well ... Had Henry allowed mary to Marry, he would have had prefectly several grandsons to inherit de throne, just as Hennry ll succeded through his mother. PS: why is Pillip portrayed so old?
As much as Mary seems to hate her sister, it was she who actually took care of Elizabeth as a child when Henry would not.
Poor Mary. I bet she felt that it was the fact that she was not born a male that cause the rift between Henry and her mother, and Henry and the Church. She felt obligated to "fix" the nation just because Henry didn't think a woman could rule on the throne. Men...
what's this crap? Phillip was a handsome and young guy...he was 27 years old and here is like 50! this series like all th eothers are always black and white the dark and evil spaniards agaist the pure, white and liberals english ..come on!
Phillip actually doesn't care about protestant/catholic one way or the other. He finds Mary repulsive and hardly ever slept with her, and he doesn't actually care if Elizabeth ascends to the throne. He was outta the picture (went traveling) at this point historically.
" How can I endure this purgeratory without stimulation?Without conversation? Without the rigour of debate?" I love that line, it shows Elizabetg's spirit well.
@MsAlicelouise Actually the amount are pretty much equal. Mary put to death (burned) around 250+ Protestant, and Elizabeth hung, drew and quartered 300+ Priests. I cannot really be a judge as to which is worse since it is all history, but I will say that they do as monarchs do...
@Renton6echo But Elizabeth ruled 44 years and Mary only 5, how many more would Mary have had burned had she reigned so long? Having read about Mary I find it highly doubtful that she would have abandoned her ardent devotion to her religion and changed her ways.
Let's all agree that King Henry was cruel to all his wives and daughters in different ways. Let's not favor Elizabeth or Mary, because they both suffered under hands. They both lost their mothers.
Poor Mary. Separated from her mother when the latter was breathing her last, forced to wait upon the harridan Anne Boleyn and to baby sit and comfort the ungrateful Elizabeth and Edward, forced into spinsterhood by her father, persecuted for her faith by her brother, nearly overthrown by the conniving supporters of Jane Grey, married to a cheating and negligent Philip, and dealing with a plotting sister. God rest Queen Mary, who executed far less people than any other Tudor.
Not true, especially during the time when Catherine Parr was married to Henry, and united all the children under one roof. Also, during the time of Anne Boleyn, Mary was compelled to reside at the same manor as Elizabeth, and of course, to wait upon her needs. She evidently did so with eagerness, as she loved children, and had nothing against the baby Elizabeth despite the cruelty of Anne.
I feel bad for both Elizabeth and Mary (after what Henry VIII did to both of them). Elizabeth was an excellent queen, however, I don't believe she was completely innocent when it came to the Wyatt Rebellion during Mary's reign. Elizabeth had a lot of ambition, which led her to become one of the greatest monarchs in British history. Both Elizabeth and Mary were very similar in many ways, they both just didn't realize it.
I hope and Pray to god that William finds a wife that cna give him a son or this could happen again if the daughter holds a grudge
I know how Elizabeth feels. I am the ONLY protestant in my family ever person from every generation before me has been catholic, all except my aunt and her husband and children, so if i do get kicked out then i can live with them
I think Anne-Marie Duff is beautiful. I also agree that out of all the actresses that have played The Queen, she may be the one that looks the most like her from all the paintings I have seen of her.. But I think she is gorgeous, and she plays this role wonderfully! YOU GO ANNE-MARIE DUFF!!
thanks honey! I really think that out of all the movies (old and new) that Ms Duff portrayed her perfectly, and looks soo much like her. But again, she is far from ugly! Thanks! ;)
I don't know... I personally believe that Elizabeth was probably pretty when she was young. For one, BOTH her grandmas were official renowned beauties. Her father, his sister Mary, and possibly Arthur were also very attractive. Also, Henry was attracted to intelligence but I highly doubt he'd favour Anne Boleyn if she were UNattractive (and since he was quite a shallow man, he probably had high standards). I think she was probably at least pretty in her youth... possibly until late 30s or 40s.
Anne-Marie Duff has a different kind of beauty. But she is the most accurate Elizabeth in looks and her performance is quite good. But Cate Blanchett was probably the best Elizabeth. Plus Elizabeth wasn't considered to be a classical beuty. She had eyeproblems and she needed a nose job. Anne-marie is perfect in this role.
to Hhostclub a pretty elizabeth i thought of for a seck and than i realized the real elizabeth was not that beautiful so i think they chose the right person for the job.
Why? If you're really interested in history you wouldn't care how pretty the actress is... Ann Marie Duff is probably quite close to the real Elizabeth... at least she's realistic. And she does a great job.
eww he has grey hair... She's too young for you Philip! (I mean, in this unhistorical portrayal of the two he is). Damn they sure made the historical six-year-difference look more like a 40 year one!)
I really like how they have Elizabeth speaking Spanish in this version as she really was a fluent speaker. In most TV or film versions of her life the writers just have her speaking English, although she spoke half a dozen languages fluently.
1:18...why is Mary wearing a breastplate as if she were going into battle? I know it is a constant battle of trust and wills with Elizabeth, but honestly, the subtle hint in wardrobe that says Elizabeth is the enemy really annoys me
I think it might be because they are trying to emphasize that, at this point, Mary was so crazy and paranoid that she thought she was in danger of attack from everyone.
totally agree no offense to anyone but if u look at history and even now in modern times so many terrible things happen becuase people are so torn about something like religion its sad people should just do and believe in what they want and stop trying to force their ideas on others
this is not accurate...first of all elizabeth conformed to the catholic faith to aviod execution. second, when she DID come out of captivity (after time in the tower plus subsequent house arrest) mary was not nearly as hostile or hateful upfront. good show though.
Well Mary is always portrayed as the crazy, paranoid, hateful middle-aged shrew versus beautiful, young and brilliant Elizabeth. It's rather annoying in a way because by all contemporary accounts Mary was kind to Elizabeth even up to her coronation-and after suspicion of Elizabeth's part in the rebellion had passed Mary continued to send Elizabeth gifts and treated her well though she naturally remained wary-who wouldn't in the same circumstances?
Umm first of all Elizabeth and Mary are really ugly in this movie ... :| and second i don't remember readying they talked face to face like this, but more through letters, and Mary kept a close eye on while Elizabeth was at home.
This is extremely unhistorical!!! Elizabeth and Philip were born 6 years earlier and he really was quite handsome with swarthy looks; he was never fat and he was never that much older than Bess! Elizabeth didn't actually like him, but she was probably attracted to his looks and crept into his favour by charming him. It was very public that the two were horsing around, but not anything in the bedroom. Because of Bess' smarts to charm the "Inquisition Prince," she was protected from Mary's wrath.
Ive read a lot on Mary and though she was intolerant of beliefs that was the only thing she disliked about Bess. She forgave her sister for the rebellions, cuz often it was clear Bess had committed treason by just talking to the wrong people. Bess could even have been tried for talking to another "traitor" in the Tower, Sir Robert Dudley. Mary spared her sister, though she was frustrated by Bess' religious tolerance. England hated her for marrying a Spaniard and for her brutality of Protestants.
there was no real proof against elizabeth and as for mary there was more then one reason she hated elizabeth... elizabeths mother was henreys wife after catherine, mary was forsed to be elizabeths mere sevent when she was a baby and then there was there different beleifs.. also elizabeth was young, beautiful, intelligent, loved and wanted... things mary didnt have
No she shouldn't. I don't believe there's any evidence that Mary was ugly. Adaptations about Elizabeth just like to portray her that way just to make us sympathise morewith Elizabeth.
Though Mary was trying to be kind in a wierd way by burning them, she believed that this purfied their souls and allowed them to go to heaven;they'd burn in this world to be saved from burning in purgatory
Nice! I was thinking that too. All that stress and worry put a HUGE strain on Mary's looks. She was actually very lovely to look at as a young girl, then years of hardship touched her and drained her. She looked so much older than her actual age. If you didn't know her age, you might think she was in her mid to late 60s. Word to the wise: Stress is not a healthy beauty product.
