No. 706 is pictured making it a P-32AC/DM. The reason why it is a "32" and not a "40" or "42" is because it has less HP due to the extra space taken up by the duplicate electrical components for the dual modes that would otherwise be the 4 extra cylinders in the P-40 and P-42. As a result the P-32AC/DM only has a 12-cylinder engine while the others have a 16-cylinder.
The locomotive is definitely not a P32; the P32s, among other things, are numbered in the 500s. The P32s also have a more boxy front end. Most of the P42s are numbered in the single or double digits, or triple digits up to 207. According to what I've been able to find out, it is a P32AC-DM (DM=dual mode: capable of running on diesel or electric power), which is different from a P32 despite the similar designation.
well, simply put, P32's are known as Dash-8's, common reference that sets them apart from the rest of the "P" series. They are mainly a freight locomotive, with Amtrak's small lot of them being the exception. Any more questions?
The P32-8BWHs or the P32ACDMs are both P32s despite the different body shapes, it's the same engine under the hood (with the addition of electric pickup for the ACDM). The above loco is still a P32 even though it looks like a P42.
Look it is not a p32. It is a P42. The diffrence is the P42 has only 2 axles on the rear and front truck. P32s only has 3 axles on the front and rear trucks.
that is a P32DMAC - FYI - down here on the Hudson Line you will not likely see anything else. MN 201-227 + CDOT 228-231 + AMTK 700-717 are ALL P32DMACs.
Alright dude, here' the thing: P42's are #1-207, k? This is in the 700's, meaning it's a P32AC-DM, designating it's 3,200 hp, and runs on either its own power, or electrified third rail. I'm also a steam fan, and I do know better than you. And, what's more, if you're such a big steam fan, why are you watchin an Amtrak video, one of the biggest enemies of steam?!

Nos. 1-207: P-42DC
Nos. 700-717: P-32AC/DM

I'm an Amtrak employee and I certify you are an idiot. There are three locomotive types using the Genesis Body style;
Generation 1: P40DC: Numbered AMTK 800 - AMTK 840... 7FDL16 (16 cyllinders) engine producing 4000 Horsepower.
Generation 2: P42DC: Numbered AMTK 1 - AMTK 207... Updated 7FDL16 engine producing 4200 Horsepower
P32ACDM: Numbered AMTK 700 - AMTK 717... 7FDL12 (4 cylinders less) engine with DC-AC Converter, GEB15 AC traction Motors, and 3rd rail pickup shoes.

MarkConductor775 3 years ago
now thats really nitpicking. one companies timetable's engine page shows it one way the other shows it the other way....
nhlives 3 years ago
well, that's how Amtrak lists them. Passenger, 4,200hp, Alternating-Current/Dual Mode.
MarkConductor775 3 years ago
if Amtrak lists these as 4200 HP then there really is a problem.
nhlives 3 years ago
woops, meant 3,200 hp.

trainz675 4 months ago
@NWRRSteamPower thats a P32, change this. Amtrak has P42's from 1--207, you should change, if you dont, well, its misleading text.

This is the Lake Shore Limited, and those cars that look like bi-levels are actually single level sleepers known as Viewliners.
