  • I NEED AN ANALYSIS ON THIS FOR MY FRIEND WHO STUDY MUSIC, THANKS

  • perfect crystal clear... master ... but too fast... when you slow tempo the song shows itself as a delicate piece.

  • What a remarkable performance.

So fast, but so precise and every note having a purpose.

    Wonderful interpretation.

  • mark the striking resemblance between this and handels allegro from the suite in g.

  • You can listen to this slow whenever your want. But Glenn Gould is the only one who can give you the chance to hear it in 45 seconds.

  • for me is too much speed. It´s perfect the performance but the beautiful cannon is lost in the speed.

  • Bach + Gould = perfect combination

  • wow....I used to play this invention back when I was younger.... but this is the first time I hear the music in it :)

  • @hfj00 Yes!, I find myself doing that as well. Not this work but others. I was always a fan of Karl Haas. He could point out what could be heard in the music also. In my opinion Glenn would have enjoyed this computer age. Hidden from the public.

  • In my piano lesson they say no more "O My God!!'' when something unbelievable happens but

    ''O My Gould!!''

  • i've never doubted that glenn gould is amazing. i still don't, but i realized that was makes him trully so amazing is that he can take such a simple little piece, and turn it into something so beautiful and complex....

  • I really can't believe how many negative comments there are about his interpretation here. Glenn Gould did not enjoy the way that so many pianists played the same drudgery the same way over and over just like those before them. He took the piece and did something different with it, and I think it sounds great. And honestly... the inventions were just a way for developing pianists to practice certain aspects of their play, and it looks like, to me anyways, Gould plays them /Very/ well.

  • Beautiful.

  • He just had to pee, badly.

  • major skills but honestly who likes it played this fast?

  • Im still trying to play sync with this version ...so hard so nice !!! Good goal i guess ...

  • You still life...

  • i nikt już lepiej nie zagra....

  • Nice and slow.

  • There's no "Too Fast" or "Too Slow". There's just the way you like.

  • 0:27 is the best part! He slows down slightly and lets the left hand begin the final entry so expressively

  • I think there can be no criticism of Glenn Gould's recordings or output.

    This is un-argumentable.

If you have a problem with that, take it up with Frank Zappa. He is dead too.

    This man is simply BRILLIANT!!!

  • @quinnguitar What a nice comment !!! heheh long live Zappa ???!!!!!!!

  • Super master !!!

  • Tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo fast!!!

  • Even at that speed it sounds so clear....amazing.

  • i had a dream it was bach's birthday and i had to babysit all of his kids :( :(

  • Gould - the king of never using the traditionally accepted tempos.

  • That was probably fun, but dude you are not the only one who is supposed to enjoy the music! ;)

I like Glen Gould, but wasn't that too fast?

  • i am not jelous,i am just admiring to him!!!!!!!

  • No I am not anywhere near his level. Jealous damn right.

    But in a respectful manner.

I mean I am sick of people tearing him a new ass. He is DEAD, he can't fight to those fucking comments like TBH,

    The Big Hemorrhoid .

My parents gave a 6 foot upright Beker Bros piano to there not thinking of what is worth. 20 t0 30 grand.

listen to TBH . I don''t know why I respond to these fucking emals but I am sick of hearing people

    damn that huts.

  • sounds like crap TBH.

  • @allenma01 - yes, he's terrible..and that's how this video has 160k views.

  • @goodcommentguy

You have a good sense of humor. Why I waist my time fighting with them is amazing. Just jealous amateurs -- or maybe worse than that. just one of them send me a midi or mp3 which actually can identify their superiority Mr Gould.

  • @turncapp - haha, I'll have to agree with that. Not sure if they're jealous ameteurs, but unless they are at Gould's level, they should just simply listen and learn from the master. Besides, when you're as good as Gould, you probably can play it at any speed you want and get away with it..

  • I think Bach doesn´ t have to be emotional always. It´ s not the right music style for emotions. Anyway, Gould plays this Two/part Invention much too fast. I don´ t like his style of playing this.

  • Whaaaaa? Holy crap, 45 seconds??? I'm gonna try this for my senior recital.

  • Correct tempi are not absolute. Gould made it work at this speed because every note was crystal clear, the voices were perfectly balanced, and every phrase sang. He was a wonder.

  • @IlGattonero13 It's true about his ability. But I think, and you might disagree with me, that's fine: the composition itself tells you the kind of speed it requires in relation to the amount of sound relationships or events the mind has to process. Yes, true that this is only a *2 part* invention, but you can still perceive the huge flow of activity like a power hose. That doesn't tell me of facileness and speed, however abilities at hand. Momentum: if you pass it, yo trade value for waste.

  • @IlGattonero13 Of course, the way of processing accepted depends on the character or intention of the piece. So, I'm talking about the composition, not the performer. It's good he had done this, so we can reflect, discuss and refresh our ears. Blessings. = ]

  • ehey..heyhey........slow down please Glenn Gould.....you are very so good....but it would be so so soooo good if you slow down...thak buddy

  • @migbern68 i believe you just asked glenn gould to slow down?

  • too slow

  • Bach MUST be Slow

  • I don't play it this fast ! [chuckles].

  • Too fast.

  • It takes me 2 mins to play this!!

  • I think it's the best interpretation of no.13, thanks for sharing!!! ^^

  • I guess he didn't want to miss his football game!

  • If I were the only one in the world that could play that fabulously fast, heck I probably would too.

  • too fast :(

  • Love Glenn Gould but and this is amazing, but I honestly agree with the comments that this is too fast. I think he intentionally sped it up for the film "45 Seconds and a Chair", whatever that is (Google couldn't find it, so I give up)

  • you know, I think it could be like a rain fall, or someone taking a shower!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    teeheehee!!!

  • too many notes.

  • jesus tits

  • Too fast to use it as a model..... (for me)

  • music is how you interpret it, this is how he saw it. I like his rendition as well as the slower versions.

  • ^ ^ It sounds like the piano is boiling pasta!

  • I've responded a video, but it hasn´t been published yet, does anybody know why?

  • @carlosmh83 The video user has to verify if he/she want too add the video as response.

  • this version gae me a heart attack, i play twice as slow as this

  • @Ayumura96 You play half this speed, if you play twice as slow you wouldn't be playing at all, you will be at a standstill.

  • Check out this Mother fucker!

  • Im just starting to play this piece for my Grade 6 piano exam. Any tips on how to practice and speed it up?? It's actually not that hard!!!

  • @MusicClassical1 I've also learned it in the last few weeks.

The most important thing is that you start in an extremly slow tempo, work extremly exactly and play only one or two lines a day. Try to play them in a perfect way, then go to the next and at the end you put them together like a puzzle. Then when you are able to play it fluently start to increase the tempo (in my opinion Mr. Gould plays it too fast!) and at the end you have a wonderful invention!

Good luck and all the best!

  • LOL! why does Gould play this one so fast? he's usually so tasteful! sounds good anyway, I guess he likes this one at lightning speed, thats the beauty of interpreting a classical piece, everyone gets to play it their own way.

  • Comment removed

  • yep too fast. it's not THE tempo to play it. now where do i go for the right version that at least beats my own *grumble*

  • Comment removed

  • Why is it so short?

  • Glen Gould's Genius, of interpretations of Bach music, tactical, Technical, Artistic, Polyphonic threaded with personal unique voice that transformed in his life as he transformed himself on his interpersonal journey. This man was and is one of the Greatest 20th century pianists, controversial to some, but to me one of the most influential & rare Geniuses of the 20th Century. I adore his music today as much as I did 15 years ago when I discovered it for the very first time.

  • he played more like how he felt the piece rather than how it would seem correct... love him

  • oh myy goddddd this is a machine!

  • F**ing crazy man. I've been trying to learn this piece for weeks I can't even play both hands together without making mistakes much less at that speed.

  • FASTER!! FASTER!!! 8D

  • This is indeed an "interpretation." In a way it belongs with that synthesized one on "Switched-On Bach II" -- not by any means pretending to be the only way to do it, but just someone's new take on it. Luckily, we have room for all sorts of takes. The real problem is to try to make a definitive performance. Presuming that J S Bach wouldn't play it the same way every time, or that people in his circle wouldn't, then it is silly to think there is one. My piano teacher had me play this in G minor!

  • Geeeeezus! So fast!

  • unnecessarily fast! that's not the tempo bach ask for this invention

  • @Jamez5cz Bach didn't ask for any tempo...

  • @MartinCruzat im sorry, in the original version it does go look for a thrustable version

  • Even if I also think this is to fast he should have cred for playing this piece at this speed and mainting the musicality, it's not so easy.

  • How does Glenn Gould make a living?

It sounds like everybody hates him...

  • @danishpride1 He is dead for 28 years..And I don't know how you thought that everybody hates him..

  • @danishpride1 Everybody doesn't hate him, it's just that everybody has their own personal interpretation of Bach's music. Like Glenn Gould might play this piece fast, but if you look at some other people, they might play it slower. He was also dead for 28 years... :)

  • @janzhii WHAT?! how can you hate glenn gould?

  • i hate glenn gould...

  • @janzhii Ditto.

  • @janzhii

Well he is dead. So what s there to hate. Are you a great pianist?

Good friend for Jesus sake forbeare,

To dig the dust enclosed here.

Blessed be the man that spares these stones,

And cursed be he that moves my bones

  • I am a huge fan of Glenn Gould, but I just didn't like this performance. It sounded rushed for no reason, and messy, even.

  • Perfect...

  • double parked turns it into an exercise

  • @lanthe22 however if you were to add notes you would be deducted points in a competition.

  • dang. that's all i have to say.

not that i like it this fast, but i had to try it. epic fail.

  • I believe this instrument should be played like Glenn Gould or be played by a different instrument when played after the original notes by Bach. I even think you could add more notes in the Glenn Gould version to make the piece fuller and fatter at some parts.

  • @Ianthe22

You SOOOO don't make any sense.

  • @maestrojimbo you are right the first word "instrument" should be changed with the word "piece". Maybe i should review my posts. TY.

  • Too fast for gods sake . . and I heard some mistakes @ 0.21 . . still better than me though!

  • @1xstew I don't know how that sounded as a mistake..

  • @CSPlayerDamon there is a run of notes @ 0 .21 that are scrambled and not in time, almost as if he plays a chord and not individual notes?

  • @1xstew Maybe your ear is better trained than mine..Cause although I can hear all the voices, I can't hear a mistake.

  • @1xstew I can't hear it either.

  • i think bach and gould would've been best friends if they lived at the same time and place.

  • The best interpretation ever... He gives the piece not a rush but a tempo.

  • the real version of bach

  • it`s too fast........but well played

  • how can people not like classical music. i play guitar and classical guitar. all my friends don't like it. its like they don't get it. this just blows me away.

  • i really love this version, it gives it a whole different style and feel at this tempo... feels like it's cut time because beats 1 and 3 feel more accented of, instead of all four beats more evenly given distribution of power

  • Best interpretation ever.............

  • He had to pee

  • @Lity10 Hah! The best comment here so far. =)

  • @Drive2Fast4U I agree =]

  • @Lity10 looooooool this is so funny. but i think he has his own style. if you like speed, you listen to him, if you don't, then don't listen to him :)

  • @Lity10 SOOOO Funny!! Thnx! (especially with the amount of time it takes to fine tune this piece, you need a good laugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

  • @Lity10 he never get to pee becuz hes dead

  • @Lity10

    What does that mean?

    Comprende?

    k

  • @Lity10 Ingenious comment!!!! :P

  • crystal clear... woaw!!!

  • AMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZING

  • too fast...

  • I like how in the last measure he slows down drastically: almost as if he's run out of gas and is pushing the car the last few yards XD

  • how can he possibly play this fast and yet so crystal clear??? wow

  • @MetalFreak973 don't agree its crystal clear pal . .

  • Gould was a great interpreter of Bach and I bet Bach would totally respect him if they lived at the same time.

  • I play this, not that fast... gould is great.

  • this is actually the bach invention that i listen to and get real music out of :)

  • ¡Ooh, pero qué técnica sorprendente! Ahora, si me disculpan, me gustaría escuchar un poco de música...

  • Good Lord that was quick... I play this in a dueling guitar version with my teacher and it takes at least 1:30, but this was in 0:45! Great respect for Glenn.

  • Gould sounds great playing Bach at any tempo!

  • "Gould" is surely the fastest way to play Bach. he seems to say "look how fast i am, nobody, ca do this like me" But Bach is spirituality, and played this way there's no time to feel anything of beaty and exctasy. Pure tecnique. Barvo Gould, but Bach is much better than you.... You don't respect him. And more important you don't traslate absolutly want he want us to feel.

  • @maurus1965 Non e vero. Gould era Bach!.

  • @maurus1965

    agree

  • @maurus1965

You fail miserably for saying Gould does not respect Bach, your interpretation of Bach's music is not the correct, nor is anyone else's correct, people play Bach how they feel it, and to say one is objectively better than another is erroneous, it's which ever one YOU prefer. Just because you don't feel the beauty in this interpretation doesn't mean others do not.

  • way too fast

  • Génial!!

  • Only glenn gould can do this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • everyone who thinks its too fast, shut the hell up, he played this flawlessly, it sounds amazing, when i try to play this fast , i miss certain keys, When i play at a more appropriate tempo i can play almost perfectly, i can even play this with my eyes closed , but am more likely to make a mistake, i challenge anyone out there to try and play this whole piece without looking at your hands, just like i do

  • this tempo is just silly

  • i think it is too fast.

  • of course it is perfect, of course you can ear every single note, of course the balance is perfect, of course G.Gould have the most incredible "maitrise" of his finguers, never the less it is to fast, and to "mechanic" and in music the silence is important, and happily this invention is short, because when you listen to this interpretation there is no breething....(respiration, en français)....It is perhaps just de la "provocation" exacly like some of his tempi in the Goldberg variations...

  • @TATISTCHEFF2 Ok, but if I were living and breathing Bach the way Gould did, playing everything he wrote for the keyboard a thousand times, exploring and trying out, I bet there would come a moment that I would like to play a piece like this as fast as I could without making a mess of it!

  • man, I begin to this this is sped up, otherwise, Bach would shit his pant now.

  • Glenn Gould=awesome.

  • Glenn Gould is awesome.

  • This..is really bad playing

  • You mean "really good playing"

  • @javacisnotrecognized No this playing is a joke.

  • @Webarton More like a 'trick' or 'puzzle' than a joke, but you're getting the right idea.

  • @javacisnotrecognized for me it's like a joke in that whenever I hear it I can't help but get a big grin. If that's what Webarton is referring to, then I'll have to agree with him on this one.

  • Very very very very very very good, but I still prefer Annie Zhou!!!

  • Gotta learn to play it this fast! Imagine just sitting and just blowing people's mind out in 45 seconds!

  • i love how fast and clean he plays this. even though the speed he's playing kind of takes away from the music, it's still fun to listen to it super fast like that.

  • I have to play this for my exam tomorrow, I can play it that fast ( not the whole piece cause then my fingers will be tiered ) but it's a very difficult piece.

I will have to practice a lot to play it so beautiful :)

  • Wow, wow, wow, This man was a Genius. I have been working over and over again on this piece for years and I feel like a peanut. What a tempo, brilliance, tone control, balance between the two melody parts. What an imaginative way to capture and accentuate the specific notes of the melodies at this tempo. Absolutely ingenious, I need many more lifetimes to reach this kind of level. A true inspiration.

  • Pretty damn near my favorite interpretation of this piece!

  • glenn gould used the piano to show his keyboard skills, i think he like bach more than anything. its weird, if he liked bach so much why doesnt he have alot of videos of him playing bach music on harpsichord, i think i love baroque and early music more than glenn gould liked talking and playing grand pianos

  • @witchcraftlord and thats a fact on my part

  • WICKED!!!!!!!!!

  • He plays this very fast. But he pulls it off! I prefer it just a little bit slower though.

  • he way too fast (that's not a good thing)...

  • i think he plays too fast

  • @ya1907 I think you listen to slow. Naw, just kiddin´ for the sake of argument! But you still have to admit, it´s impressive!

  • @ya1907 I think you hear too slow.

  • @ya1907 because this invention is easy to play fast and more difficult to play slow when memorized

  • @modo501 it was not that easy as you think to be this fast. Try it!

  • @ya1907 I think that is the point. You need to read before you post. '45 seconds and a chair' kind of implies fast, don't you think?

  • so perfect, how to play with both speed and musicality

  • Show off speed ? How could you say that ? This is perfectly played, even at this speed. You are so wrong.

  • Terrific! Glenn's "the one".

  • This is just show off speed.
