Let me show you : Jeanne Calment, a french woman who died around 121 years old was drinking alcohol and smoking each day. If your question is what could make me believe in the god that christians, muslims or jews believe in, I would say nothing, for one single reason. Their "holy" books are supposed to be kind of word of god, thus absolute truth if their god exists. Means: all falls down when you find one single thing wrong inside. And the fact is that science already showed dozen of things contrarily to what is written in their books.

There are countless exhortations to violence in the Qoran and an extremely large number of followers doing just that. Looking back fifty years, I see that popular kids were those who didn't care what others thought of them, the self contained and cool. They impressed the insecure, who drew strength from their personalities, whose rectitude was beside the point.

I live on a hill in Thailand, where I've been for over ten years. So situated, I am part of no herd, which I think I've never been one of anyway. I've often been a dissident and I lose friends for what I think. And I think your "taxes" angle is the sort of thing Muslims love to spew for demonizing the West, whose expense for being in Iraq and Afghanistan outweights any possible oil benefit. Finally, your herd item keeps me believing you're a Muslim. I’ve said nothing ABOUT the Middle East here.
