  • Hi. If decals won't stick what's the best way to get them to stick thanks.

  • @19harry73 Using some sort of decal solution like Microsol / Microset... or Johnsons Klear / Future / Pledge floor polish, which is my preferred method.. :)

  • hey, love your tutorials, they're great!

Any how, I was wondering if you, or anyone else on youtube, know how to fix my decals? they're always fading and just turn into a white shapeless blob.

    Thanks!

  • @DioStudent What make models do you build mainly, and what do you use for a decal solution, if any??

  • @BasicModelling

I don't use any solutions, but I think it was just that one kit that did it, as I just finished putting decals on two others and they are just amazing. And the decals that didn't work were from airfix.

    Thanks

  • @DioStudent Airix.. that could, and probably will, explain it! Where they on a glossy backing paper??

  • @BasicModelling yeah, like a light blue paper. The molds are from 1979, but I don't know wen mine are from

  • hi basicmodeling cwazmann1 said you do model contests and i was just wondering next time you do one could i enter and are there any rules by the way great videos and very cool tips!!!!

  • @mds13696 Yes, I do.. and yes you can.. there will be rules, but this years contest will be slightly different to the last two.. just keep an eye out, I won't have it just yet foir a while.. still shipping out the prizes from last years contest.. :)

  • i would really like to see a building review of a c-130 or ac-130. keep up the good work. thank you :)

  • @spiderrock2009 I have the Airfix kit somewhere, which I hope to make into a Swedish TP-84 at some point.. :)

  • @BasicModelling that should be nice :)

  • @spiderrock2009 Don't expect it anytime very soon though.. Need o find the kit first, not that I can understand how I could possibly lose a big box like that.. :)

  • @BasicModelling ha its fine. :)

  • Works.

  • @terminator363 Good!

  • @BasicModelling

    One Word Response = Win

  • @terminator363 Yin ton iddle I po!

  • u no those polystirene barrels that u put in the jet

  • @airfix1234 Sorry,, yes, you do need to paint them.. :0)

  • thanks mate ill keep that in mind and do i have to paint those jets like u did u no polystirene thing

  • @airfix1234 Which jets?? :)

  • HELP

im building an m1 abrams, and do u know on the frontal armor there is usualy boxex with a box looking outline.hard to explain. the decals provided are way to contrast to be put on a military tank, especially a dusty m1 abrams. any way to fade the colors away?

  • @shevah2 The only thing you can do is to weather over the decals, after you have applied them.. If the model will be dusty, then just dust over the decals as well.. The method shown in this video only fades the yellow decal film, not the decals themselves..

  • As I want to join the airforce as my father and grandfather both were involved with, my little brother is following my great grandfather's footsteps and wants to join the Navy as a... Radar Operator I never thought that he was so I dunno what to call it. Mabye he'll see me zooming across the ocean to help our navy in combat...

  • @MilitaryAircraft101 Whatever you want to do, pursue it to the best of your ability.. :)

  • At 0:38, what is the kit with the Roumanian air force decals?

    Thanks.

  • @whikless That is the Heller 1/72 Arado 196 kit... a nice little floatplane.. :)

  • @BasicModelling Thankyou for telling me that :)

Do you know of any other WWII Roumanian models??

  • @whikless 'A Model' has made a few different versions of the IAP-80 fighter, and very nice kits they are too.. I recommend you check out my 'Inbox review' of the IAR-80 A... :) It's not uncommon for some kits of German planes to include decals for Romanian versions as well..

  • @BasicModelling Ah, my favourite aircraft. Thanks for the recommendation. :)

  • @whikless I will definetely build the IAP.. Just not sure when! :)

  • Wicked idea - now i have a good reason to buy ancient kits!!!! Wouldn't like to see what would happen if the window wasn't condensation free. Probably a big blob of gunk on the floor by the time you got back from Hawaii!

  • @2002And Well, yes.. a condensation free window is a must.. or you will end up with a window full of RAF roundels and German Balkenkreuz.. :)

  • @BasicModelling TOO RIGHT!!

  • @2002And Mind you, that could be quite decorative.. :)

  • @BasicModelling Hey maybe we should put it on the market as a piece of 'accidentally brilliant artwork'!

  • @2002And Ha ha ha ha.. I reckon it'll sell well.. :)

  • hi its me again..

im on a mustang now and its going to be the first time i use metallic paint.

    any tecniques needed ?

    thankyou

  • A soft brush, prferrably flat.. and most likely 2 or 3 thin coats, depending on what paint you are using.. :) :) If it is Revell just be aware it dries quite quickly.. :)

  • ive got some model filler erm... how to use it???? you got any tips? cheers

  • Yes, best way to use it is to apply it with some sort of spatula.. make sure it is properly dry before sanding, don't do too much, it's better to add some more if you still have a dent or a gap after the first lot.. and sand it down gently with some fine grade wet'n'dry sandpaper.. :)

  • Put the decal sheet in a sunny window.... In England? LOL

Thanks for the tip, I can confirm it works fine!

  • I know.. I know.. it just takes longer! But thanks for the confirmation.. :) :)

  • NIce! It Does work, bubt it takes a while. Did you find this out yourself?

  • Glad you found it works.. and no, somebody in my club told me, that's why I like belonging to a club, because you learn so much just by listening to other peoples experiences.. :)

  • oh :) I was gonna say... coz i could never find the patience to work it out myself :]

  • Some things I thought I had come across myslef turned out to be common knowledge.. :) But most of my 'skills' I have picked up from other people.. that is the quickest way! But I like to share what I know and help other modellers when and if I can.. :)

  • {:-]

  • this helps a lot because my 190s decals were almost yellow in color, it just took me a day to fade them to white

  • Excellent.. some do work quicker than others.. :)

  • Yesterday, I tried declling an instrument panel for my Ju-52, but the decal fell apart...:( I hope this will save my decals!

  • Giveit a go.. but some decals can be very brittle, and this is more a mean of removing the yellowness of old decals.. What you can do, however, is to give your decals a thin coat of a clear non-waterbased gloss varnish, on the sheet.. make usre it dries properly! That will hopefully keep the decals together... just make sure only to coat the decal though, and not too much of the paper around it, as it may have trouble coming off the sheet when dipped in water.. Above all, GO CAREFULLY!! :)

  • I've tried this several times and it always works!

  • Absolutely... :) I was worried the sun would make the decals brittle, but that seems not to be the case.. if they should be brittle, that would have happened anyway.. :)

  • Great tip!

  • It's a tip-top tip.. :)

  • To me the yellow of the rumanian crosses looked quite ok^^^... The last time I had swasticas on the sheets must be 30 years ago..

  • Mein Herr is pulling ze leg.. :)

As for 30 years ago, that could well be true, as the decal sheet shown in this video (Heller Arado 196) is at least that old... :) It still baffles me that swasticas are banned from decal sheets overall, as it has nothing to do with the politics, but everything to do with building an accurate model.. I didn't include a set for your Me 262 though, as I wasn't sure what the law says and did not want you (or me) to get into trouble.. :)

  • Actually I was not joking (perhaps on the rumanian crosses)... in germany it IS a matter of politics and laws. Since 1945 swasticas are only allowed in a context with science, art, education, or history. Sometime in the '70s a judge decided that models don't fit in any category.Nowadays you won't even get the finnish roundels! Even in some of by warplane books the german planes do not wear swastikas.

  • I remember in one of my modelling magazines.. or was it an aeroplane magazine?, they made a BIG thing about a museum in Berlin allowing swasticas on their planes.. I think it was a Me 163 or something! That was a while ago.. Models depicting a historical aircraft surely should be exempt from the rule, but obviously not.. :) Over here there's no problem putting swasticas on the models, luckily..

  • How cool is that?!?!? Pretty neat tip!!

  • It works well, I've just had the decals from an old AH-1 TOW COBRA kit stuck in the window for a couple of weeks.. they're as good as new!!! :)

  • No risk of that happening.. she counts herself as a YT Widow, and will have NOTHING to do with it.. :)

  • That's why I always goes to town on a Friday morning, so I'm back before 'the leader of the opposition' comes home! (What she does not know, won't harm her! Unless she goes up in the loft...)

  • Great tip! Just simply the power of the sun is all it needs. Now I don't have to scratch my head with my old decals. Thanks a million.:)

  • It does work a treat.. obviously the time span various with each individual decal sheet, depending on age and degree of yellowing.. you just have to leave them until you're happy with their appearance.. :)

  • There are modellers out there who build on order, yes.. :) But done properly they'll probably charge you a fair bit.. Personally I don't build to order*, as I can live with my own mistakes and paintblobs, but would not like to do that on somebody elses model!

There is also the option of kits that are pre-painted and just need some basic assembly done to them.. should be available in most toy.. erh, I mean hobby shops.. :)

    * = except for an upcoming family birthday..

  • It is sunny but oh so cold today in coventry.

  • De cal vu?

  • You're so bright you won't need a window.. :)

  • Yes, that's in the UK. Here in Florida it would catch on fire. lol. Kidding. Yep, good tip! Thanks.

  • Well, it'll probably go quicker than a week or two anyways.. :)

  • haha awsome

  • ..and totally free of charge!! :) That is the best bit.. :)

  • hehe

i just came back from the model expo and took 41 pics its on my modelling4Life account

  • I'll check it out later.. :)

  • very clever rob,if it sunny do they get a tan, love and respect scotty and libby:0)

  • ..only if it is painted in desert camouflage... :) :)

  • popeye,lol

  • That's the nose art of a Handley Page Hampden.. I won't use those decals on the model, by the way, as it will be built as a Swedish Hampden.. they only had one, but it was the longest serving Hampden in the world.. :)

  • Don't get your Hampden Court.

  • who will be surprised of that? The swedes had no other choice but to keep the planes they had.. as their own industry was just tooling up, and the Saab 18 entered service a bit late

  • Keep watching.. you're soon get the hang of it!! :)

  • ..andn it's free too! All it takes is some time.. :) But it definetely works.. :)

  • The way to fade the decal is to stick it in the window, as shown.. :) The sun does the work for you, for free.. :) I know some people like to scan and reprint their decals, but I haven't access to such technology, so I let nature do the job.. takes a bit longer, but by the time you've built the model the decals should be ready anyway,... :) As long as the sun shines.. :)

  • nice help thanks

  • It's definetely worth trying.. :)

  • Good tip but I might freak out if I looked over at my neighbor's house and saw a swastika in the window! :P

  • Yes.. well.. swastikas tend not come with the decals these days, you have to buy them separate.. :) But it only goes to show the decals are old.. personally I would not build any German WWII plane without them, as they would be incomplete, and historically incorrect.. :)

  • I doubt it works in the UK...last time we were there, the newspapers would declare the weather in terms such as 'sunny spells' so you'd have to decal your windows for six months or so :)

  • We do have the sun from time to time, and have had very little rain so far this spring.. :) A couple of weeks should be enough, but obviously you can add or deduct time as you see fit.. :) :)

  • it's basically a nice idea, basically :) and you telling ppl it's free! what are you a socialist? :)

  • Ha ha ha ha ha... I would make a lousy business man.. :)

  • You should copyright the idea in the UK and then sell licenses to use the sun lol :)

then you could stay a few nights in the fab hotels in Dubai :)

  • Ahh.. Sweet!

I even recognized that outside area from another video ;)

And swastikas on a kit supplied decalsheet.. That got to be old! :)

And about buying old kits.. I like that too, but I also like brand new ones =D

But really... Awsome tip! Thanks alot! I "hope" I will have use for it soon!

  • I like ANY kit.. but sometimes if you want a certain kit, you can only buy old stuff, as they just aren't made any more.. it should work for any decals, even armour.. :) :)

Glad you found the tip useful... :)

  • How about the other way around? apply and place the model in the sun. I hear models like the sun. ;^)

  • Somehow I think they will find the idea of being covered in British 'target markers' and German balken creuzes somewhat offputting.. :) Models (of the plastic variety at least) are best kept out the sun when made.. :)

  • Yum!

  • neat-o i sent a friend of mine to this channel, he is just getting back into modeling from a 20 some odd year hiatus. he put one together and was disheartened by the fit of the pieces. as a child he did not give a rats rump if it was not a perfect fit. i told him that you do all sorts of tweaking to get yours spot on. he was very excited about it.

maybe now he will not pick on me for spending so much time on y.t.

    ;)

    xoexo

  • Excellent.. :) You're very lucky to come a cross a kit with a perfect fit.. but if you do, you normally pay a lot of money for it.. :) I rather go cheap and enjoy the chalklenge.. :)

  • Peas, man.. peas!!

  • That is an excellent idea! leave it to you to come up with it!!!

  • Just forwarding what I pick up from others.. :) The hobby is good in that way, we all share and help each other.. :)

  • That's one of many benefits from belonging to a Modelling Club! You get to share other modellers discoveries, trials and tribulations.. and as I count YouTube as my second Modelling Club these days, I'm only too happy to forward and share whatever useful knowledge I pick up.. :)
