nobody knows who wrote the original, it was first recorded by a guy in the thirties and he said his grandad used to play it to him. One of the guitarists in the animals said it was about a brothel in soho and the lyrics changed when english migrants took it to america, as it has an old english folk stlye. Just what I heard.

Actually its american folk song, the Animals only rearranged it a bit and performed it, they didnt write it, well at least not the original
