R.I.P. to all of the people who fell victim to this horrible tragety. To those who survived and lived through it, I'm never going to fly in a Boeing 747, because of it's ragged safety record. It has been the plane of many a plain disaster. I would look at the Seconds from Disaster wikipedia page and count how many air disasters were caused by 747's.

For example, suppose I say that (I'm inventing numbers here) twenty people are killed by lightning in the USA every year...

Using your 747 logic (which may still be true, I'm not insulting you here), the conclusion is that America is a more dangerous place to be in a thunderstorm during a lightning storm. However, when you compare the population of America to the population of Germany, (307M vs 81M) then the danger of being in America is less pronounced. There are so many more 747s than other planes that more crashes are "expected".
