He was very talented but really aged and looked old for his age. I guess it was due to his lifestyle. Makes one wonder how artists(yes, totally different genre), like Ozzy Osbourne, who did so many drugs, still play and look pretty good now!
I'm a big music guy, and middle-aged too, so I've seen a number of musicians whose work I have loved die. Some of these deaths were highly publicized, like Jerry's; others much less so. But even though Jerry, had he lived, would not have been likely to produce too much music that was on a par with this best work from the 60's and 70's, he is the only one whose passing still leaves an empty space in me. I never met the man, but still he felt like family. Long live, Uncle Jerry.
@sugarmag13 TELL ME ABOUT IT. We have to face it though...God always takes the really good ones away from us too soon because he wants them for himself.God is an impatient, selfish little brat !
@sugarmag13 You too? Once in a great while (maybe once a year) I steal off to my room, say a prayer and shed tears. Them were happier days, and without a Grateful Dead, much in life seems superficial. I've gone so far as to have prayer requests made for him at church. God bless and show grace upon this wonderful human being.
I worked with Jerry and the Dead in 77 and 78. Our company had the hospitality contract backstage for all shows on tour. He was the real deal. The nicest guy you ever want to meet. The band wasn't putting on a show. They were just being themselves. That is the beauty of the Dead. Nothing was rehearsed, no song lists were made, it was decided at the moment. Jerry once said,"I want to play as if I was in the audience and I was paying. I want it to be genuine". This man cared. I miss him4evr

He was the regnant of the euphonious adroitness... the sultan of psychedelia... the monarch of the 1960s choral frivolity...
