6:07 *Billy intently looks over at Alphonso* "Should we bring it back, man?
*Alphonso nods his head, indicating the end of his fucking ridiculously epic solo* "Yes, Billy. I have completely fucked with this audience's mind quite enough for one day".
one of the sweetest parts of this song is the Alphonso solo and George peppering those keys behind him....such a sweet, dreamy sound! And oh yeah....BILLY RIPPED IT!!!!!!
The power of these funk masters together is one the almost indescrible! notice also some of the most underated. Billy Cobham and George Duke WOW! these guys tear the roof off the sucka. Brilliant!!
I see Billy combined the North toms with the Fibes kit he is playing here! NICE! There is only one Billy! And we are GRATEFUL! This man is just sic on the Kit! Major influence on my playing that is for sure! God Bless Billy!
Billy was at his peak in the 75/76 with this group,- i actually got the same special Fibes snare drume and added some animal drum skin in order to get a more short high Funk kick sound out of it together with a heavy Premiere drum set ( 6"- dowm to 26" big bas drum all singel skin to combine it with heavy sound.
Billy was deffently "the man" evry Funk drummer was looking up to worldwide.
I have this strange psychological condition; where whenever I see or hear Billy Cobham play the drums I have the uncontrollable urge to lock myself in a room with a drum kit and never leave... is this normal?!
Whatever happened to those toms that came out to the audience.i always thought they were a good idea at the time, along with roto toms.I guess to young drummers today they must look bizzare, but they had a hell of a sound.Maybe theyll come round again.I think they were made by a company called Capelle.Always astonishes me how Billy leads with his left, considering hes a right handed drummer.Great vid thanks.
I would wonder about anyone trying to give a technical analysis to this. I am quite an accomplished drummer, however starting at 6:22, I literally started sobbing like a baby and didn't stop for at least 15 minutes. In my humble opinion this offers far greater proof of God than all the worlds religions put together. enough said.
To the one person who didn't like this I have one question to ask u. Are you tone deaf? I think that is the only way you would not love this it's music at it's best. By all four players. Top marks.
Remember watching Billy Cobhams drum clinic in the 80s. Used his drums as an instrument rather than just a rythym backdrop. Great technique and must go down as one of the best drummers of all time.
You won't know what the fuck drumming is 'til you've seen Billy Cobham. You may think you know a good drummer, but that's because you haven't seen Cobham yet.
All hands for the audio guy in this time who recorded this! F*cking Brilliant! Even today this is a very hard thing to get. When the audio technician has a pony tail we normally walk out. Please do me a response if you have the same experience (exept when you're a pony tail ;-)
There is so much groove right here, man I wish i was alive to see them all play together. you just can't go wrong with the sweet sound of jazz/rock/funk all put together.
I finally looked up the set list for this special and cool concert... Intro/Crosswinds(does anyone have this...thought i saw it before) Panhandler Juicy Red Baron Almustafa the Beloved Ivory Tattoo Space Lady/Someday(this videos missing) Hip Pockets Sweet Wine(does anyone have that video?) Life & Times(anybody got that too?) Stratus(that too?) Thats What She Said
I have this whole gig. I have seen it many times, and I think it is probably one of the best live performances ever recorded. I think the same festival, on the same stage, Weather Report played too. What an incredible day that would have been.
Incidently, I don't think they played an acoustic number...
if you look closely at where john scofield is standing at 2:53, behind him are about 2 guitars, one looks acoustic. did they play an acoustic piece? And the other guitar? Does anyone know what that is?
I was lucky to see Alphonso (bassist) with Santana in '88....they literally "fed" off each other, and it was one of the BEST shows I've ever seen.....
I saw this band way back when and they were the OPENING act. Amazing evening. Of course next up was Shakti with L.Shankar Zakir Husain and John M. Then to close was Weather Report with Jaco before he was wasted. At the end. Billy took over the drums. Alphonso join Jaco on basses and McLaughlin join Wayne and Joe out front. I still pinch myself that that really happened.
@thatiamdisco Those were North drums, made from fiberglass. They were a good idea on paper but in reality, sounded HORRIBLE, just this dead plastic THUD. The idea was to have a drum that would project like mad.
Many people don't know that Jaco turned his fretted bass into a fretless as early as 1972. That was four years before his self-titled solo-album was released...And to my recollection Alphonso didn't play fretless at that time. And even if he did, the concert where this clip is taken from is at least six months after Alphonso met Jaco, so he had probably learned a lot from watching and hearing Jaco play. Still an awesome player though.
I dunno. As someone who appreciates good players whatever the genre, though I lean more towards progressive rock type stuff and the blues based families, I have to say that this seems a bit wanky and overly loose to me. I apprecate that they are all really good, but it lacks it coherence to my ears. I particularly find that McLaughlin type guitar style extremely wanky. Oh well, beat me up now... :-)
I don't think so. I'm certainly not one of those folks who has a problem with musicianship, being a musician myself. At a certain point though, it's not serving the song, IMO, it's serving the ego of the performer. And, ultimately, the song is the thing. You can play complex, layered music and still achieve intense levels of emotional impact and melodic beauty. I'd take something like McLaughlin's New York on my Mind over this any day, as much as I appreciate what's going on here.
But what exactly are you referring to in this video? Is it Scofield's playing? Besides him, everyone is consistently tight and grooving. I hear no ego's getting in the way of the music. It sounds more like you're trying to find something in this style that isn't there.
Billy Cobham was always a monster on the drums. There's a great divide in drumming between the different styles, i.e., rock, jazz, R&B, reggae, etc. But they all agree that Bill Cobham is great.
Man, check that left handed ride! Way before carter beauford and DMB. I remember learning that finger technique from a great teacher I had in Nashville when I was about 12. Pinch the stick between your thumb and first knuckle of your index finger, creating a fulcrum, and drive the stick into the drumhead with with your other fingers. Very comfortable and effecient way to create speed. You can snap the wrists for accents and power strokes.
yeah homboy. i had to learn finger technique because of carpel tunnel issues in my wrists and when i learned it i became sickeningly fast. and not to mention my endurance tripled(fingers and some wrist as opposed to wrist and elbows) that was the best thing i could have ever done for my playing.
Wow, I can totally hear Cobham's influence on Danny Carey of Tool. Especially that first tom fill in the begining not to mention the double bass drum playing.
Pay attention boys and girls, did you see Billy playing double bass? Listen at those explosive quads!!!!!!! Sounds like he's shooting the kit with two uzi's...Cobham the god.

I must say that i'm never impressed by Scofield. Just plain, guitarplaying..
Guess it's true what they say: "White people don't got soul" :)
And he's definitely the only one weakness of this group. But then again, maybe that staleness is what's expected from a guitarist in a fusion/funk gang..
Daamn I sound dumb! I love this Audio preview thing :)
First of all Scofield is not a "plain" guitarist. And even if you don't think he has "soul", that doesn't mean that all white people don't. That's an ignorant and generalizing attitude.
If you like this, check out Mahavishnu Orchestra. I like the uncle remus comment below :-) Duke was a very integral part of the Frank Zappa band in the 70's.
Thats right. Frank zappa didn't like the fact that George duke made his minimoog sound like a guitar. I realy like that patch and to me it doesnt sound like a guitar. It's just a mono expression synth.
Heh, I just thought how much they look alike when I was watching another George Duke video... Maybe it's just the way the Funk works in the Universe. It never dies, it just gets passed on...
On another note, Common looks an awful lot like Isaac Hayes.. I wonder if there's any link there.
LOL I never thought it that way. He look like he can be jurnee smollets father. LOL George is a cool down to earth cat. Had a chance to chat with him about his minimoog and other thangs.
Ya Know George Duke Is always the Master Of Moog Minimoog. This is my favorit patch that he created. Jan Hammer is another moog master. Those two makes the minimoog scream sqill and sing.
I don't know but I have the cd of that and he's just on that minimoog with the sample and hold arpegiator mod. George was the reason why I bought a used minimoog. LOL
Listen you nutter, come off the kicks lmao, thats a good one, mate,. what drugs you on, these cats can Jam until they fucking drop, just listen at all the tosh we get to hear in todays music, just be grateful damnit
No shit -- Billy's 2x kick is mesmerizing and begins to give off tantric vibes in collabo with Dukes keyboard whirl . . . Wow flashbacks of 70s jazz-cannabis-fusion adventures. I miss it So!!
BTW....that is the wrong title name for this song. It is from Billy Cobhams majic LP.
I believe it is called...."on a magic carpet ride!"

Check out Derek Trucks' playing and report back...
You're not syncin to scofield's vibe is all..

@petematic

FlowtnWitWalden 3 years ago 2
Thats right. Frank zappa didn't like the fact that George duke made his minimoog sound like a guitar. I realy like that patch and to me it doesnt sound like a guitar. It's just a mono expression synth.
dhampex 3 years ago
yeah the beginning groove totally reminded me of mahavishnu. might have been cobham and the moog

Anybody else notice how much George Duke looks like ?UESTLOVE's uncle?
Their playing is brilliant!
drumatic 3 years ago 3
Heh, I just thought how much they look alike when I was watching another George Duke video... Maybe it's just the way the Funk works in the Universe. It never dies, it just gets passed on...
On another note, Common looks an awful lot like Isaac Hayes.. I wonder if there's any link there.

He Also Kinda Looks Like Uncle Remus

LOL I never thought it that way. He look like he can be jurnee smollets father. LOL George is a cool down to earth cat. Had a chance to chat with him about his minimoog and other thangs.

I know bob moog is proud of them. RIP Bob Moog

Ya Know George Duke Is always the Master Of Moog Minimoog. This is my favorit patch that he created. Jan Hammer is another moog master. Those two makes the minimoog scream sqill and sing.
dhampex 3 years ago
He' so SICK wit it, man he takes it to another level!

Cobham also had his drums synched with a Moog (visible during his solo on this tune). Is there video of Frankenstein Goes to the Disco?
gentillyguy1 3 years ago
I don't know but I have the cd of that and he's just on that minimoog with the sample and hold arpegiator mod. George was the reason why I bought a used minimoog. LOL
