This is just my hypothesis but I think Rin's father didn't really wanna kill Ren. But since the last person Rin wants to see before she dies is Ren, her father came up to the idea of killing Ren due poison in a closed prison, for them too see each other again in the other life. So when Rin saw her father smile at her, she already have hints that they can meet again.

I personally think that's Rin's Story is more depressing than Len's...

because Len's was more loud and had a rock-and-roll-esque sense to it, with him being worried about death and it's more direct, while Rin's story is more depressing cause she hides her true feelings under a "mask" of sorts.

Rin's father was also the commander and he knew that Rin was going to die. You see him in one part and he is reading the letter. He tears it up so the guards can put Len in the gas chamber so he could die and live with Rin in heaven. TT^TT I am crying while typing this. *sniff*

sad but, not crying sad to me. O.o anyways. i could see rins dad knew they loved each other and couldn't EXACTLY handle it. when len punched her dad in the face. it made him think and almost cry because rin and len had a strong love for each other, she was about to pass, and he regretted tearing his only happiness of remembrance of his daughter, rin. he had to stay strong (even though he really couldnt) and covered his face sending len to another cell. Thats the really interesting part to me...
