Lao and Thai are almost the same language,except spoken with different accent. Lao language they have 3 different accents and the ones that immigrated to Thailand created more Lao dialects such as the Chiang Mai dialect or Isaan which is all Lao.Anyways 80% of Lao and Thai words are the same and most of the ones that are different rhymes.
If you are keen to learn Thai the best software is a Thai girl. Get friendly with one and she will teach you on the fast track. That is how I learned it.
