@ghoststrider45 No, Ichiro is a jap yellow bastard. Not like those "superior" albino species having blonde hair, green eyes, pink skin, long nose with shady double eyelids, etc..
Together with their Tibetan relatives, they are the only monkeys which can endure this climate. Because of their high intelligence, they saw the benefits of the hot springs in the Devil's Valley after one of the macaques adopted this behaviour from humans in the 60s. So it's still new to them and the younger ones are still scared at first. The oldest apes are allowed (by the group) to bath the longest.
They also stay because they are fed by humans for tourist purposes.
I love these animals theyre so human! i just read an amazing article about them on environmentalgraffiti they season their food with salt and play with snowballs!!! Article also had some stunning photographs now that ive seen them I just have to go see them myself!
Very nice video, I wish I understood German. they remind me of my relatives when they go to Hot Springs Arkansas. Except my relatives have more hair, especially the women.
@SeriousNot The winter in Japan can be unusually cold and snowy. A climate not unlike neighbouring Siberia. Nevertheless, high in the mountains you’ll find certain animals who brave these weather conditions. They are Japanese Macaques. Together with their relatives in Tibet, they are the only monkeys who can endure this climate. They have acclimatised in order to survive the harsh winter. For this, they need to have close social connections and be extremely self-sufficient.
@SeriousNot part 2 - It’s important to keep moving in this kind of cold, however, this group has a specific goal: hot water springs gave rise to a popular tourist site in the valley where midwinter the water spouts up at a balmy temperature of 40ºC (104F). The Japanese Macaques are exceptionally intelligent, which is why they recognised the advantages of this natural wonder. Even the severest winter is bearable when you can take a hot bath.
@NovaScotiaChick The intelligence of the Japanese Macaque is evident when looking into their eyes. Some members of my family being exceptionally intelligent as well, have also recently recognized the advantages of taking a hot bath. Another case of Monkey see Monkey do :)
@SeriousNot part 3 - The pool is managed by a strict hierarchy: the higher up you are, the longer your bath can last. For the snow monkey, the hot bath is a relatively new enrichment during their winter ordeal. In the sixties, a curious monkey observed people here who for a long time had been using these springs to relax. Over time, the brave bathing monkeys attracted more and more of their hairy kind, until they eventually built their own pool.
@SeriousNot part 4 - Through instinct it is passed on to the youngsters how to behave in the pool, although during their first winter, the babies don’t seem to think that it feels like home and also that it is rather wet!
It’s all a case of “monkey see, monkey do.” There is one more reason for being in the pool: being a tourist attraction, they are being fed daily.
P.S. Not a literal translation - no criticism from Germans please :-)
@SeriousNot I can understand German and they are old SS NAZI monkeys training in the Axis Power of Japan. The main point the the video is trying to make is that no one told them the war was over! Most of the monkeys are very old but they have been training their offspring! It is a horrible example of hate being passed down from generation to generation. And by the way.... neverrmind, take care my friend.
Ganz wunderbar. Vielen Dank.
