Sydney's New Years eve fireworks are prime and foremost a tourism event. They're the key event in Tourism Australia's promotional calendar. Another reason so much money is spent on them is that they are a great fun way to celebrate our nations success, provide a free fun for millions of Aussies and provide much needed annual morale boost.
Actually roboh11 it isn't a waste of time, Although we spend $4 million dollars on this we get at least 40 million in return through the 400,000 international tourists that come to watch this.
BBC World listed the top 10 things to do in the world in December; such as Christmas markets in Germany, swimming in lake Geneva (why I don't know) and other things like that and for New Years Eve Sydney was listed as THE place to be!
You call it a waste of money, I'm sure Sydney tourism would disagree! BBC World is broadcast world wide, FREE advertising for Sydney thanks to "braindead" fireworks!
Nah, I don't think so, its just something good and fun and everyone can enjoy. Your almost 40 and seem to hang around youtube an awful lot, perhaps you need to grow up??
I can't believe that Sydney does wicked things to promote environmental awareness (lights out day), but completely ignore this polution because they are the best at it.
How do you think those fireworks are produced? Environmentally, they're a diaster...a small scale disaster, but a disaster nevertheless.
I didn't realize that New Years Eve was such a "driving" event down in Australia. I know I'm ALWAYS driving in my car December 31st at 11:59. Give me a break.
I was there last year and caught the fireworks at Circular Quay! This year's fireworks were better than last year, it's not fair! I missed Sydney terribly!
haha, I was at circular quay last year.... Was awesome having the fireworks go off from buildings all around. Though there are probably another 200 000 people with the same idea... you are literally walking sideways brushing against every person to get somewhere...
WOW! We were just in Sydney 2 days ago and are back in Alaska - yours videos are the BEST! Music, great editing and to see a larger picture of all the fireworks - GOOD SHOW gang! Thanks.
@roboh11 Q: why are you trolling this video?
A: because you have no life and had no one to spend new years eve with :)

Q:Why do we waste so much money on making some pretty lights and big explosions?
A:Because we can.... And they ARE pretty lights and big explosions.
Q:And what is this doing to the environment?
A:Absolutely Nothing

Really, that's just garbage.
half of sydney would have been watching that display rather than driving in their car so really, what's the problem?
