  • One of my favorite songs and I think Dave Matthews always does it justice when he plays it

  • absolutely fucking beautiful!

  • Nicely done, the talent is obvious. But James King's bluegrass version brings tears to your eyes when he does this song, whereas as here, im more distracted by all the muscianship of voice and playing, so much so that I lose all the heart of it. The voice, however good it is, ruins the soul of the song here.

  • @griffcats I agree that this version is way overwrought. And as you point out, the over-the-top singing gets in the way of the song--in particular, the humor and surprise of being "in the arms of my best friends wife" and that fact that, most likely, this lost soul is only imagining she visits his grave. This is an ironic song--she didn't care enough to speak up and keep him from hanging--but the irony gets buried under DM's melodramatic delivery. Or at least that's how it seems to me.

  • @ReallyImWorking you are freakin" retarded....Coming from a musician this is the best cover if not better then the original1

  • @ReallyImWorking Matthews does a kick ass inspired, beautiful version. save the extended analysis for changing the fucking world for chirssakes.

  • This is THE quintessential Long Black Veil ... I think. Still searching.

  • @MrCharnie Johnny Cash does it better and I am also a huge fan of the Nick Cave version. I do love this version alot too though. Of course, Dave does very little wrong in my book and Tim is a fucking guitar God.

  • damn...i didnt even know Forrest Gump could sing!

  • damn ...who knew Forrest Gump could sing?

  • ahhhhhhhhhh<33333333333333

  • they all agreed the killer looked alot like me

  • A great song, and an even better pair to play it. Tim Reynolds is one of the most underrated guitarists ever. If you like Dave, you might also like The Band, and their version of this song.

  • This version isn' t bad...but Jhonny cash has an epic version...as well as spruce springsteen....

  • @truebman100 try Johnny

  • If he's not your favorite, but you sitll pay to see shows why do you dis him on his own videos? And if you think his voice and style are the worst part of the band why do you keep going to his shows? I don't know you but I know a good bit of Dave's stuff as well "witch" I really enjoy. I also attend shows when I can and find each one better than the last. Especially with the new album, I'm not sure how you can say all of the concerts are the same.

  • To be honest I can't stand his last 3 albums. His first few albums were the best by far. The main reason I liked him was his percussive style guitar playing and such.

  • @nly89 So many people just can't take change with an artist. I think the last 3 albums were amazing, amazing, amazing! Granted, different than the previous ones, but totally went hand in hand and did not lose style. There became this obvious group of so called "DMB Fans" that whined and complained because they weren't under the table and dreaming but anyone who has the slightest clue about music can see that the albums are brilliant. But you keep doing what your radio tells you to do....

  • @nly89 fag

  • @shockpencat

I did not dis him on this song in particular, I think it is great. To me this is an example of the pinnacle of his career, hence I posted this video for all to enjoy. Never said all his concerts are the same either. I like Dave but not all Dave so I guess I am not a "True Fan" whatever that means.

  • how is dave overrated? he gets the fame because people like him and buy his cd's and go to his concerts. the most popular artists right now are overrated. everyone who has the charts right now are artists like Black Eyed Peas who have ZERO talent. dave has a unique voice and has worked to get where he is.

  • I never said people like the stupid Black Eyed Peas and other commercial bands are good. I'm talking about the bands like Umphreys Mcgee, moe, String Cheese Incident, and Phish, (to name a few) that absolutely destroy daves style AND voice...witch is the worst part of that band by the way. I'll also point out the fact that I've been to his show the past 6 years, and they're basically the same every year, and I know probably more of his shit than you do, but that doesnt mean he's my favorite.

  • He is extremely under rated in my opinion.

  • while i agree, i think he prefers it that way.

  • Dave is so awsome!

  • For some reason I never get tired of watching this...

  • The Band's Long Black Veil is much much sicker

  • Thank you for that info. I just heard it and it is great. It is more contemporary and honest from them but I wont say anything against DMB version because I love the way dave sings it. My favorit version from DMB is from 'The Gorge'.

  • I love Dave soooooooooooo much! This is a great rendition! <3

  • love this song!

  • Awesome quality. You can hear each tone. I love it. I love DAVE! Sheer God/dess-given talent the contrast of his baritone and high tones. Excellent!!

  • delicate fingerpicking, baritone to semi-falsetto vocal ranges and of couse the use of "dave's chords" for the verse progression.

for such an easy song, dave made it hard to play it this well.

  • are you kidding me

  • I love it when artists do it differently every time!!! It multiplies the experience exponentially

  • I can't take Dave. He is to amazing.

  • NO SOLO TIMMY?!?!

  • i'm not a big fan of dave's but... this brings a tear to your eye. excellent rendition. just listen to the first known recording of "the country gentlemen" do it and you will see how it evolved. wooooooo-hoooooo! excellent.

  • what are you talking about

  • Superb. Thanks for posting.

  • I also prefer the "Listener Supported" version of this song. Dave is awsome, I don't think he can really do any wrong!!!!!

  • Check out the Chieftains version with Mick Jagger singing. Very well done..

  • I love the haunting long baritone/bass of Dave in the beginning. Puts another spin on it. But...

I prefer the "Listener Supported". The lovely ladies sound awesome. They spoiled me now whenever I hear this, I find myself singing the harmonies that the ladies did. But I liked this version so much that I added it to my 'favorites'. Thanks Nly81.

  • You should check out the Johnny Cash and Joni Mitchell version. Her harmonies are off the charts. It's awesome

  • no it isn't. she fails to match his voice and on top of it she got the words wrong!

  • Wow way to take me suggesting you listen to a song. Super polite.

  • Just found out this is a cover (i fail), makes more sense though. Only Cash can create lyrics this strong. But the Listener Supported version is outstanding.

  • No offense but this song was not written by Johnny Cash. This song is a country ballad and has been recorded by numerous artists. The actual writer of this song is Danny Dill in 1959. Lefty Frizzell was one of the first to record and perform this song. And imo I have no idea why Dave Mathews covers this song. I find his renditions of this song to be absolutely terrifying.

  • Anhedonic,

Lefty called, he said your gay! Night!

  • GrassRoots5

1985 called, he said he wants his joke back! Night!

  • Thats crazy....Dave Mathews did an awesome job... if not better than cash

  • The best versions, imo, have to be either by Lefty Frizzel or Jerry Garcia. This version, however, is overdone and this guy tries way too hard.

  • I'm curious how anyone can view this as overdone. How much simpler can you get than a simple guitar part and singing?

  • You're out of your mind. This is an outstanding cover. Given, it's better on Listener Supported, but Dave does a great job.

  • yeah, I love the Listener Supported version.

  • This song is one of the best ive ever heard. Brilliant version... Totally haunting!!

  • listener supported

  • Ugh, I can't stand the Lovely Ladies. Totally ruin it. The Gorge is much better.

  • really? The solo at the end is amazing.

  • hi tim, what up d

  • In ATTENDENCE - This song - first song of the last encore of the weekend (3 nights). Just Dave and Leroi! After listening to Listner Supported's version, i loved it! So when those 2 started playing it i couldn't beleive it. DMB @ the GORGE --> best weekend of the year.

  • yeah i loved the Listener Supported version

  • great version of a classic roots tune.. Dave and Tim nail this one for sure.. Good vocal range and nice pacing of the tune..the good ole grateful dead played this tune acoustic back in 69-70..great versions are out there must pre date any you tube..thanks for a nice video

  • greatness

  • That must be the version on his CD...best ever of all the originals or covers...absolutely stunning performance...anyone got it with more volume?

  • What do you mean on his CD? There is a CD with this song on it?

  • Oh, sorry, that's a different version than what I thought...the one on their Listener Supported CD is simular but it's live and with 3 black ladies singing gorgeous harmonies and over 8 minutes long...not sure where this one originated or if it's on a CD...it sure should be!

  • shit.........best version ever, hes not a bit nervous like , when he has the pressure of singing with emmylou Harris

  • you heard the version done by the band on the big pink album?

  • freakin amazing

  • Great tribute to a classic

  • Such a sad love song
