@TheRandom8or Yellow, Gold, and Silver worked in a regular GB/GB Pocket, but put Gold or Silver in a GB Color and it will display in color. Yellow does too, but the colors aren't as diverse. Crystal only works in a GB Color.

Since I had a fairly big collection of Game Boy games (from all 4types), some people used to ask me which games were compatible with which consoles. I said...

Type 1: Game Boy (solid color carts): Work on GB (no color), GBC & GBA (little color)

Type 2: Game Boy Color (also solid color carts): Work on GB (no color), GBC & GBA (full color)

Type 3: Game Boy Color (clear carts) Work only with GBC & GBA

Type 4: Game Boy Advance (small carts) Only for GBA

Of course, this was the pre DS era.

In your terms, they were basically Type 1s and Type 2s, but had color palettes and special borders programmed in for when the game was played on a Super Gameboy.
