  • WOW I really enjoyed the blast from the past. I started listening to southern gospel in the 70's that is my parents took me to my first concert. Thanks hoover4000 :)

  • I love George!
