ACTUALLY, Shanghai is one of the weakest areas in China in term of elementary, middle and high school education. If the students came from other provinces such as Fujian, Hubei, Anhui etc, Chinese students could do even better in the international competitions.

However, they are all very small countries that have fully modernized, in contrast to China. Only Shanghai can truly compare with these countries, but again, the rest of china cannot. 40 Million people in northern china live in cave homes, rural migrants to cities cannot send their children to urban schools at all due to archaic registration rules, etc.
Unfortunately the teachers unions will never allow the radical changes needed to compete at the top. In the future Americans will be the ones looking for jobs in other countries.

In the late 1940s and 1950s the us debt was relatively bigger than it is today. but the issue was dealt with. anyway, the bbc is far more reliable than fox news or cnn or any of the other news outlets that are owned by corporations and obviously biased. the bbc is owned by a neutral trust.
only the chinese students in wealthy and well funded shanghai were tested. in contrast, students from all over the us were tested, including impoverished areas with a poor record of achievement. Overall, us scores are better than general chinese scores.

Also, education is highly valued among the Chinese (think Confucius and his teachings), which makes a stronger desire to learn and create more competition among the children.

Just think of it in perspective, would more than a few 100 people from Hong Kong go to take a test that far way? Or people from rural villages in China?
Basically, yes, you will have a few people from other parts taking the test, but overwhelmingly, they will be from Shanghai or its dependencies.
If we take scores from a Chinese nationwide testing, the results would show the exact opposite.

These migrant workers come from all parts of China and the students who participated in this Test fairly represent the average intelligence and academic performance of Chinese kids.
It is the Chinese culture that place so much emphasis on children education that give rise to such good results.

This is a very serious issue that is tremendously unjust and you are completely misreading and ignoring it. They may in fact attend schools, but they are universally private and lack adequate resources. Migrant children are not doing fine at all, and by saying that they are, you are doing a disservice to them by making their plight appear nonexistent.

However, they are all very small countries that have fully modernized, in contrast to China. Only Shanghai can truly compare with these countries, but again, the rest of china cannot. 40 Million people in northern china live in cave homes, rural migrants to cities cannot send their children to urban schools at all due to archaic registration rules, etc.

only the chinese students in wealthy and well funded shanghai were tested. in contrast, students from all over the us were tested, including impoverished areas with a poor record of achievement. Overall, us scores are better than general chinese scores.

@GothicHorrorFiction Chinese is a language that does not use alphabets... I don't think memorizing 5000 + words is that easy... Also, education is highly valued among the Chinese (think Confucius and his teachings), which makes a stronger desire to learn and create more competition among the children.

@Iceblade157 did you read my comment, because you didnt respond to it. on the whole, CHINA AS A COUNTRY IS STILL RANKED WORSE THAN THE US. only one city (shanghai) beats the us, and that doesnt mean anything because you cant compare one city to a whole country. that just isnt scientific and thus the result doesnt mean anything. as to your point on language, that doesnt apply to either science or math, and also doesnt really apply to native speakers and learners of chinese.

Also, onto language, Chinese is, without a doubt, a harder language to learn than English, and pretty much having kids excel more in a harder language thanenglish (a relatively easy language) really implies something -___-

At least the Soviet Unions, after 1955 started respecting peoples civil rights, and not just their standard rights, there was some freedom of speech. You could say much of anything you wanted, but it just couldn't be widely public. The Soviet Union was an innovation and scientific powerhouse one of two int eh world at the time. @slobhinav China is poorer due to the Japan's invasion and Mao's wrong policies and pulled China back 50 yrs, but after Deng Xiaoping reformed China, in only 30 yrs we surpassed France, Britain, Germany and Japan to become the 2nd economy. Of course that is still not enough but we know we're on the right track and we'll continue to change our country quicky, now China has the fastest supercomputer and train, our space tech is better than EU and Japan, our green tech is at the top of the world.

@slobhinav GDP per capita doesn't tell the whole story. Those numbers you state can be deceiving. How much is the debt per capital in the EU? Didn't several EU countries apply for a "bail out"? Oh, how about the debt our own country the US has? 14 trillion, and counting! And we're not even addressing the fact that it takes many more dollars to keep our standard of living than a similar one in China. Face it, China is raising to the top, and being in denial won't change that.

As far as US debt, it's at record levels so I don't know where you get it's been bigger before. Tell me, could you survive very long by living off your credit cards? Who really has "more" money? The individual who earns $50,000 per year, and spends $40,000 of it using mostly cash, or the one who makes $200,000, but spends $230,000 using mostly credit?

Yes, but you forget, almost all of the test taker in Shanghai were FROM Shanghai.
Just think of it in perspective, would more than a few 100 people from Hong Kong go to take a test that far way? Or people from rural villages in China?
Basically, yes, you will have a few people from other parts taking the test, but overwhelmingly, they will be from Shanghai or its dependencies.

If we take scores from a Chinese nationwide testing, the results would show the exact opposite.
And the thing is---you know. China is still a country which cannot feed millions of its people and provide basic education for them, this boom of its economy is providing very little attention to the force relocation of slums even in the cities and the "polishing" of them by government force.
