I could never do that with a box cutter, I do stencil/papercut work and I highly recommend spending 5-10 dollars on getting an x-acto knife (espesh If you dont have a box cutter) Its SO much easier

For cutting the wings out, you might want to use an "x-acto" hobby knife. The blade is tapered more, and the handle are a lot easier to control.
