What fluidity in his execution of what's going on in his mind/soul. No everyone can appreciate his music, but for those that do, it's very fulfilling to say the least.
@ct323rx Fine.........The very fine musicians playing in this clip are great players, of that there is no doubt at all. Personally, this clip leaves me a bit "cold". It doesn't really connect musically with me. It doesn't move me like say listening to Jaco or Abe Laboriel does. I know it's from a tuition DVD but if you watch Abe or Jaco's tuition DVD's, These are the real deal. Musically, spiritually & technically. That's my "twopeneth" in anyway :-)
@SyBass6 "t doesn't move me like say listening to Jaco or Abe Laboriel does."
Point taken. At least you aren't saying anything foolish, like comparing Bill Dickens to the White guy who plays bass for the Red Hot Chili Peppers lol
thats because only 3 people on 3000 have the i.q. to understand that 3000 notes fo tha solo, and the rest of the people only wants noise, lights shows, and some guy moving his head like he have epilepsy
this is outstanding! for you haters, dont fear the natural progression of the bass. Technique and improvement of amplification of this instrument as well as a natural curiosity to take the instrument beyond what others have done drives this type of music. Robert Johnson was great at his time for what he did, but so was Hendrix, Van Halen, Eric Johnson, Vai, Satch etc. Respect your history but dont be afraid of pushing things forward.
I'm not hating. It's just that Jaco made alot of guitartists want to play bass. I happen to love funk bass and could care less about the skill or classic study or any of that crap necesary to become a jazz snob. I have not met one guy into jazz that wasn't a music snob. Give me bootsy or larry or louis. Jazz is for old farts and music snobs. from that pespective I guess it is classical :-)
@Bjorlin1 lol... regardless man the guy fucking PWNS. besides, the most OVERRATED player is les "i'm quirky for the sake of being quirky and only idiot metalheads listen to me" claypool
@WoWintosh they have for a long time. Worth noting, many peavey shells are actually milled out of solid wood blocks, instead of wrapped layers of thin ply wood.
@iPodGaming This blows, in the U.S.A. that means it is of low quality, it is not good or off-putting. It's slang. Happy I could be of linguistic help.
@Roflmop if you really believe that the amount of tickets sold tells you that the music is good, why you`re even wasting your time watching/commenting this video? modern jazz/ jazz fusion is basically music for (serious)musicians, so do yourself a favor and go waste you money on some burnout doped up rock star and get high too while you`re at it
@Roflmop sure didn't sounded like a joke, because is pretty much a fact now days. But i did like your joke on "serious" musician. Much better than the other one
@amentjam Yes, because people like Phil Collins or Michael Jackson deserve no recognition of their talent as artists because their music belongs to a genre mainly occupied by talentless idiots. Be less narrowminded ffs ...
Bobby Rock on drums. Bill warms up with a 1" thick piece of rope under the strings for even more tension. I've seen a few Namm jams with many of todays greatests, no one plays after Bill. just sayin
@Blavits Most guys like this do because they have more controll. Pretty much any really good bass player you find will wear a bass like this. It's just easy to play funk and jazz with it nice and high.
@ilovemysr505 moving the bridge saddles back would effect intonation yes but it wouldn't effect string tension anyway. He is playing with what looks like a pretty light touch so that is some of it. the bass is 35inch scale which helps with keeping strings tight. generally higher gauge strings are higher tension. Also, different brands of strings or sometimes have different tensions.
to VUlterer Idid not know that is what a hamster fart sound like I geuss when you are at that level you can understand things like that. Mr. Dickens is one of the fastet players around stay off of here if you don't understand jazz improv.
Bobby's sounding good here, but doesn't he know that he needs at least another bass drum, two remote hi hats, and a few more Chinese cymbals to play jazz in a small group?
i respect jazz and everything, i like listening to all sorts of music. i can also appreciate the technical skill needed to play solos such as this. but there is something about fast jazz bass solos the sounds like donald duck having a fit! thats in no way a bad thing. =P
@Stereogun If you allow some joker to affect your thoughts... you've got to question your own intelligence and integrity. I'm just saying...
