  • Congrads on getting back in bro!! Good work

  • hey great job

  • How did you hear the song through your phones and record the audio for this vid at the same time?

  • @zerk71 Look back to one of my first replys to this video, it deatails how I recorded the audio, video, and sync'ing them together. Thanks fo rlooking!

  • Great!! Keep drumming! ;)

  • What's the difference between TD-9 KX And TD-9 SX? Thanks

  • @wykisz Roland makes the SX is in the US, and the KX is everywhere else. Same kits.

  • Straight up dude, great tune and nice playing. Any major dude with half a heart will tell ya, my friend!

  • great stuff dude ive just got me a JOBEKY CUSTOM E-KIT and im going to put a td-9 brain on it i love the sounds thanks for sharing ..keep rocking dude

  • Hi there! forget about the price a second... WHY whould someone take a TD9 and not a TD12 or TD20 ? im a bloody beginner looking for the right thing to have fun the next 5+ years but i dont want to get a rubber thingy drumset. im thinking about something that s as close as possible to an ordinary accoustic drumset. any recommentations ?? ever tried an ALESIS or YAMAHA E-Drumset ? What about those??? Any Feedback and opinion will help! THANKS A LOT and keep up the groove :) You Rock!

  • The TD9 was at the right price point for me, and the 12 and 20 was too much $. Since the 9 is newer and has a new sound set, some say it even sounds better out of the box. The newest TD-20 and the expansion board to the older TD-20s are the best, but quite expensive. Regarding feel, make sure you get mesh heads, as they feel the most like acoustic heads. Haven't tried the Alesis or Yamaha products, but there are plenty of folks who like them.

  • @axel1973w I recently got a Alesis DM10 Studio, and it is GREAT, the pads are 2 in thick, think that ll do you for?

  • @alexbeast14 , ever tried ROLAND V-Drums before? because you are the first person saying that alesis drums are "great" :) anybody i talked to who ever played roland e-drums never switched to yamaha or alesis after that.

  • @axel1973w Alesis is to my satisfaction, great rebound, beautiful sound, and great looks. I like roland, but alesis is cheaper AND (to me) better.

  • @axel1973w Don't get a yamaha, they sound like the drum app on my iphone lol. alesis is ok but i much prefer roland.

  • wow, your first video after a break of 23 years, but still you nailed the beat spot on. love to listen to it. sounds really lay'd back...

thanks for sharing, and rock on :-)

  • You've still got the beat, must be like riding a bicycle !Very good.

  • can you just mute the drums from the original song, then just play to make the cover?

  • It really is impossible to mute drums due to their full range of sound from highs to lows. There's lots of drum-less tracks out there to play along to, but unfortunately, this song is not available without the drum track.

  • Im Sold!

  • so you change kd 8 to kd 120 do u think its better? how about the hi hat s feel do you think vh 11 is better?

  • I think the KD-120 is great, but try them out for yourself first...you may like the KD-8 better. It's a real personal thing. I've not tried the VH-11, but have heard how great it is in comparison to the stock CY-5/FD-8 combo.

  • In the pocket!

  • This is great dude! Obviously you left drums for 23 years but the drums never left you:P

  • Amazing man after 23 years.

  • 23 year break? Don't take those skills for granted, man! Anyway, solid stuff you got goin.

  • mamma mia.... un poco di precisione perpiacere -.-'

  • Cheers man, that's great! I think I heard about that new pad alright! Keep up the good work!

  • Hey man! Nice going! Just a quick question...is there much of a difference bewteen the kd-8 bass drum pad and the Kd120? With regards:

1: external sound. i mean as in what do people hear who don't have headohones plugged in. this is what is tempting me to buy a new one, as i think the kd-8 is a little bit too loud for my flat mates. does it make a diff?

    2: How does it feel?

3: does it make any differance to the sound produced, no? might sound like a stupid question.

    Keep on Banging!

  • The KD-120 feels more like an acoustic than the KD-8. Less bounce, and some folks don't like that, but I do. I keep the head slightly loose, but not so much as to damage the internal parts (there is a danger of this with heads that are TOO loose). Noise wise, it is quieter than the KD-8, but it is certainly not silent. As far as the sound produced from the module, it is the same, because the module triggers the same sounds...so nothing new there. There's a new KD-140 out, but WAY overpriced.

  • hi there mate im just wondering how you recorded the kit? howd you do it!

  • The video and audio were recorded simultaneously but to different sources, The video was recorded with a digital camera in video mode. The music was run through the drum module and the mix of me playing with the music was recorded on the computer. I then stripped out the audio from the video file (which was just the sound of taps on the pads) and sync'ed in the recorded audio mix.

  • ahh i thought it was that!

howd you record through the comp, MIDI through, or another option, only thing is im looking im getting one of these for a studio! just wondering if its possible

  • I recorded the straight audio using the modules' sounds. You certainly could use midi, and have it trigger VSTs like Addictive Drums, SuperiorDrummer, etc. for even better sound. Good luck with the kit, you'll love it.

  • how much inch is your snare

  • That's the PD-105, which is 10 inches in diameter. I'm considering ugrading to the 12 inch snare.

  • half time shuffle groove?

  • Why the upgrade on the kick pad? Any other mods? Why? I'm new to electronic drums but gonna get one of these next month....appreciate the advice...you're really good... :-)

  • I upgraded, because it feels more like a large acoustic bass drum. The rubber kick pad included with the TD9 kit is more bouncy and less "floppy". Many prefer this feeling, but I didn't. Best bet for you is to try it out for a while, then sell it if you want to upgrade. Roland parts hold their value quite well.

And thanks for the props. :)

  • sounds great but wheres all the snare ghost notes thats what makes the purdie shuffle so pretty

  • Your not listening close enough. :)

They are there, it's just not loud enough in the mix.

  • theyre innnvissssibbbleee : O

  • ghost notes are just low taps...there, there just crank it XD

  • You did an excellent job on this song, great drum sound!

  • How much did this kit cost you, I can't find a price on any music store site

  • roland td9 KX not sx

  • KX and SX are the same. It is the SX in the U.S. and KX everywhere else.

  • It was around $1,900, but I got it when it first came out. It has gone up quite a bit since then.

  • wow... then you sound awesome... i'm glad you mentioned imovie.. obviously you use a mac... let me ask you, are you able to hook up your drumset to your mac via midi and record what you're playing in garage band?

  • Running midi out of the module into GarageBand is no problem, you just need a decent midi cable. The Edirol (Roland) cable is most consistent. You can also use it to trigger VST samples like Toontrack Superior or EZDrummer.

  • Dude, did you load the original song on top of your video to make it sound like you play as well as you appear to? No disrespect, just wondering how you would sound without the original song on top.

  • The song wasn't on top...I was. I played live to the song with the audio run through the module. I recorded that mix to the computer while simultaneously recording the video. The audio and video were synced in iMovie. If you use headphones while watching this, you can clearly hear the difference between me and Bernard Purdie, because I made my drumming more "up front " in the mix....you'll hear all my mistakes much clearer. :)

  • Well you chose a great song to do a first video on. Welcome back...its like riding a bike. God Bless

  • i dont get how u can stop drumming for that long. everyday i come home i wanna play at least a little.

  • Apartment life, then kids....it's amazing how hard it was to find a suitable place to play acoustic drums. Now, I play in my basement...sometimes at 3 a.m., and no one but me hears it!

  • I started playing last year after stopping in 87. So, yep 20 years off as well. I also bought a Roland TD 9 kit and just this afternoon I finally got the Purdie Shuffle down. (After 2 months of frustration) I looked up youtube to 'check' that it sounded the same and found this. Good work btw.

  • that was great

  • this is very good!

  • Thanks, VERY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD.

  • Hey man, 23 years?? Hah, I'd like to see you back then! Great drumming man, very economical but still present.

    Keep it up brotha!

  • Excellent drumming.

PLus this song is one of my favorite.

Did you see the Classic Album video about the recording of Aja ?

  • Thanks. The Classic Album video about Aja is great!

  • Im looking at buying one of these i cant help but notice the bass drum it doesnt look like a standard 9 series it looks like a 12 series.

  • I upgraded the kick pad to the KD-120. It is the one that is part of the TD-20 kit, and I'm glad I made the switch.

  • Love that snare sound. So tight :)

  • tight drummin bro, nice work

  • Omg nice playing, and omg thank you for playing the drums with these drums recording in a good camera because this video sounds so good it just makes me not care about w/e is happening right now, nice drumming, nice kit you got there, and thank you for posting this video. the music in the video made me relaxed and happy.

  • never ever put the sticks down....great playing

  • Which voice did you use on your kit ? Sorry for my inglish . . .

  • As best I can remember, that is the V-Tour kit (#1). I have edited the snare a bit from the original, I think it is +10 or +15 on the head tuning.

  • great! can you teach me how to record my playing on the Vdrums to a computer?

  • I recorded the video with a standard digital camera, but in video mode. I simultaneously recorded the audio (the song track and the module's sound) into the computer with a shareware audio recording program (in this case, it was SoundStudio for Mac). I brought the video into iMovie and stripped away the audio (which was only the sound of the sticks on the pads) and imported the recorded audio. I had to synch the audio and the video together, then output to an mpeg in iMovie. Hope this helps...

  • Ah right thanks. How do you like the FD-8? Whenever i've played on the lower rolands without the VH-11 I've always felt it to be less responsive and I have to change how i play the hats to use them effeciently.

  • So far, it has been OK. I figured when I got the kit, the next upgrade would be to the VH-11, but it has been better than I expected. Although, I have had to tweak a number of sensitivity and curve settings in the module to get it where I like it.

  • Is the bass pad in this video the one that comes with the sx?

In all the stock pictures it's the smaller black pad.

  • You are correct, the stock pad with the TD9-SX is the rubber KD-8. I upgraded to the KD-120, and like the toms is mesh. It feels more like an acoustic head.

  • nice playing

  • I love steely dan.

  • The Purdie Shuffle is not easy to play, even for experienced drummers but you are doing just fine here. The many ghost-notes makes it tricky to get the bass-drum groove right, but you do that fine as well.

A good way of getting the Purdie right when learning it is to play the hihat and ride as a normal shuffle without the ghost notes; just focus on bass drum and snare drum. Once you have that feel right, the ghost notes typically follow automatically.

    Keep drumming (****)

  • Thanks for the tips. I know how important the ghost notes are, but I guess i focused too much on them without first nailing the basic groove. Back to practice....

  • Purdie shuffle is actually a double paradidlle, just like Toto's Rosanna by Jeff Procaro. Its an Afro cuban 6/8 on the ride cymbal.

  • Nice work. :-)

I share your fascination with the Purdie Shuffle. Love the little extra fill at the end ;-)
