  • Just sing closer to the heart to cover!

  • Rush doesn't make mistakes. It's the other way they play their songs.

  • @BrettDixonMusic : indeed brutha

  • awwww. I was hoping for "...closer to the....um, you know. That thing."

  • this sound like is from the 70's, early on, and perhaps a very new version/song for them.

  • Well lets see you learn and write music for 30 + years and be considered one of the best bassists in th world and not forget a word or 2 ritten like 30 years ago ok.....forgetting a few words doesnt make th song any less great eethr

  • it doesnt sound like he's forgetting the lyrics. they just simply need better mics and need to turn it up abit. the guy at the soundboards an idiot

  • "Nerd Alert!" What did you forget today? How to perform in front of thousands?Nice job kev. Write a few hundred cool songs so that we can watch your every move. Douch. Bag. Find something else you like that draws an income.

  • "I hope they play Bangkok. Nah, they never play Bangkok."

  • @HartsChannel

They did on Snakes and arrows in Pittsburgh

  • @kefaas1 Lol No it's from the opening video to R30 with Jerry Stiller. I do wish they would play it more often than once in a while

  • he probably didnt like everyone singing along.

  • And this is funny because................? Whoever posted this, if you can produce just one other singer from any type of musical performance, that hasn't ever messed up on stage, please point them out. He didn't forget the lyrics, he just messed up. So you name me just one, only need one, example of this not happening to everyone else at some time in their career, and I'll give you the merit you THINK you deserve. Guy up at the top sums it up! jabezscratch you ROCK!

  • @82screamer - first of all, I completely agree with you - it's a non-issue because it happens in some way or another to everyone who performs, no biggie, that's why we go see human beings perform instead of gathering to listen to a recording played.

But I had to laugh at the following phrase: "...name me just ONE, only need one, example of this NOT happening to EVERYONE else..." I think we're going to have to get a PhD in logic to untwist that... ;)

  • @svyt Whoa, what was that? I think my intent was there, but I really phrased that wrong. If you can ever actually provide me an example of something NOT happening, I'll be impressed. I don't know how you caught that, but probably 100 people will claim they saw it too. Good eye, and no offense taken either. I guess this sorta' proves my point, Geddy isn't the only one who makes an error. I'm gonna' go lie down. That scares me, I'm gettin' old!! :)

  • @82screamer - heh heh - I totally knew what you meant, (and agree!) I just got a grin out of your phrasing!

  • @svyt I got a pretty good grin myself. Glad I was able to give you one too! You must be a RUSH fan, (I assume), so here's to Rock HOF???!!!

  • The fact that he allegedly forgot the words is irrelvant. I've worked with singer/songwriters who forget the words to their songs quite often. It really doesn't matter in performance. You need to focus on the total impact of the performance...forgetting words can actually ENDEAR the audience to the performance...think of it that way!

  • I've been playing "live" for close to 20 years....shit still happens no matter the preparation.

  • i guaruntee this was right after they wrote the song and were trying it live

  • @joeyo2424 This clip is definitely early, because he is using his Rickenbacker bass, which was not really used on tour after 1982 until they started to play A Passage to Bangkok again in 2007.

  • I forget stuff all the time, i blame it on sometimers, sometimes i remember sometimes i don't, lol.

  • i remember reading somewhere paul McCartney forgot he words to I SAW HER STANDING THERE while on stage.......it happens....big deal....i forget stuff i"ve done over the last 30+ years...i blame ot on OLD AGE...LOL

  • you know what shit happens so fuckin what, only asswholes make a big deal about it.get a life!

    !

  • guys they're getting old

  • To all of the people that had something negative to say- The next time you forget something remember that even geddy lee forgot the lyrics to this song. then you won't feel so bad about the fact that you are a nobody!!!

  • If you've never heard the song, you wouldn't know the difference. That's how good, Rush is.

  • when you start a band that has lasted over 30years and sold as many albumes as RUSH then you may speak...till then back the fuck off

  • cmon...lol it can happen... he just had a moment of "blankness"

  • try to play hundreds of shows not to mention singing and playing an instrument simulatneously

  • @scat4u two instruments!

  • @scat4u For half of the video the bass hadn't even come in yet haha

  • @hat6036 ye yer right geddy lee sucks

  • @scat4u nice play, troll duo

  • So f---ng what! I've been on stage and forgot lyrics before; so have friends of mine. Even the best (or in Geddy's case the best of the best of the best) have done it. Rush is still the BEST!!!

  • My dad was at that concert. He had a sickness and he kept losing his mind. They did the song on the very end and was PERFECT! rush forever <3

  • AND THE MEN WHO HOLD HIG PLACES MUST BE THE ONES WHO START TO FORM A NEW MENTALITY CLOSER TO THE HEART! LOL

    Rush rocks anyway.

  • @skifan07 It's Bad audio but I can definitely tell that that's Young Geddy when his pitch was higher, like I said before, Mistakes can happen, and what you yelled at me in the other video for fights your opinion on this one, when are you gonna stop this spirited trolling. Now Imma go over to the 2112 Trainwreck and see if your not over there saying that this isn't Rush or somethin' like that

  • @skifan07 No, he definitely forgot the lyrics and everyone knows it. But it's no big deal

  • @hat6036 It's funny though because that's one of the songs he wrote.

  • @hirofan I think you're getting this song confused with Cinderella Man. That's the one that Geddy wrote the lyrics to on A Farewell to Kings

  • yikes that was ugly.....

  • rare mishap

  • He forgets the words to In The End on All The Worlds A Stage

  • I didnt think God made mistakes, guess this is fake, LOL

  • This must have been a long, long time ago. The above picture is from Vapor Trails (10 years ago), and you can clearly see Geddy's lyrics monitor (in front of the second dryer). Technology. He doesn't forget lyrics anymore, because they are right in front of his vocal mike. Unless he forgets to wear his glasses.........

  • As if ANYONE cares if he forgets a few words of lyrics in like a 3.5h show or however long they play. It's not like he loses any respect from their fans.

  • @TharrGuardian true, and they have like god damn 20 albums

  • to mold a new fatality, closer to the heart ??? MK ??

  • So what? Geddy is a human to and human make mistakes.

  • @MrNatalRocks What you meant was Geddy is bass/vocal playing android and he malfunctioned.

  • @MrNatalRocks like not pluralizing words that should very well be pluralized?

  • Give the guy a chance. You can't expect him to play bass and sing at the same ti - oh, wait, this is Geddy Lee we're talking about. Never mind.

  • "I'M GEDDY LEE, I'LL SING WHATEVER LYRICS I WANT"

  • @CelestialMemories72 Hahaha !

  • @CelestialMemories72 that is the right way to think of it. because he is still parto f an amazing band.

  • @CelestialMemories72 Well said sir... well said..

  • wait where was the mistake? LOL I didn't hear it? -___-

    ....those are professionals my friend.

  • 3 of the world's most technical musicians playing the most technical rock music for the past 40 years are going to make 1 maybe 2 mistakes.

  • I'd rather here him make an honest human mistake- than to be busted for lip-sinking!!!!

This just makes me respect them that much MORE!!!!

  • still a good sing mess up or not

  • They do this to make us believe that theyre human

  • Messing up is not that big of a deal. Forgetting the lyrics actually spawned the soloing version of vocals know as "scatting".

  • that was not a fail, that always happens at concerts when it's recorded from the audience

  • Really, when going between 5 different things onstage i'm surprised it doesn't happen to him more often. Just saw them last week. Didn't miss a beat.

  • fail

  • Contrary to popular belief Geddy Lee is not a human not a robot

  • @stratOcasta17 He's a god?

  • GEDDY LEE ATE MY GF's BABY!

  • @dwilmer7 Good for him :D

  • I'm not even sure that he messed up. It sounds like an audio problem to me.

  • No big problem, listen to all his back-up singers he has. :)

  • This is proof that they sound just as good live as they do in they're albums.

  • will ferral?

  • give geddy a break he has to remember hundreds of songs

  • top 5 people i want to meet

    1. getty lee

    2. alex lifeson

    3.neil peart

    4. bear gril

    5. will ferral

    agree .... ?

  • @ronthebird you spelled geddy wrong, bear grylls and will ferrell wrong. But i do agree with your selection. nice list

  • @ronthebird

    1) alex lifeson

    2) geddy lee

    3) neil pert

    4) lemmy

    5) dave grhole

  • oh well shit happens...you want something funny...check out far cry and la villa strangiato on the time machine tour in boston when alex's guitar cuts out...

  • I was lucky enough to see a Rush concert in August, and it was the greatest experience of my life. I wouldn't care if he forgot the lyrics to every song, I would still be simply amazed at what I saw.

  • Nice save by Geddy!

  • This is simply what happens when you have a rue band on the stage that's not lipsyncing at the opposite of Justin Bieber

  • Geddy was probably high as a kite

  • @AkiraFollower you get a contact high at rush concerts, try going to one. and shit the guy still kicks more ass than anyone alive today especially for his age, their live is so much better than album.

  • @Suicideonastick I know ive been to 2 Rush concerts =p they have columns of smoke rising from the seats

  • @AkiraFollower i wanna smoke with rush :D lol

  • When I screw up my lyrics no one notices. Probably because I've never sold a record yet!

  • Okay, so Geddy got distracted. Even GOD makes mistakes. That's why we have politicians.

  • Geddy once said that he had a "Spinal Tap Moment" when he forgot the words to this song. This must be the actual footage!

  • Rush failing on one of their songs is still the equavilent of any other band nailing one their own songs. Case closed. Start hitting "Like."

  • Comment removed

  • This isn't an epic fail

  • Bad quality bootlegs like this are not meant to be shared

  • SHITTY QUALITY EQUALS some sounds that don't come out on audio aka the mic missed the lyrics due to shitty quality

  • EPIC FAIL? I would not categorize this as an EPIC FAIL., by any stretch of the imagination. How many other groups have messed up lines or hit the wrong note, at some point in their careers?

But the awards and recognitions they have accumulated over the yrs speask volumes

  • man he just took a breath. ever gone on tour? and sang all night almost every night for a year or more? that's called breathing. he may of had to clear his throat or a million other things could have happened. no biggie, that's why he's Geddy Lee and you're... nobody.

  • Still sung it right

  • If you listen closely he switches the verses. Doesn't sound like he's singing with enough conviction to sound like he's doing this intentionally. My 2 cents.

  • Yeah i highly doubt he actually forgot the lyrics..Geddy has said Rush has performed this song so many friggin times he probably got tired of it and did it on purpose

  • @TheChugulator Yeah i watched some interviews where he said that they performed the song so much that they got tired to play it

  • it's not a fail he said the lyrics it is just so shity quality it seems like he is not singing them

  • Jesus, you make it seem like this is new. This was recorded (if I remember my bootlegs correctly) on tour before that song was even recorded for AFTK's. No teleprompters back then and he forgot the new lyrics he had just learned. Get a life people and check the facts before you post this shit.

  • Aww give the guy a break, he's only been singing it for 30 years! (heh, heh). By the way, will Geddy's laundry ever be done?

  • He probably just swallowed his gum. Lol. Geddy is a God and don't you forget it. :)

  • The sound quality is so shitty in this video i can't even tell if he really did forget lyrics or if your just fucking with us

  • What matters is that he kept his professionalism and went with the song and kept going and tried to make it work.

  • You wouldn't see John Anderson doing that.

  • @Satonica

Exactly! Your the only person who understands the most. During live shows, bands have about 12 trillion lyrics going through their heads. And dont forget all of the guitar parts and drum parts that they have to remember. As long as they keep a postitve attitude and keep playing, that is really all that matters. I do that with my band all the time...

  • lol it isnt a fail just bad sound quality he just said them at a lower tone and camera could not pick them up

  • sounds like a guy with his nut sack twisted up in his underwear.

  • yea, but he had 10,000 backup singers to help him

  • Sounds ancient.

  • I LOVE YOU GEDDY!!

  • can someone explain to me where exactly it is?

  • They're human. So what? Rush still is the greatest band to ever walk the earth so one simple mistake doesn't matter. A true fan stands by his favorite band, even in their mistakes.

  • That's probably just something wrong with the mic. He wouldn't forget after 30 or 40(depending on which concert this is) of doing it.

  • I'm not sure whether this is really Geddy, but there's no way he can forget those lyrics nowadays. Aside from the fact that they have played it way too many times, they have teleprompters.

  • @luistijerina whats a teleprompter?

  • @tjrox12199 A little screen on the floor of the stage from where the singer can read the lyrics. It's used as a backup, singers do memorize lyrics, they have to face the audience.

  • I wonder what Alex and Neil were thinking hahaha.

  • Called hi-tech teleprompter......

Shows that they are Human also....even tho we look at them as Gods in there own right !!

  • They have over 20 albums, and several hundred songs. And Geddy the God is playing keys with his feet, bass with his hands, and vocals with his Godly throat. Give him a break.

  • Everyone screws up sometimes. These guys have played this song thousands of times. I defy anyone to do the same task again & again without ever making a mistake or forgetting something. Rush Rule!

  • Not a big deal. It happens to all singers at some point. At least he knew to keep going. I saw Def Leppard on VH1 a few years ago and Joe Elliot forgot the opening lyrics to Rock of Ages and made the band stop and start over. That wasn't good. Completely lost the vibe.

  • Shit happens. relax! It's a band and a song. It's not like forgot the nuclear bomb code or anything.

  • I just heard them play Closer to the Heart live last night, so not sure where your comment came from.

  • I wonder is this the real reason they decided to stop playing Closer to the Heart live? ;)

  • is there a full version of this avaiable?

  • WTF... You never stood staring into the fridge cuz you forgot what you went there for in the first place but were too stubborn to close the door and admit to yourself? The brain is a scary thing lol

  • Sounds like a brain fart. I have those all the time like most people do, unless your a robot! lol

  • they are the best band EVER

  • Everytime I have seen Rush make a mistake, they will laugh at themselves onstage. I can appreciate a band that doesn't take themselves too seriously and can enjoy the whole atmosphere even after about a zillion gigs.

  • xDDDD BLACKSMITH AND THE ARTIST REFLECT IT IN THEIR ART THE FORGE THEIR CREATIVITY CLOSER TO THE HEART GEDDY!!!!!!!! but anyways its cool not a big deal...at least he kept going and didnt stop and be like uhhhhhhh next song

  • only human, only human

  • @JaskaJunior no...intentional error..to conseal alien identity

  • he might of just had to breath

  • I saw Bon Jovi a few months ago and happened to be sitting on the side and a bit behind. I snapped a few pictures and when I looked at them on my computer, I could see a TV in a monitor box that had all the words on it. And it wasn't the song list either, it was the actual words to the song. People are people, people forget.

  • lol, no no no...ive hear that clip before, and...it was recorded before they even recorded the song in late 1976, before farewell to kings even came out ,and it was still getting work and changes, so Geddy at that point wasnt even finished with the song plus had not quite mastered what was to become the finished song, everyone look at others on here, there is a rare tom sawyer that sounds different from what was to be complete in 1981.

  • @katescharacters oh? thats intresting...

  • Ok all u critics, u know the words, dont just sing, let's hear u perform the song too! Grab 2 other guys and record it......................C'mon post it! Then do a couple dozen more Ruch tunes while your at it

  • I'm just glad to hear that they actually are human. This is the first mistake I've ever heard any of them make. Wow. To be so good.

  • It could have been he was trying to get the crowd to sing?

  • It's called audience participation, ever seen that with live performances when the audience is singing loudly??? What's wrong with you people? Granted, he said mentality instead of reality in the first line, but that was the only mistake.

  • you are a HAXOR AND THIS IS LIES!!!!!!

  • Ahh, big deal, It can only be expected since they've been playing music over 40 years.

  • So what if he forgot the lyrics, he's Geddy Lee. He's getting to the elderly point in life, so he'll forget a few lyrics.

  • this is not an epic fail. Our last president, that..was an epic fail. The new automated program direction on radio..that is an epic fail. a TRUE rush fan saying epic fail about rush..THAT is definitely an epic fail. Geddy forgetting a few phrases...that is refreshing because most of the time, Rush are perfect.

  • @fundy76 You mean the one who tried to walk through a window at the whitehouse ?

  • THIS is NO EPIC FAIL. This is simply what happens to every band out there at one time or another. Humans are NOT perfect, but Rush is about as close as you can get. A simple distraction is enough to make a singer forget where he was for a second. Absolutely NO big deal at all.

  • @Satonica Exactly. It happens to EVERY vocalist ever.

  • @Satonica lol good to hear i was begining to think they were aliens...now i know there human

  • anyone else got a boner?

  • This is early rush 70's im sure of that ,so if he forgot the lyrics ,thats very okay , they were still new

  • oh well. still love rush. pretty funny though.

  • stupid geddy:D

  • in a room all by themselves toiling in practice over highly technical matters. Guitars are especially technical because the frets & strings make a grid with infinite combinations that require high degrees of raw "geek" cranialism

It only because musical instruments emanate really cool sounds that people extrapolate that coolness to attribute it to the musicians also. Oh, and also because panties fly into them are the reasons why people don't perceive musicians as "geeks"

    Rush R Major Geeks

  • @Chuichupachichi -- Yep, they said so themselves.

  • He was most likely got distracted thinking about all the pu**y he was going to get after the show.

  • wow I like the sound lol

  • that sounded like he got distracted for technical reasons, you can still hear him as if it were broken up

  • Oh, yea, but that doesn't count because "Closer To The Heart" is the one song for which it's OK to forget it's lyrics. Due to the fact that everybody in the audience knows & sings them anyway. Therefor, the whole song gets sung no matter what & everybody gets what they paid for... plus complimentary lasers too

  • @Chuichupachichi good way to think of it

  • ye dude i thnk i think he got it ddnt he it was just a mic probrem sounded to me lol

  • could be a microphone problem, because I still heard it, but faintly

  • Yeah, but the first part is wrong. the men who hold high places are supposed to mold a new reality not sow a new mentality at the beginning. He did screw this one up. But hey, its Rush. After 40 years of touring they are entitled to a mistake or two. At least they've never been forced to quit after two songs and gotten rocks thrown at them like pickleback

  • to mold a new mentality??

plus the second verse, he screwed up everything but closer to the heart.

    hahah very funny
