Let me also note that Carpenter (model for Maurice) was an advocate of rural living & of a vegetarian diet--he was way ahead of his time, as I noted. One of the greatest Englishmen of all time. He & his partner George lived their lives in a repressive time but went for freedom--just like their fictional counterparts did!! And were happy for it!!! Our Walt Whitman would have approved!!! Isn't it nice to have a gay movie w a happy ending? Much superior to Brokeback Mountain in that respect.
@lonelysymphony YES> This scene is soo sensous, so remarkable, so ahead of its time. Shows what remarkable actors Rupert/James are--they chucked any inhibitions 4 the advancement of where the characters were--making the right choices for Maurice/Scudder and what needed to happen--an explosion of wanting each other. Not all actors are willing to do this. Its a very sensous scene, much more sexual and thrilling in a way than anything on xtube--because love is involved, not just their bodies.
@k3ngarbage YES! Don't we live in happier, more open times as gay men? lets drink a toast to those who didn't have it so open like Wilde, Carpenter, Whitman--they were pioneers for freedom. Justt this past week gay marraigepassed in the state of WA! Unheard of 10 years ago. We got some ways to go, you are right, but the gay freedom train is a comin.
@brian121698 It is from the Maurice soundtrack, an original composition by Richard Robbins. I believe this track is called "Clive and Anne" but I'm not sure. It is out of print but very worth owning. You can find it uploaded on YouTube as well.
I read that this is based on a true story Forester knew of:) The real-life couple were in fact an upper-class guy & a tradesman, who gave up everything to be together. They actually did end their days together happily living a simple country life,& had many friends. This beautiful clip is evn more remarkable to me b/c the actors said it was the 1st scene they ever did together! They just went for it! xx thankx
@skyemcleod1 Good for you! & do you know who that was? Edward Carpenter and his lover George Merrill! Carpenter came from upper class & Merrill from the working. They had one of the first long term gay relationships in England, very happy, & somehow escaped the draconian laws that ensnared Oscar Wilde. Carpenter was way ahead of his time & was an amazing writer on free love. The hippies could have learned from him. The above clip is more romantic & sexual than anything I've seen on xtube!!
The most beautifully romantic scene from the most beautifully romantic movie of all time! This scene takes my breath away every time I watch it. I love the part when Maurice gathers Alec into his arms for that kiss!!!
@marshhen, @lilaclad: curious to know why you think Maurice 'does not end well' or shows 'the tragedy of lost love'? Are you very invested in what happens to closeted/repressed/married Clive rather than Maurice/Alec? For others (and by EM Forster's intention) this is a 'for ever and ever' happy ending (admittedly one in which we will never know what fate brings Maurice and Alec after the credits roll...)
This has to be one of the most romantic scenes in any movie, ever, and one of the best kisses. This movie introduced me to the gorgeous and talented Rupert Graves, for which I'll always be thankful. Yowza, both he and James Wilby are beautiful in this.
When I was just a teenager, without any stories to relate to, I had the good luck to see this film and it gave me one romantic story to hold on to the way that straight teenagers might take for granted. There are thousands of stories for them. I just needed a few and this gave me immense hope even though it does not end well.
Alec Scudder's kisses are filled with anger, hunger, and a really amazing love.

I love the way Rupert is half whispering into his ear and half kisssing it. Very natural scene considering they are two heterosexual actors.

For some reason, I thought it Scudda and Rupert Everette. Rupert Everette was "Another Country" with Hugh Grant.

You were right E. M. Foster, when you dedicated MAURICE to a happier year,
today a man can marry another man.
there is a long road to improve our lives, but IT REALLY IS A HAPPIER YEAR !

I feel like girls like guy on guy action more than guys like lesbian action. But in a different way. A more emotional way.
