  • A few qs.

    1. Before i started to change the brake pads and bleed the system, the brake pedal was mushy while the vehicle is on.

    2. I bleed the system according to the procedure, now the pedal is hard when the car is off but as soon as i turn the vehicle on, it's mushy again.

Is there a problem with my master cylinder? Do i have to replaced it or can i just bleed the master cylinder?

  • thats a ford either 5.8 or 5.0 , 1982-1989

  • 1:35

  • a+

  • good video, too hell with all them assclowns that hate it....cuz they dont know sh-t, thats why they watching this

  • does it really matter in what order you bleed lines? if so why? thanks

  • @WhoAr3You

my guess is new brake lines, or master cylinder

  • ok so I have a 97 mercury mystique and recently had to replace a faulty rear brake caliper on one side and went ahead and replaced the other one as well. I was trying to bleed the the whole brake system and noticed that no air/fluid comes out of the rear brakes. What could be wrong?!Help!!...

  • Thanks man, very informative and straight to the point!

  • all of my fluid leaked out when i took the hose off, and my pedal goes to the floor now that its back togethor, now i just put more brake fluid in? dont tell me i will have to take them tires back off again! lol

  • After seeing a few of the other how to vids on bleeding brakes, this one is the most thorough and methodical. Some of the others do not show the proper sequence of starting at the furthest caliper and working your way to the closest. Others are unsafe, messy, or just flat out suck. Thanks for posting this golden oldie.

  • lol this is so 80s. Good though. :-)

  • ok guys i just changed my rear pads and rotors and i took out the brake line for both of them as i had to twist the calipper piston in order for it to push down....so when i was done, i tried pumping my brakes and when the car is off it pumps a little and doesnt sink all the way but when i turn the car on the brake pedal sinks all the way down and brakes dont work at all....

what is wrong do i have to bleed the brakes cuz i didnt? and how come no brake works at all its like failed brakes...

  • @fktheworld2

u got air in ur brake system so u have to bleed ur lines

once u take off ur brake lines from the calipper air will get access to your brake system

make sure that u bleed all the caalipper as the video above take ur time bleeding your brake system

  • Anyone notice the helper is pressing brake with his left foot?

  • @sippeyxp Because it's easier to see what he's doing. If he used his right foot to press the pedal, his left leg would block the view.

  • This narrator is clearly from Minnessota, or Canada.

  • @Fr0stByte14

    lol

  • ok i have a 1990 Dodge caravan, and iv replaced the master cylinder, booster, and break line on the right side that was leaky.I bleed the breaks and they pump up untill I start the van the pedal goes to the floor????any answers????

  • @brucekirk89 did you bleed the master cylinder prior to installing it?

  • Very heplful. Thanks

  • Lol, this looks like an archaic auto school vid. I love how it assumes everyone drives a 25 year old domestic lol.

  • So how does air get in your brakes in the first place? does it mean there has been a protrusion in the line somewhere?

  • @warner4455 In my case, it means that my mechanic is a lazy cock.

  • @warner4455 Brake fluid just naturally absorbs air, and so you should do this every 3 years. (Recommended) but honestly no one ever does. I am only just now doing it on my car after 5 years, and only because I replaced the struts and had to remove the brake lines, allowing air in.

    Short answer, it just happens.

  • Oh damn lol I remember my automechanics teacher showed us this in class, no wonder this looked familiar to me.

  • Makes Sence

  • Best vid on you tube well done :)

  • canada, EH!

  • old shop vid

  • 1. Keep master cylinder full

    2.Check Bleeder Operation

3.Start at bleeder farthest from master cylinder

4.Pump brake pedal to build up pressure

5.Open bleeder until pedal drops to floor

6.Repeat until no air bubbles are seen from bleeder

    7.Repeat at each bleeder

    8.Top off the master cylinder

  • BORING! YOU F..K BALL! BORING!

  • Reminds me of those 80's movies I use to watch in Health/Phys. Ed. Best video I've found so far nonetheless.

  • Spot on, EXACTLY how it is supposed to be done, PROPERLY!

  • Very good video. I am changing both of my front calipers so I needed to be sure how to do the bleeding properly. This video is very informative.

  • do you usually have to take of the wheels to bleed the brakes?

  • @kalel0192 No, you do not need to remove the wheels. It just makes it easier to move around in the wheel well if there are no wheels.

  • Nice video very helpful Thanks! also a good little guide thats printable here

  • depressing vintage handy-man-do-it-yourself video from the 80's is depressing

  • @mitchp85 your redundant message is very redundant.

  • @Survivor87 6 thumbs up down here sonny jim

  • This car is a 75-81 Firebird. The rear stabilizer bar drop link bushing is a one bolt design used only on those models. Also, the lower a/c vent trim under the steering column give it away, used on 70-81 model 2nd Gen Firebirds. You didn't ask, but now you know. :)

  • @TransAmLuvr hahaha thanks man,, i already know brakes and was just wondering what GM car is that all thru the vid,,, like u said now i know.

  • @blindasbat509 It looks like it's possibly a Laguna. I may be mistaken though.

  • Thanks for the info. I needed a reminder of the bleeding the sequence, it will help!

  • L()l why not use the e brake.

  • when i push the brake my front wheel tilts is it normal?? or what could be the problem

  • @cottenfire

mabe u have 1 gd working brake.

  • great thank you heaps.

  • very informative and useful as i need to replace the brakes all around on my car. only problem is that im having trouble finding the parts i need =(

  • that looks like a late 70's monte carlo. funny cause im bleeding its brakes tom.

  • @wtfiswronghm Its a Second Gen. Trans Am for sure. (Think of what a second gen trans am hood looks like)

  • yes u do

  • Question ? if i change brake bad so i have to do the brake bleeding or not ?thanks

  • @zulnoon78 yes

  • great video.

  • if only i saw this before my gr12 exam..

  • what bout the engine, should run or off.....during this procedure.

  • Engine doesn't need to be on to flush brake fluid....in fact I think it HAS to be off

  • appreciated

  • it should be off.

  • thank you for these confidence-building videos!

  • i got an assesment doing this today rage¬ ¬

  • brake pedal to floor=bad=bleed,

brake pedat sluggish=possibility of air= consider bleeding

brake pedal firm= good dont bleed. poor brake pressure on a 1.3 year old car shouldnt occur unless there is air getting into the brake piston arond the inner seal. Check gaiters on caliper to see if torn, check master cylinder hose, check brake fluid and ensure no lower than minium mark if so.. its absorbing air into brake lines. brake bleed time per wheel=3 to 5 minutes

  • Why is it called a "Master Cylinder"?

  • cause it makes the other cylinder it's bitch.

  • The Master Cylinder, is one cylinder thats connected to the brake pedal. Its the biggest, it contains the reservoir, and it has the cylinder that moves the fluid to CREATE the pressure. The Slave Cylinders, theres usually 4 on a car, and much much smaller. They TAKE the pressure, and push out on the brake pads.

  • Ok, I need some help. Im about to turn 16 and will be getting my license soon. The car I will drive is my moms 2009 toyota camery hybrid. She does not want to accept that her brakes need bleeding - I can push it down with 1 toe. The car is 1.3 years old, and she think that the 15k mile checkup and the people who do the oil changes do it, and that they do every tiny bit of matinence to the car. She think that her engine light isnt on, so its fin. Can somone give me reasons to get her to do it?

  • punch her in the face.

  • Debating.... Debating..... Alfirmative!

  • I think she's right. The car is a year old for christ's sake, just leave the brakes alone.

And yes, the people who do the oil changes should do it. Unless there's a lot of travel before the brakes apply strongly, or if it feels very spongy, leave it alone.

  • The pedal goes to the floor with no effort, and if its put to the floor at speed, the ABS doesn't kick in unless its raining after a dry spell. I just dont trust the shops, especially after the car got detailed, there were spiderweb scratches everywhere

  • Oh, if it goes to the floor that's not good. I thought you meant it activated normally with only a little effort.

In that case, bleeding it is worth a try - took me and my girlfriend a bit over an hour, because we made some stupid mistakes at the start. If you do it right (keep going at each valve until you've used up ~250ml of fresh brake fluid from the bottle and use a one-way valve kit which feeds into a closed container, not a stupid big glass jar that falls over mid-bleed :P).

  • I'll have a go a that, thanks!

  • That sounds normal to me man. Dont fuck with your moms 2009 car. Alot of new cars have shitty brake feel, but they stop just fine. Its a new car, it shouldnt lock the tires because the abs is working properly! Just because tires dont lock dosent mean it sucks.

Now my 88 K5 blazer on 35s...none of the tires lockup, they used to, but i have a shitty pedal and horrible braking. My master cylinder is bad, gonna replace and then bleed brakes.

Leave your moms car alone, buy a 1k car and learn.

  • Should be a warranty repair from the dealer on any 2009 car.

  • i doubt that the brakes need to be bled on a car that new. Also, if tonka-toy does the maintenance the way they do, they wouldve bled the brakes and charged you already to do so. It may just be the way the car is designed. Unfortunately with hybrids you're doomed to become depend on a dealer to work on them. there's very few things you can mess with

  • Helped me save more money during these bad times.

I panted my calipers so i had to disconect the the hoses :)

Once again... cheers for the help :)

  • dtmbcorp- you are a dick

  • Big Thanks for the info!

Your a blessing to man kind.

  • Fuck off, dick. Everyone has to learn the first time. Don't act like you popped out of your mom's vagina knowing it all you wack motherfucker.

  • Actually you might be able to help me (please?). If the "square cut" oil seal is tapered, which way does it go into the cylinder? Thin side out or thick side out?

  • Actually I learned a lot.

  • When do you decide to bleed the brakes?????

  • Any time you disconnect the brake fluid lines anywhere in the system. The most common time the average doityourselfer would need to, that I can think of (and I'm new at this) would be when disconnecting your brake caliper from the hose. Reasons for this might be a caliper rebuild or full replacement job.

  • lol "make sure to dispose of used brake fluid properly" as the guy is trowing it in the garbage.

  • Its not a garbage. its a used oil drum

  • how do you flip the seals , wich is something bad, wasnt it done by pushing all the way down, cant remember, the seals are some rubber things , one way valves , dunno , I shouldnt write what I dont know

  • If ur brakes ever fail while u doing 90 mph jus stick ur foot out the door

  • LOLOLOLOL

  • you'll put blood on the ground until you stop!! LOL!

  • that would make a nice little red skid mark that u could show off to ur friends too

  • You can also just hold an umbrella out the window like a parachute.

  • yeah that works good too when its raining and ur shoe loses traction

  • snortrag684:

    good idea

thats what fred flinstone always did lol

  • @snotrag684

    roflmao

  • thanks for the video bro!

  • spray the bleeder screw with oil then "heat" with torch = FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!! U DEAD

  • Thank you for the good advice!
