No freaking way! I remember watching this in elementary school several times. Whenever the teachers had no lesson plan we watched this movie. All that is needed is the sound of the projector over my shoulder
I remember this film.Watching it in class in the 70's. We are all the way down the southern California tip next to Mexico by the Colorado River, where it ends. This kept me interested in the film to the end. So I'm watching it again.
I watched this in the mid seventies at Chaparral Elementary in Woodland Hills, CA. We would watch this and The Red Balloon once a year. I think the teachers would order it to do planning in the back of the Pod (an open classroom with no walls.) Everyone would cross their fingers that the teacher could thread the film into the projector and it would be watchable and not break. Music teachers showed Peter and the Wolf.
I saw this film in Lamar Elementary school in El Paso Texas when I was in the 2nd, and 3 grade in 1972-73. Man I wanted to be paddle so much and go places. I miss mrs.coldwell, mrs davis. my p.e. coach mr. B, Mr.Payan, Mrs. lafayette, and my 1st puppy love girlfriend Yolanda Chacon. I haven't forgot you never. remember you checked of the yes box. I also remember you injured your ear on the desk. i hope it didnt leave any scaring.
I love, I love, I love THIS video. I remember it from my elementary school days back in the early 1970's. I love it so much, I bought for my son and gave it to his kindergarten class and the school last year.
saw this film in school in the mid 70's- late 70's grade school. so sex ed was the reason huh? what a nerd i was... not to know.hey thanks for posting
Glad to have found this. I have a both my original book which is old and fragile, as well as a newer copy I got from Amazon about 10 years ago. I have made numerous trips from Maryland to Lake Superior and have put in at Bayfield to do multiday Camping in the Apostle Island which Paddle visited, as well as paddling Duluth, the Soo, and the Thousand Island. I go my early interest in Lake Freighters due to that book. First time I ve seen the movie though.
@stevehas This was a mainstay in early 70s Canada. I think we did well with it--written by an American, turned to film by Canadians. A good earthy North American tale we can all love, either side of the border, and beyond!
Cheers to all of our American friends who can also love this, The Great Lakes are great because they exist, and bond us! Flannel all the way! Ha!
Glad to have found this. Been wondering for years what the title was. They used to play this on the last day of school back when I was in pre-school back in '78-'79 in Massachusetts. Has always been a fond memory. Thanks for posting it here.
I'm from Australia and I have such wonderful childhood memries of this at school i think I saw it round 1982 or 83 can't believe i have watched it again after all these years. think we used to watch it to when the older kids were having sex ed as well LOL
I love this film. Saw it as a kid, one of those deals where they herd the kids into the gym for a day of films while the older grades got their sex ed.
I grew up in Tokyo, and this was a film we watched almost every year in elementary school. Thank you for fond memories. I will be sharing this with my friends daughter soon.
Thanks for sharing this. I still have the book from my childhood (it was my father's) in my apartment, and savor it from time to time; now I remember how important the film was to me as well. I ordered the DVD from Criterion thanks to your link.
I have been searching on the internet for this forever, but couldn't remember the name of the film. Finally I asked my aunt who's a grade school teacher, and here I am. I remember seeing this in kindergarten in 1981.
I have been checking on YouTube for this film forever...and finally, I stop looking for about seven months, and it's up there now. Thank you for posting this! They used to trot it out at least once a year when it rained during recess - this and The Red Balloon. I have fond memories of both, and haven't seen Paddle to the Sea for easily twenty-eight years. Thank you for posting it!
This was one of the few films my elementary school, in Central Washington State owned, in the early- to mid-1970's. We often saw this one in the gym if it was too cold for recess or in our classroom if our teacher needed a break.
Noticed that the pike actually nailed the frog. These days, the namby-pamby mush-brains who run so many of our schools would demand that the scene be clipped out, or not allow PaddleToTheSea to be shown at all...
Saw this in Harmony Elementary in Middletown, NJ. Sixth grade.
I watched this at camp as a kid (mid 1970's?). What a great movie, this and Waterwalker. Bill Mason died far too soon - could always use one more movie or book of his!
Fond memories,Yes indeed. Grew up in Haliburton, Ontario in the early 70's as a youngster and remember the teacher's playing this a few times. Classic NFB Film. Wonderful and fresh still after 40 + years.
Do you think 5% of the stuff made today will survive this long ?
Thank you for this! We have recently moved to Nova Scotia, Canada from Arizona and this book was given to my son on his first birthday from a good friend of our from Michigan. He is now 5, and we just finished reading this book. He loved it! Can't wait to share this video with him tomorrow! He will be thrilled!!
It's been many, many m00ns since I've seen this film. I would like to give thanks to the one who posted it and allowed us viewers to re-live this beautiful old film.
WOW FANTASTIC! If you grew up in Canada your teacher played this for you many times.. It just sticks in your head! Another title I remember is "One got Fat" check it out on U-tube as well. It's not Canadian but amazingly wierd.... narrated By Edward Everet Horton!
I watched this at school when I was 8, so over 30 years ago, but if anyone asks me to name a kids TV program for schools tis would be the first thing that springs to mind.
thank you soo much for posting this video, brought back lots of memories from grade school at flory elementory in the 70's!

Proudly growing up on the Great Lakes, this movie was very special to me, and has remained in my heart since.
This was shown to my entire Elementary School when I was in 2nd grade.
I plan on buying this movie and showing to my children who won't know the beauty of living on Lake Ontario.
