On a side note, I don't think Hugo Chavez closed down any news networks, in fact I think he purposefully implemented policies to allow for a free media...ironically a kind of FOX phenomenon occurred over there where the privately owned networks demonized him as much as possible and were utterly biased in their reporting, supporting an undemocratic coup. I get all my news from the net now, Main stream has become a journalistic joke. No one asks the hard questions because they don't want people not to come on, and everyone sprinkles in their opinion for their own bias.
There is way too much opinion in news and the people need to get outraged enough to do something about. I just don't know exactly how, either by not watching them or some other means to fight it by organizing for an unbiased media network that just tells us what's up.

I remember one episode of the Fox show *The Simpsons* that made fun of Fox News. One of the characters was watching Fox News. I don't remember the topic. But I remember crawls that asked things such as "Do Democrats cause cancer?" In effect, the Obama administration announced its policy on Fox News. But I do kind of wish the White House had stayed above it and let the DNC and us grunts do the push back.

Well put, but the fact is that Cenk is right, they do present opinion as fact, and they are liars. They should be forced to come clean about their right wing bias and stop calling themselves fair and balanced, but that would require government intervention in the running of the show - so the cleanest way to deal with the problem is to simply call them what they are and refuse to deal with them. Fox encourages so much idiocy in America that they should be defined a terrorist organisation.

So, at first she said that blaming a few members of the fox organization is the right way to have addressed the problem, when she herself is blaming the "government" for what one administration says. "The Free Press" How can it be a free press when it's corporate sponsored and required to generate huge amounts of revenue through ratings. FNC gets huge ratings for the same reason Reality Television shows do. Ms. Mac Nichol basically admits that Fox News has only two journalists working for them. Shepherd Smith and Major Garrett . I don't disagree with that. Smith hosts two hours a day, and most of Garrett's appearances are on Smith's shows, so Fox News presents a little more than two hours of actual news every day.

mediaite is a bit of strange website that follows media. its owned and run by former msnbc host dan abrams, who is also the current legal correspondent at NBC, and pretty much a liberal if you listen to him talk, so its weird that he would be running a site that is pretty much apologists to fox news all the time.
glynnis was nice and the debate was very cordial, but she constantly tried to rationalize fox news' actions and the claim that they arent a new organization without any real evidence.

Cenk doesn't realize" There are no news organizations" All have an agenda: MSNBC,CNN,FOX,and so on have one master: Advertising. Each have a target audience that they aim to get. Fox goes after the conservatives, MSNBC goes after Liberals, and CNN gets the rest.
Cenk is wrong. The WH never said they were going to 'punch back' at Fox. They said they were going to treat them as an organization with a Republican slant, and they noted that other media organizations should do the same to maintain the integrity of their own programming. There is nothing wrong - there isn't even anything remotely controversial with that policy.
I just don't get it. Why is she defending Fox News? Are they paying her or something? The White House has every reason to defend itself since the press obviously has questionable judgement on this issue. Fox intentionally lies to their audience, therefore, they are NOT a news organization. Now, the question becomes "who determines what is truth and what isn't". You know, an independent "truth commission" would be nice... If only it couldn't be corrupted.
Truth can be determined in many things. Climatologists unanimously say Climate Change is real, and overwhelmingly say people are contributing to it. Yet people still won't believe it.
Here is the issue; "someone" needs to step forward to require the truth. No, I don't want government determining "what is news and what isn't", but when a media group is intentionally lying to their audience, "somebody" has to come forward to call them out on it, and if no one else is going to "step up", then yes, I do want my government stepping forward to tell me that I am being lied too. The White House and Pentagon placed the 17 major news organizations in an impossible bind in 2002, saying that, in order to gain access to WH and Pentagon briefings, they had to present Bush's wars according to his directives, not theirs. They all signed on, and sold their collective souls in order to gain access. The announcements of this Bush intimidation should have been all over Page 1, instead the new orgs all rolled over and took it like they were told.

I remember one episode of the Fox show *The Simpsons* that made fun of Fox News. One of the characters was watching Fox News. I don't remember the topic. But I remember crawls that asked things such as "Do Democrats cause cancer?" In effect, the Obama administration announced its policy on Fox News. But I do kind of wish the White House had stayed above it and let the DNC and us grunts do the push back.

Well put, but the fact is that Cenk is right, they do present opinion as fact, and they are liars. They should be forced to come clean about their right wing bias and stop calling themselves fair and balanced, but that would require government intervention in the running of the show - so the cleanest way to deal with the problem is to simply call them what they are and refuse to deal with them. FNC gets huge ratings for the same reason Reality Television shows do. Ms. Mac Nichol basically admits that Fox News has only two journalists working for them. Shepherd Smith and Major Garrett . I don't disagree with that. Smith hosts two hours a day, and most of Garrett's appearances are on Smith's shows, so Fox News presents a little more than two hours of actual news every day.

The ONLY reason Fox enjoys its ratings is because they speak in inflammatory terms (to draw attention to themselves) and because there is no other competing conservative-oriented networks.
CNN and MSNBC seem to lean a little left, so liberals are divided between the two. There is NO moderate conservative network though, so all conservatives have available to watch is Fox.

Fox intentionally lies to their audience, therefore, they are NOT a news organization. Now, the question becomes "who determines what is truth and what isn't". You know, an independent "truth commission" would be nice... If only it couldn't be corrupted.

Here is the issue; "someone" needs to step forward to require the truth. No, I don't want government determining "what is news and what isn't", but when a media group is intentionally lying to their audience, "somebody" has to come forward to call them out on it, and if no one else is going to "step up", then yes, I do want my government stepping forward to tell me that I am being lied too. Now, I will require evidence, but I would listen.

Other than Fox 'n' Friends, America's Newsroom, Neil Cavuto, Brett Baier, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly and Greta van Susteren, Fox News is really on the level. No one would care a fig about Fox if it called itself what it truly is: Fox Republican AgitProp.
It is NOT as if the power of the State was being used against Fox. That would be a constitutional issue; not a political one.

Glynnis MacNichol is totally wrong. The White House and Pentagon placed the 17 major news organizations in an impossible bind in 2002, saying that, in order to gain access to WH and Pentagon briefings, they had to present Bush's wars according to his directives, not theirs. They all signed on, and sold their collective souls in order to gain access. The announcements of this Bush intimidation should have been all over Page 1, instead the new orgs all rolled over and took it like they were told.

Politically I think the whitehouse attacking Fox isnt the right move. its a waste of time, they need to be attacking the blue dogs.
That said there is NO violation of the 1st amendment. the WH kept attacks verbal.
If they sent police officers to arrest Hannity, beck, Murdock and Ayles etc (as much as i would like that) then it would be a violation of the 1st amendment
the WH is free to say whatever they want.

I listened to what Glynnis said and yes I understand what she is saying, but I disagree with her. Lies can get people killed and if it is lies directed at the president and it is misleading people then that person has a right to defend their stance!~ She is taking things a bit to far because Cenk stood str8 and never waived.

I am not sure what she's getting at. Her argument is weak. Maybe in an ideal world the WH could totally stay out of the fray & the media could filter out the propaganda, but then again, maybe rainbow skittles will rain down from the sky tomorrow and we can all live off of them and Chocolate Bunny rabbits forever. Pure fantasy. The WH is just calling Fox out for what it is because nobody else of note will. I think she's cute though, I like when she laughed when Cenk said "Golly gee whillikers."
