  • This religious solo motet was composed at the time Mozart was visiting Milan. It was written for the castrato Venanzio Rauzzini, Mozart's favourite for his operas, who had been Cecilio in Lucio Silla the previous year. Although nominally for liturgical use, the motet has many features in common with Mozart's concert arias, such as those drawn from his operas.

  • Well, she's better than Damrau or Sutherland. Her vibrato is damaging, however, to the melodic integrity, and her tuning is short of perfect.

  • A real singer.

  • Wonderful ...thank you ! :)

  • Love it. She's having fun with the piece and she sounds wonderful.

Anyone notice that the video is not in sync with the sound?

Buggs the hell out of me.

  • Sing to me, Renee!!! Sing to me!!! There is nothing quite like that smooth, buttery legato hers. I get chills <3

  • Her cadenza is so beautiful. Whoever wrote it for really understands the beauty of her voice.

  • @asdfopera ,Mozart? I did not know he was able to see the future.

  • @marshallrkeith

nope. i think it was christoph eschenbach.

  • this is absolutely beautiful. Her interpretation, stylistic choices, and ornamentation are spot on. what a truly beautiful instrument she possesses.

  • I think people need to make up their minds. You complain when a singer sings something the same way as everyone else does; THE WAY IT WAS WRITTEN. Yet when they make stylistic changes and interpret it in their own way you bitch anyways. Make up your minds.

I myself love Renee, and I think that this was a wonderful performance. There are better ones, but for what it was this is a good performance.

  • The best version of this is Kiri Te Kanawa (concert in london in the early 90's)

  • Je n'aime pas ses ports de voix et ses glissando et ce n'est pas dans le style. Une bellevoix quand même,

  • I like Renee Fleming. But I don't know if Mozart like her interpretation or not because I do not know music much. I lie Renee's voice. Mozart would not mind others interpret his songs/music in a different way? ??

  • TTrylistening to secret2singer2

  • I think it is great that she added a cadenza... it is what singers during Mozart's day would have done. I am sure that Ms. Fleming has done thorough research on ALL of the performance practices of Mozart.

  • i am exulting and Jubilate listening to this!

  • lol

  • she treats this like wagner! i'll pass!

  • I always enjoy watching Ms,Fleming- she seems to get so much joy out of her singing. But, I highly doubt that Mozart had anything resembling this interpretation in mind when he wrote this piece. Of course, had he been forced to watch La Bartoli, he may have quit writing altogether! Please, I'm not looking to argue, but some singers need to go back to Music History 101 and connect with the composer.

  • You have a point but when artists execute their creativity, it is really very hard to say what should and shouldn't be done. I agree, however, that care should be taken that the interpretation respects the composer's wishes.

  • shes good!

  • jackkjack: shut up !

  • you must be a really intelligent person to have come up with something that clever. i've never heard anyone say something quite that smart in my entire life, do you write your own insults or have you hired a team of professionals to do it for you???

in the event that you're too stupid to realize i'm being sarcastic and think you're a complete retard, and you may as well just go jump from a bridge or play in heavy traffic. fucking idiot.

  • Why thank you contradictive sir..!

Calling me smart at first then retarded and again smart.. i guess you're the plucking id i ot here, not?

  • wow you're more stupid then i'd originally thought. just kill yourself and get it over with, you're a waste of space and obviously don't know how to read. just go die, you pathetic excuse for a human. you're a horrible little man and are taking up valuable air that intelligent people need.

  • pretentious much???

  • not only pretentious, but incredibly stupid as well

  • i love renee, she's one of my favorite sopranos by far.

  • does anyone really believe this is Mozart?

  • I don't know. It's too deep. Amadeus is more silly, but Wolfgang may be the composer :-)

  • my answer: No, I don't belive.

  • Beautiful!

  • I don't know why, but to me this seems to suit mezzo soprano voices better. My favorite version is by Anne-Sophie von Otter. I like Christine Schaefer singing it too. I would certainly not dismiss what Renee has done here, like some other posters. She does well singing a difficult piece.

  • She started wonderful (the record with Mozartarias) and some years later she changed her voice with her to much darkenings 8do she think that she will get a voice like Jessye Norman?) Cant understand her ambishions.... This is not anymore creamy this is an old aunt from Kentucky ....excuse...

  • She always rises her palate high to produce a sweet voice. I went to her performance in Taiwan on 2007. She had very good eye-contact with audience. I remembered that she looked at me when she sang some phrases. It was a wonderful evening to hear she sang Strauss's last four songs and popular song-'somewhere over the rainbow.'

  • This is great fun... and Ms Fleming clearly enjoys the ad lib at 2.00 in. For a touch of heaven though please go and listen to Arleen Auger, sublime and very focused on the music rather than giving a show... both ladies terrific in their own way of course but for an enduring satisfying musicianly version give Auger a moment of your time,

  • I prefer Diana Damrau.

Her voice is more versatile and is THE ONE for Mozart's vocal music.

  • After Cher

  • you better be kidding if you're saying cher is better then renee

  • I agree. Diana is magnificent with Mozart, her queen of the night is unmatched. Renee is more suited for lyric romantic stuff, she's lovely here though. Kiri te Kanawa (I'm prejudice...she's my favorite by far) is incredible with Mozart. It is actually one of her specialties (even not being prejudiced!)

  • I actually think Dessay is the best as the queen of the night. I agree that Te Kanawa is the best with Mozart overall, as she is also my favorite soprano. Fleming does a great job here, too.

  • Very good. But I still prefer Gruberova's and Battle's.

  • i've been looking for just this video!!! thank you so much for posting it! <3!

  • I wish the first part of the Exultate Jubilate were on here, and not just the second half.

  • I love it.

  • Not her best performance for sure...

  • I love Renee Fleming, but I definitely don't like her interpretation of this.

She does look delighted after her 'freestyle' though (2:16). :P

  • Excellent performace

  • Oh God this is awesome! I've been looking for something like this, from Fleming for a long time...Thanks!

  • Hey..You're all so critical one must asume you are superb musicians.I prefer Kathleen Battle singing this, but gee...it's pretty damn good to my untutored ears !

  • Fleming makes it like opera...well she can do it.

    Sh is Fleming.

  • where was this sung?

The cadenza with straight-tone is awful for this piece. Oddly enough, theres a vid of her singing the 3rd section of this on YouTube and it's quite decent.

  • tacky and cheap; where is the purity?
