  • would it not have been cheaper to just burn it down and then haul off the remains...it seems like a lush area so its not like the fire would have spread like they do down here in san diego

    The house was over 100 yrs old... very dry wood. As well, it's less than 100 feet to another new building, as well as the 1886 Orangedale Railway Museum.

    A controlled burn would also mean having the local volunteer fire department standing by... inconveniencing too many people.

  • @hudsonjamesc For a long time around here, (Columbus, Ohio) people who wanted to tear a house down and build a bigger house would donate it to the fire department and they would burn it down, practice putting out fires and then the owner could write the house off on his taxes. Then, ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit bought a house in Upper, Arlington Ohio and had it burnt down. His $330,000 tax deduction was denied and a big court case took place over him owing back taxes to the IRS.
