By the time it came out in 1991 the hardware was terribly outdated, an 1995 Commodore Amiga was more powerful because it actually had a powerful video chip, or any video chip at all for that matter.
Anyhow the day after i bought it i fought against the boredom of playing it and finished it overnight never to look at it again, until now.
Wat a terrible game this was, played it on the CDi when it came out back then, had to buy the mpeg2 module. Movies looked terrible on it, once you noticed the artifacts your eyes were drawn to them like it were titties.
CDi as a whole was a piece of crap. It was designed by Sony and Philips in 1985 but Sony jumped ship. As i remember the Sony version looked really playful, a bit 'my fist sony'-ish.
In addition to what BlackWolves said, the scenes are in the wrong order too so the game makes absolutely no sense. Obviously just a quick money spinner they really cocked up the cdi version.
I remember that picture with the hands coming out always scared me.Just creepy the First time you played (back when it was elite) following that little skeleton hand who's always beckoning you to follow him into some dark creepy corner, where your sure to meet that damn mysterious woman in white. What was so fascinating was the people were so real, like, you were there, in the story, trying to solve this mystery. Very Well Done. I was creeped the whole way through. Although the end was lame.
oh yes... this game scared me so many times on those long dark nights alone...truing to solve those Damn puzzles!!!! grrrrr... It was so cool because it was so unlike any other video game system. the animation and complexity of the game was so fascinating I couldn't stop.
It's a lot like Clue in the House on Haunted Hill.
I'm convinced that 7th Guest was probably one of the best, if not "the" best, horror game ever made. It had atmosphere, didn't rely on the mindless sex/gore that games of the genre go for today, AND it had a storyline that kept you interested until the end. ..using nothing more than simple puzzles.. save for "that one" puzzle, we all know which one I mean.
Anyways, loved the quality on the CD-I version. Only ever played it on PC.
Say, I heard this game can skip due to malfunctioning DVC; do you know much about that? I know that my cd-i won't watch Wayne's World's (hey, I couldn't find it on DvD) first Cd, which didn't have a scratch on it. PLEASE HELP ME!!! Thanks pal! :D
Guess I'm missing the effect of that "enhanced quality". I'm seeing absolutely no difference between this and the pc-version that I've played many dozens of times. All I've noticed is missing music between book-turns, and no narrator's voice after the front-door sequence.
@qandhistube It improves the Cd-i's graphical capabilities, improving it from 16 bit to 32 bit. It's not that much of an overhaul over the PC as much as other Cd-i titles; if anything, play this, then play Laser Lords; there is a major graphical advantage over this title.
I was playing this yesterday (my uncle let me borrow his copy) and I had a dream where stuaf was trying to kill me with a knife O.O man... I have weird dreams for being only 13.... I think I have the 7th guest plauge ( kind of like the plauge that the kids got from those toys..except I'm not dead)

ARG. i always wanted to play this game, but there were always issues preventing me like our cd rom was too slow, or not enough memory-15 years later I still think about it! Oh well, at least I had Monkey Island.
I am so very happy to have found this video and to read all of the comments below. I have been wanting to play this again for 18 years now. Thank you all so much for this information. I can not wait to get to try it using my xp.
I recently got my old discs running on my XP machine. I got some unexpected crashings and color problems here and there, but overall I can play it without difficulty.
Some quick tips: try downloading the patch after you install. For the sound device, try "SoundBlaster or Compatibles", port=220, IRQ=5. Also when you create the shortcut for the game (v32tng.exe), go to the properties to run it as "95", etc. Good luck!
What you do is copy all the files from disc 1 and disc 2 to a folder on your hard drive (game runs from hard drive! no more CD's needed to play!) Then rip the Audio from Disc 1 & 2 (can use iTunes or anything like that) and Save disc 1 as "track1.mp3, and disc 2 as "track2.mp3". Launch ScummVM, Add Game, Point to that folder and play!!
This works great on my MAC, PC, and Wii! (plays on my PSP too but a lil sluggish)
Thanks for listing those omissions. I didn't know the heart puzzle is gone (because I have never been able to get to it lol), too bad. The opening lines especially.
I dunno about the other content being cut out, any specifics? Sometimes the game just won't load things if you do puzzles out of order (at least on my system). The slider puzzle and basement maze look much better.
Overall, I like the additions to the game. I mainly wish it wouldn't crash at the basement on my CD-i.
This was one of the best games I ever played. Music was creepy, but also very good. Anyone know if it can be played on vista?? Or should I look out for an old 486 in a charity shop?
I saw CD-i commercials being run relentlessly on the weekends in the early 90's. I saw The 7th Guest run astonishingly smoothly on it. I see from this video thats truly upgraded video codec. On the PC, you're getting around 7 to 10 frames a second WITH page tear (flicker/screen tearing, NO V-SYNC) and this CD-I looks like its running at 15 to 30 frames a sec (cant tell because Youtube is only 15 frames a second video).
Very impressive. I bought this game in 1993. Definitely in my top 5 games.
Actually, I have the original version on CD-i, and it says: 'Suitable only for persons of 15 years and over. (Not to be supplied to any person below that age.)' This is the version of 1993. So, there you have it.
Like mrjustin5 said, they probably didn't have ratings back then. However, the version I have (that was bought around '99 or '00), the game is rated "T" for Teen.
gosh all these old games still give me the creeps... even more so than modern ones... this, mansion of hidden souls, d.... spooky... for some reason they all envoke a lot of fear in me... i guess because i was a little kid when i played them

I played this game when I was about 7 .. used to scare the crap out of me. "Blood dripping down the stairs .. " and the hands coming out of the picture at the top of the stairs... jebus...
I remember it being the first game ever with full FMV, it was so exciting back then to see just a few second of FMV on the old time PC's and the low res monitors.
This Is The Original Version Created For The Phillips CDi, The PC Version Had The Intro Tune You're Thinking Of, But I Think It Sounds Much Better With No Music As It Makes It Sound More Scary.
The melodramatic-ness at 04:52 is so over the top, it made the game more funny than scary. Still one of the best games in history. And yet all these games go unnoticed by the masses. That's the power of niche for you. Incredibly difficult-to-solve puzzles. How anyone can figure them out within the course of a year/decade is beyond me.
i used to watch this game that y parents played when i was a kid... can anyone tell me where i can download it pls??? i ve been desperatly look ing for it a very long time... :(
heheeeh when i first saw this thing i was like six, i thought Stauf actually took the doll out of the dream bubble, then carved it back into a wooden block xD
ya lol i played it when i was, like three, and by that i mean watched the fmvs while my mom played it. i was all "who's tad, i wasn't listening. HOLY COW ITS A GHOST!" it freaked me out so bad...
This isn't really that much of a "trick" to get working on a modern PC--a little trouble but not too much. I just finished 11th Hour played from 4 *fake* CD drives w/o ever having to change discs one time! I'm on Windows XP, but I'll admit I used DOSBox, and that's really the "trick" if there is one. The 7th Guest sets up the same way...
Wow, I never thought in a million years that people other than myself ever played this game. It's good to know I'm not alone. This game and it's sequel were rockin'
It's lacking an ego voice at the beginning there. However It looks so far exactly like the PC version except for the very beginning with the castle on the hill and the lightning.
The most devious 7th guest puzzle was getting the stupid game to actually run on a PC.
Excellent game though. Its hard to resist Seventh Guest's campy charm. Its a bit of a shame it hasn't recieved the same sort of attention Myst has in terms of remaking it like a billion times.
7th guest and 11th hour are fantastic games. They have fantastic graphics and for the computer age where way above average. You need take your time and use your brain, but these games will always be my favorites.
I'm curious as to people's thoughts on who the white lady is. Is that ever really explained? She appears quiet frequently through out the game, although in the third game that was never made they were going to add a fairy character that is kind of similar. Maybe they are connected somehow? One of Stauf's little demons?
The lady was a red herring by Stauf-- The object of his game, was to find the '7th Guest' and bring them to him. The lady was there to trick both the player and the other guests into thinking that she was the '7th Guest', diverting the attention away from the real 7th guest.
I liked it when I was younger but at the near end the computer crashed so that sucked a bit and never played the end :(, I don't know if you can still play it on the pc. You also have the 11th hour that is part 2 but I haven't played it
Well if you could find it yes! Of course then you'd have to find a way of playing it on a modern computer, it's a dos game which doesn't always run on some computers. But yes it's a fun game:).
one of the best games ever made seriosly eerie. incredibly difficult puzzles with a brilliant story. someone needs to make a sequel to this for next gen consoles!
yeah i visited the website the same day i posted up that comment. AWESOME! you guys are legends. i hope you get the go ahead to release it and everything. i'm a big fan of 7th guest and 11th hour...truely special games!
I can't believe I blew $50.00 on this back when I had an 80-486 with a tripple speed NEC SCSI CD-ROM drive...and don't forget your 16-bit ISA sound card and VESA local bus multi I/O card...and your 9600 baud modem. That computer cost me thousands of dollars. What was that, 1994/1995 or something?
Burn:Cycle was a good CD-i game. And lets not forget that both these games were amongst the first of their kind; where the player can roam within a 3-D environment. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing!
The PC version was garbage compared to the CDI version, but then the CDI is basically just smooth video clips strung together by user choices. Console games have always had the upper hand in that realm because PCs tend to fall victim to lag when playing videos and music and whatnot all at the same time.
Great video, thanks for posting it! :D I miss this game... I'd get a CDI just to play 7th Guest if I could afford it. xD
I've allways wanted a cd-i,and ive NEVER played this game, but i can tell allready i would love it,,crossing my fingers hoping ebay has one this week =)
I hope your joking. You are better off with a PC and just running an emulator for CD-i. After looking at Zeld and MArio that should push you away. An Atari Jaguar is even better than this piece of chit.
That is so much smoother then the PC version, odd that it would be that way considering computers always have the ability to get better when the CD-I is always static. Very cool though.
No way, the older PC-DOS version is better, because the CDI version was simplified, with some puzzles mades more easy and without the kitchen puzzle. The later PC for Windows version was like the CDI one.
By the time it came out in 1991 the hardware was terribly outdated, an 1995 Commodore Amiga was more powerful because it actually had a powerful video chip, or any video chip at all for that matter.

I remember it being the first game ever with full FMV, it was so exciting back then to see just a few second of FMV on the old time PC's and the low res monitors.

not to be picky becuase this is amazing but what happened to the music during the intro? again not complaining
xannidel 3 years ago
This Is The Original Version Created For The Phillips CDi, The PC Version Had The Intro Tune You're Thinking Of, But I Think It Sounds Much Better With No Music As It Makes It Sound More Scary.
DardCartoons 3 years ago
Be aware that most versions of the game are incompatible with most CD-i consoles, and will freeze once you enter the library.
I need to download this thing for the PC - never did beat it.
Never figured out that EVIL bishop puzzle either.
Pikachu132 4 years ago
The melodramatic-ness at 04:52 is so over the top, it made the game more funny than scary. Still one of the best games in history. And yet all these games go unnoticed by the masses. That's the power of niche for you. Incredibly difficult-to-solve puzzles. How anyone can figure them out within the course of a year/decade is beyond me.

ugh god, this game haunts me so T_T

You know, maybe I just played this game when I was way too young, but I still consider it to be the creepiest of all. Love it.

heheeeh when i first saw this thing i was like six, i thought Stauf actually took the doll out of the dream bubble, then carved it back into a wooden block xD
and THAT's why age limits mean nothing lmao
UndeadSpider 4 years ago
ya lol i played it when i was, like three, and by that i mean watched the fmvs while my mom played it. i was all "who's tad, i wasn't listening. HOLY COW ITS A GHOST!" it freaked me out so bad...
mrdressup101 4 years ago
heheeh... I wanna play this games music on ma piano lol, anyone got scores? :P

OMG this is so fast. Guess I never had a computer that could handle the game haha

Wow, I never thought in a million years that people other than myself ever played this game. It's good to know I'm not alone. This game and it's sequel were rockin'

bryanb80 4 years ago
Space Quest? No, that's Beatrix Wankmeister or something like that.
thejobloshow 4 years ago
If you typed zaphod beeblebrox in at the menu it unlocked all the doors(I think) so you could just explore the house and watch the videos.
bryanb80 4 years ago
It's lacking an ego voice at the beginning there. However It looks so far exactly like the PC version except for the very beginning with the castle on the hill and the lightning.

The most devious 7th guest puzzle was getting the stupid game to actually run on a PC.
Excellent game though. Its hard to resist Seventh Guest's campy charm. Its a bit of a shame it hasn't recieved the same sort of attention Myst has in terms of remaking it like a billion times.
thripsys61 4 years ago
lol yes quite a trick to get it to work on a modern pc sometimes.
A31Chris 4 years ago
I Loved this game. It was sch a unique game...along with its sequel the 11th hour. but that third one, Clandestiny was their downfall.
Krensada 4 years ago
7th guest and 11th hour are fantastic games. They have fantastic graphics and for the computer age where way above average. You need take your time and use your brain, but these games will always be my favorites.
linuxthedroid 4 years ago
I'm curious as to people's thoughts on who the white lady is. Is that ever really explained? She appears quiet frequently through out the game, although in the third game that was never made they were going to add a fairy character that is kind of similar. Maybe they are connected somehow? One of Stauf's little demons?
Watson2007 4 years ago
The lady was a red herring by Stauf-- The object of his game, was to find the '7th Guest' and bring them to him. The lady was there to trick both the player and the other guests into thinking that she was the '7th Guest', diverting the attention away from the real 7th guest.

This game looks very scary. A must-buy-game?
Wakka12321 4 years ago
I liked it when I was younger but at the near end the computer crashed so that sucked a bit and never played the end :(, I don't know if you can still play it on the pc. You also have the 11th hour that is part 2 but I haven't played it
agathadirks 4 years ago
Well if you could find it yes! Of course then you'd have to find a way of playing it on a modern computer, it's a dos game which doesn't always run on some computers. But yes it's a fun game:).
Watson2007 4 years ago
ehrm, almost all dos-games runs on DosBox :)
Wakka12321 4 years ago
this game brought back fun memorys... I still have this game but it dosent work.
robdun 4 years ago
There are patches available to let you run it on xp / vista ;) google it!
Either use the patch or download DOSBOX, A DOS emulator which runs this game. I have it working right now.
Just google it, theres plenty of info

The intro doesnt even have the music in it. It's the music that gives it that eerie feeling.

CDi at the time could playback the best digital video was built as a interactive video console and failed cos it missed its chance at a 3D market.

I still have the game in the box too.

Burn:Cycle was a good CD-i game. And lets not forget that both these games were amongst the first of their kind; where the player can roam within a 3-D environment. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing!
RipleyXander 4 years ago
The PC version was garbage compared to the CDI version, but then the CDI is basically just smooth video clips strung together by user choices. Console games have always had the upper hand in that realm because PCs tend to fall victim to lag when playing videos and music and whatnot all at the same time.
Great video, thanks for posting it! :D I miss this game... I'd get a CDI just to play 7th Guest if I could afford it. xD
tirsden 4 years ago
NO! You DON'T want a CD-i!! This was probably the ONLY good CD-i game!
EpicOdysseus 4 years ago
I've allways wanted a cd-i,and ive NEVER played this game, but i can tell allready i would love it,,crossing my fingers hoping ebay has one this week =)
legendofmetal777 4 years ago
Make sure you get one with the Digital Video cartridge included, since they can be hard to find separately now days.
JAMMAPARTS 4 years ago
cool,, will do,thanks
legendofmetal777 4 years ago
I hope your joking. You are better off with a PC and just running an emulator for CD-i. After looking at Zeld and MArio that should push you away. An Atari Jaguar is even better than this piece of chit.
genocyde83 4 years ago
PC version is way better; where's the Fat Man's soundtrack?
thejobloshow 4 years ago
That is so much smoother then the PC version, odd that it would be that way considering computers always have the ability to get better when the CD-I is always static. Very cool though.
trippe2k 4 years ago
No way, the older PC-DOS version is better, because the CDI version was simplified, with some puzzles mades more easy and without the kitchen puzzle. The later PC for Windows version was like the CDI one.
kanedamishima 4 years ago
What!?! I want a CDi, and a copy of this now! So much clearer that PC was, even with youtube's re-encoding!
elit3darkness 4 years ago
The intro music is gone, that sucks...that little theme really got you ready for the game.

i have the pc version and i could never get the intro music to play during the opening credits.

man the CD-I sucked ass but this was a pretty good game for it
gangman5 4 years ago
so... this version is better than pc's?
R4Zi3L 4 years ago
Yeah, I had the PC version too and this was by far the best version. This game is one of the reasons I kept the CD-I around.
