Sexuality is actually mentioned several times in the series, but mostly as underlying messages. Like that one bald-headed engineer? He is gay. It was clarified by the director of Last Exile on a blog and, if you listen to his dialogue through the series, he is trying to get with Claus. Dio is a touchy subject on sexuality. I wouldn't say he was gay, more-so confused. Look at his sister! If you look at some of her actions, its questionable if she feels more than a sisterly bond to him.

@aryllia none taken its just that Dio has this unique charisma about him that makes him stand out thats why I said he seems more feminine than masculine to me. If he was a woman acting masculine I probably would have said the same thing just vice versa. No feminine behavior is not low status at least to me it is not. Just like their are men that look and stand out as feminine. I don't look down on them.

Luciola's feelings were unrequited, even though they had strong feelings for one another. Dio only thought of him as a friend. I think Dio had a crush on Claus, but he never really developed "adult" feelings for another character...

When Dio was bored, he saw Claus do an Immelmann turn, a probably rarely done move, and considering that Claus and Lavie are probably the young vanship pilots, it makes it even more unusual. Claus is an awesome pilot and Dio just wants to interact, meaning to be able to make a conversation, with such a skilled pilot, only Claus doesn't trust him. No yaoi intended

I'm not saying that Dio was lusting after Claus. I'm just saying that Dio had an innocent un-gender biased view towards love as all children do. When he became an adult he was forced to meet the Guild's standard for "love". It's all symbolic, man.

Do you really think they told him that he supposed to like women at a young age? He had no parents to be an example all he had was his sister. No television. No awareness of the outside world. He only knew what the Guild taught him. So with those facts in mind, do you really think gender was an obstacle for him?

Personally, I say he does, but I've already said, he only acts the way he does around Claus because he is eager to communicate and be able to talk to such a skilled young pilot and nothing else. If you knew someone really cool, you'd probably try to get that person to talk to you too, right? It's a universal feeling to want to be acknowledged by someone so skilled, cool, etc.

If I thought someone was cool, I would act avidly flirtatious (all over them) towards them. It's more. If you think Dio has gender barriers then name one woman that's he acted flirtatious towards. It's natural for someone his age to have a crush, right? I just think that he has a confused outlook towards sexuality.

Actually, a piece of official artwork depicted "someone" in a Guild uniform arriving on the farm at the end of the series, with everyone happy see the person.

Also, an official book says that Dio was picked up by a passing guild ship after he fell out of his vanship.

@DeprationAD I think you're misinterpreting the scene. Dio never said "just." He said "listen Luciola, you and I..are friends." Which is a huge deal, since most of the higher class guilders are somewhat emotionless and can be cruel to their servants. Lucciola cried because he was so touched, because even though he was just Dio's "property" Dio considered him a friend.

I love this video. :D Lucciola was always my favorite Last Exile character, I'm a sucker for loyalty. It always struck me as sad that poor Lucciola's sacrifice was in vain. I mean, he told Claus to take care of Dio, and he totally didn't. He dumped him off at a medical station and unsurprisingly, Dio ran away and got killed in the grand stream. (Yes I know about the DVD insert, but to me that's not canon.)
