1st off im a huge fan of what you do. I have learned so much from you in the past year its crazy. lol I have a question. When your working toward "completing" a song or when its near completion how many SCENES do you usually have on average in session view before moving to arrange view? Do you have any formulas that you stick by for arrangement? (Intro, Verse, Build, Hook, blah blah) I wanted to purchase one of your open source songs but i wasn't sure if the Session view would be full.
Way to take control of your life and moving ALWAYS stimulates creativity and new perspective. I hope you get the best out of this coming period in your life and thank you for your overwhelming generosity!
@ultraturbolicious You are truly welcome. Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm sure the fruits of this time spent working on tunes will be plentiful :)
Big changes - big balls - big move! Absolutely stoked about this move Vespers! I am sure I will be not the only one to say that I wish, I really wish that I would have been able to do this in my life when I was younger, but life sometimes is brutal shit and you do what you do to survive. I felt like this when I stayed for a week at Orcas island in a cabin. I thought - jeez, this will be an ideal place to have a studio and write music! But just when I thought I was out - life sucked me back in.
@SychovskiBeat Thanks mate. Now that you've had a taste of Island life, if you want it enough, I'm sure you can create it for yourself. Let me know what I can do to support! Orcas is amazing. I know a few peeps there. I'll actually be coming down for a month to mix and master my album on Orcas. You should come visit.
@DJVespers thanks bro! now it will be so much harder to make something like this happen: 2 kids, house, and boom: not much freedom to relocate! lol...but anyway, I will try as soon as I can, didn't know there was a mastering studio there though! that's interesting! You know, there I really felt like "time" didn't really matter, it was just different beat to the whole life routine. . . .will follow your progress closely man!
@SychovskiBeat For sure. Time slows down on the island where no one really pays much attention to it. Just melts away. All the best to you and your musical journey.
The guy that has the most thumbs up in the comments said everything that i want to say but i really want to tell you that i appreciate you ALLOT for everything you do. Your life style change is just amazing you've taken a hard but a great decision. I wish you all the best from now on !
"...living on purpose..." I like that. There's no denying, if you hold on, you'll be doing just that. I hope this tree bears bountiful quantities of fruits for you, even in ways you may not yet realise. You're young and attacking your destiny and that sets a great example for everyone within earshot. Cheers and all the best to you and your endeavour(s).
@djemptyx Thank you. Wise words for sure. It's take me 33 years to get up the confidence and courage to take this on. Now that I'm 100% on track, I feel better than ever. I hope this move encourages some of the other musicians on this channel to take on similar changes and I'm amped to hear about them! Love and light.
@DJVespers I do hope what you are doing positively inspires others to consider similar endeavours. Getting away from the "noise" allows the music and soul a place to breathe. Love and light to you as well...Light snow & ice, that is. Cheers :)
Very cool man, that's a ballsy move. I plan on doing something similar when I finish up with college. I'm pumped to see what you'll be coming out with!
One thing, when you release the project files, can you release it in a versioned form? i.e. rather than just selling the final ableton set, it'd be awesome if you'd sell a combined package with every step of the process including stuff that you ended up taking out. Then we can see your thought process and workflow too.
Im the same, Im gonna get a high education so I can get a well paid job, so I THEN can use less time on work and more on learning music, but still earn enough money for my family
I'm stoked hearing the new album dude! Think the decision to just go, get away and make music in a totally new environment is fantastic. Hope everything goes well, best of luck!
dude, kudos on making such a dedicated move in your life. I feel i am on the same path of learning and developing and I am coming to that point where tunes need to get finished.
Vespers, thats an awsome idea. I think isolating the ouside may help you explore you own self and relation to the rest of the world through music. Thats a good thing and I wish you the best in youre creative endevours. :)

AWESOME! I'm glad to hear you're doing an album. EP's are grand but there's generally no real theme to them. I know the point of them is to show off a few excellent songs but still. I'd rather an album full of stuff :)
We love you man! Wishing you and Taylor the best. I'll be sure to start throwing some cash your way asap! This is definitely something you gotta do I'm glad you're making the decision to let the musical energy cook for a while. Can't wait to hear it and get my hands on the material in ableton.
Good luck vespers, really happy to hear your taking a risk and doing what you love. 7 weeks today I am packing up my life here in England and going to Colombia for two months, hopefully longer. It does feel like a big deal to change things up so much but at the same time its very liberating. Really looking forward to hearing the music and watching your progress, much love...........
I don't think anyone has any idea (myself included) of what you're capable of. VERY excited to hear what you come out with after this step in your journey. Definitely donating and purchasing your set templates.
Locking yourself up on a remote island, not sure if that's the right way to improve productivity. I mean those small cottage walls can become huge easily when this is all you will see the next couple of months. Also the pressure of producing an album in 3 months can have its boomerang effect as well as the danger of writers block is even more present now.
Guess this "prison lock" producing is a double edged sword, hope it works out well for you.
@Drrolfski I've never experienced writers block in my life. When you make yourself open and allow the inspiration to channel through you, you're never cut off from ideas. My only gap before this was the time and ability to focus. I'm thankful I have that now.
It's how i feel man! But, i'm 17 and i feel very frustrated, and sometimes i actually get 'afraid' to work on something...i think it's just the fact of plugins crashing or me being afraid of failing big time...i don't know. I used to be able to work nonstop for awhile but for 4 months it hasn't gotten anywhere, with a lot of unfinished projects...i love music, but it's like i can't finish anything...any tips?
@DJPaggos go check out the opiuo interview if you havent yet, everyone will have second thoughts about their ideas and become discouraged but it is rather the perseverance and searching that make the ultimate result unique and special.
@DJPaggos i just attended a workshop that emphasized too many people are held back by fear and i wondered why that would apply to me since ive anything but fear but perhaps that was for me to pass on, the universe works in weird ways. But on that subject I was encouraged to keep a journal and write in it every morning, put my worries and problems on paper and clear my mind of them from nagging me during the day, and to keep so busy i didnt have time to think about fear. live the 5min rule
@joeblack949 Thanks a lot mate, it means a lot with this response! I think ill just keep moving along and make things work...ill continue putting what is on my head into my DAW, i just get afraid to open it sometimes because it's like ill never finish an idea...with FL it's easy to put things down, but still eh idk
@DJPaggos im strictly ableton so im not sure about workflow in fruity loops, but if you have a problem completing songs then its a problem with workflow, forget about goals cuz they go nowhere, break things up into plans and actions, break them up into a series of problems and answer those problems.ive yet to find a youtube really speaking about this kind of stuff, that's what a mentor is for, seek a mentor whos successful and learn from them. good luck man
@joeblack949 Well in ableton, it seemed like the workflow was odd with midi and i didn't really know how to sequence, even after looking at it, eh Thanks a lot man!
@DJPaggos another thing is to dont be afraid of what others think, if you think its good music its good music, who cares if johnny cubicle says your music sucks or your grandparents say your never going to make a living with music. imagine if you died right now and hypothetically you were forced to watch your life up to this point on repeat for all of eternity, would you change anything or would you be happy with it? that's a huge one to think on for awhile, good luck man :D
@DJPaggos take it step by step. pick one small thing you want to get done and then don't get sidetracked. the more you limit yourself, the easier it gets
@Xo1ot1 It's just opening up the software and working at it that i have trouble with, it's like i get sidetracked and go on youtube, or a game, or whatever...and i just 'don't' work on anything, idk what it is! It wasn't like that when i first started making music, but it is now.
@DJPaggos classic plateau state that happens in every learning journey. Enjoy this and work on boring but useful technical stuff to re ignite your creativity. (music theory, mixing skills, synth design...)
@DJPaggos everyone that tries to produce music feels like that. its not easy but dont give up. go ahead and crash into the mountain for as long as it takes. you will fly over it in time. your 17 and you will learn a lot by not trying to be 22 or 25 too soon. if you keep at it you will be very very young and producing your music at pro level. dont give up.
@DJPaggos Thanks for your vulnerability and openness with this comment. Truly, you have your whole life ahead of you. Take the pressure off yourself and you will enjoy the journey more. If you're present and in the moment with your tunes, things will flow effortlessly. In the grand scheme of things, 4 months is a blink of an eye. How long to you think a pianist needs to practice before playing a concert? About 10,000 hours. Read Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers and you'll understand more
@DJVespers Well i literally used to spend around 12 hours a day learning new things about synthesis, music theory, playing...etc about 2 years ago, and i took a little break and it seems over recent years, it's been pretty slow pace, it's weird...I'm pretty good at piano, but sometimes it feels like i have to be more interactive with my modulations and such, which FL studio lacks at. I also try to learn ableton, but it doesn't suit my workflow in some ways as well. Hm. Maybe it's an excuse.
dude, I love your music, I love your lessons, I love your philosophy, I love your mindset, I love what you're doing with the music you get with the donations. You got yourself a big supporter!
All I can say is WOW! You are a visionary, I wish I could go off and do that right now. Although I already do that on a day to day basis. I live an hour ferry ride away from Seattle near Bainbridge Island we have that slower paced life here. I feel like I can work on music more efficiently and organically here than over in the busyness of Seattle. I love the city, it is where the party happens. but I've finally come to terms with the fact that I need to have my introverted studio time. <3 Cheers
@afterlightmusic Oh, crazy. I was just on Orcas Island down around there recently. How close are you to Orcas? I'll be back there in March to mix and master the album.
Living in a cottage on a lake, on a small island...and you didn't put any of that in the video? Come on! Sounds awesome, get some footage.

Xo1ot1 2 months ago
@Xo1ot1 It's just opening up the software and working at it that i have trouble with, it's like i get sidetracked and go on youtube, or a game, or whatever...and i just 'don't' work on anything, idk what it is! It wasn't like that when i first started making music, but it is now.

@DJPaggos classic plateau state that happens in every learning journey. Enjoy this and work on boring but useful technical stuff to re ignite your creativity. (music theory, mixing skills, synth design...)
linkward 2 months ago
@linkward I do this all the time! Religiously, it's like i can't seem to focus for more than 20 minutes...hm
DJPaggos 2 months ago
@DJPaggos 20 min is already a lot !
linkward 2 months ago
@linkward i used to be able to focus for like 9 hours one session...a year ago

@DJPaggos check out the video I just posted about focus in the studio. This should speak directly to your comment.

@DJPaggos I'd settle on one program and stick with it for a while. Each program is quite complex and has a large learning curve.
