"Francie, shut off that infernal racket!" LOL, man, people thought rock 'n roll was such a bad influence, if they only knew what was coming! And I love the pajamas and nightgowns women wore back then - I love going to thrift stores to find some second-hand ones!
If this was made today, when Gidget says, "Why don't I like dates?" the modern Political Crappyness answer would be, "Maybe you should try with other women."
People were more honest back then as a whole and you could trust your neighbor to keep an eye out and watch your back. There was a lot more innocence in peoples lives and the parents were used to it being even more so, therefore some were also naive. Like they say "Back then we didn't have to lock our doors", most people still left their keys in the ignition of their car, especially in rural areas.
I moved to West LA in 1968 right before this movie came out. Nobody surfed except at Malibu and it was a curiosity. Stop the car on a Sunday drive up Pacific Coast Highway and see all the surfboards lined up on "The Wall" at Malibu, but nobody in the water. By 1961 it was crowded. This movie started a huge fad. Now surfing is a multibillion dollar industry worldwide. Thanks Gidg!!!
Sorry, I moved to West LA in 1958 not 68 - a typo. I watched it all go down baby. Started body surfing Santa Monica 1960 while going to Brentwood school with the first skateboarders. I started surfing Malibu 1964 watching Dora and the guys that did the stunt work for Gidget. A magical era until 1969 when the floods buried Malibu first point for 2 years. Now I live in New Zealand. It's like California 1959. Deja Vu. No crowds. Cheers!
@pinkminiskirt16 Malibu was a vision of a Utopian. And it was FREE! Open to both boys and girls. You could hitchhike to the beach and all you needed was a pair of trunks. You could borrow boards on the beach and panhandle lunch money on the pier. It was a glimpse into the future. Kathy (Gidget) Kohner should get a monument made in her honour in Westwood Village.
How old was Sandra Dee when she filmed this movie? she sure looks much younger than 16 to me!

notice she only had to take a little from the 21.50 to buy all that food, now it would have taken more than that amount

i'm blown away that in this day and age (1959!) decent parents would let their 16 year old girl go play with older boys!
kevinmichaelwilliams 2 years ago 31
@kevinmichaelwilliams A 16 year old was considered more grown up then. A lot of girls were married by then.
