  • The tragic bird scene was and is profound. Reminds just how stupid we can all be in a group and to try to see the big picture soon as something doesn't seem right, to remember about what we care about.. Its hard

  • Lovely upload !

  • I watched this movie in the 70's and loved it. Thanks for posting this now I will look for the DVD.

  • I just went through Vevay, IN today and remembered that there had been a movie made there years ago (I live about 50 miles away in south central IN). I yahooed and got this. Wow...it is beautiful...thank you so much for posting! I always loved Lee Remick also.

  • The bathtub scene is described very well in the book.

  • The scene in the classroom, Sooner was the prettiest girl in her class!

  • How could anyone not love this beautiful, precious little girl!

  • I love Sooner very much !!

    .

  • @megajanya

    I love her too.

  • My folks took me and my sister to Vivi Indiana to see some of the filming, and we went back to see the Movie preveiw at the high school.

  • ***I'm uploading the entire movie on youtube***

  • @SofRegina The original? I have a number of kids I borrow who need to see this! They have no idea just how blessed they are! AND you have just become my next best friend and your name is now rising to the top of my hero list!!!!! CAN'T Wait!!!!! So excited! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I get this movie confused some film with Cicely Tyson in it. It came out the same year. I do remember the bird dying scene. Sad. Wish someone would post the entire film up.

  • @robbiesyohn I always did too. The movie with Cicely Tyson was called Sounder...about a dog. It was another heartfelt movie also.

  • This was a great movie.

  • I loved this movie that little girl needed so much love. I wish this movie would come on TV again. Lee Remick was such a beautiful lady, she died too soon. And that little girl I think her name was Susan Deer, was such a pretty little girl. She looks just like my cousin Summer when she was little. Did Cloris Leachman win the Emmy for playing Old Mam?

  • @Sheri451

    No she didn't

  • One of the saddest scenes ever was when her 'friends' accidently killed Bird and how Lee Remick finally realized what it takes to truly love I'm a guy and that scene still rips me up.

  • I remember this tv movie very well.

  • When I watched this movie I was tempted to want to throw Sooner's Grandmother off a VERY VERY HIGH bridge.

It is shocking to see the evil that lurks within the Human Heart and how people can be so abusive of an innocent girl.

We will be judged in this life on how we treat children and the helpless.

  • I will never forget watching this movie when I was a child 35+ years ago. My mom and I sat in a big old over stuffed chair all cuddled up and cried, cried, cried!! I have looked for it over the years but have never found it. Does anyone know where I might purchase a copy of it????

  • Wow-you have to love this technological age to be able to find a movie you forgot the name of, but never forgot the movie! The bird part was something I have thought of all these years and would still get upset about thinking about it today. I often wondered about this movie that I had seen so many years ago..then one day I said to myself look it up on the internet and I found it!! Glad all of you feel the same way about it as me-the clip brought me to tears.

  • I was near Sooner's age & cried so hard realizing that Sooner had never really known love. When Sooner caresses "Elizabeth's face, her longing 4 a child is evident but she catches herself & pulls back from Sooner's touch (broke my heart). They needed 1 another so much 2 B able 2 heal each other. Sadly because of all the pedophiles, this sweetly poignant scene of the beginning of the bond between 2 vulnerable people will never B released as it was originally. 2nd fav scene: Doing the dishes!

  • 2 parter: I bought a (probably pirate) DVD & yeah the bath scene's gone along w/ any 4 letter word. That bugged me. When I saw it the 1st time, that was the scene that made me think,"What could that kid have done 2 get beaten like that". When I saw her w/o her clothes, along w/ "Elizabeth's" expression @ the abuse Sooner suffered made the pain Sooner endured became real. The other thing about the bath scene was how gentle Elisabeth was w/ Sooner, a kindness that Sooner rarely felt. (C pt. 2)

  • @fairygodmotherKr15 I got a copy off the internet and it was just like when I saw it on tv with commercials and everything. I was named after this book.

  • @sooner122775 O.K. I MUST know... where'd U find it? (Obviously there's a few others who'd like 2 know 2 according 2 the messages left here.) My chop-copy is pathetic. Not only missing the tub, scene but most of the bird scene 2. Now I'm hoping U can help me get through the w/drawal that hit me even harder after I bought what's most probably a pirate copy. Sorry about all the "Comment removed" stuff. No clue Y it didn't post. How cool 2 B named after the character!

  • @fairygodmotherKr15 I don't recall the exact site anymore but it was was a copy that was aired on tv and had commercial and everything. The quality was not so great but you could hear it all. If I think of there I got it I'll get back to you. And yes, growing up a different with my name but I've met a few online in the last 2 years. There are two of us in Wisconsin.

  • Character actor Richard Crenna played"Mac"the animal doctor and husband to Ms.Remick's"Elizabeth"in this tv movie drama. Mr.Cloris Leachman played the mean old B-!" "Old Mam".Who owned poor "Sooner" and treated her like a slave.

  • There was a scene in this tv movie drama..where Ms,Remick's 'Elizabeth"removes "Ms.Sooner's"Ms.Deer's dress..prior to putting her into the bathtub. And the little kid is nude under her dress. That is something that you will not see on tv these days.

  • To: erinout I meant to reply specifically to your comment. Sorry I didn't specify!

    Thanks!

  • I love this movie. What a beautifully brief breakdown...I too appreciate the lack of the bird scene...that was so awful. What I loved was Sooner and Elizabeth's relationship...oh, and I liked Mac too!

  • Beautiful, heartwarming and heart breaking movie. I remember watching this movie when i had to stay home from school because i was sick. I was 10, 34 years ago and just watching this clip brought tears to my eyes. Thanks so much!

  • Yeah I rember this movie and the bird.....I cryed for days and I would again to see it now.

  • Thank you so much for posting this!

And thank you for not including the scene with the bird... that upset me so much as a child!

  • Susan was my best friend in elementary school she was quite shy and the fame that this movie bought to her was a bit overwhelming. Her parents wouldn't allow anymore movie making after this one and it is a bit sad because she was a very good actress. She lives in England now, Married with kids.

  • Have you any idea why the film was never released on video or DVD? It's so sweet and charming that I wonder if there's some copyright issues getting in the way.

  • Lee Remick is my idol too. I'm totally in love with her even though she didn't get the parts she sooo deserved. She was such a beautiful, gracious woman.

  • This TV movie is so special. When I watch this movie I am sad, very sad for a couple of days and then I have to wait a few more months to watch it again. It's so emotional for me and Susan Deer played her part so well. I am sure that this story was real somewhere out there of a young girl growing up in a proverty stricken home during the depression. But luckily in this story Sooner's life turned around when she met Mac and Elizabeth. A very good ending.

  • You can get the video if you visit Vevay, Indiana -

  • i was named sooner after this movie. :) oh what a joy! it's a good thing i have the persona to match my name. i love it-wouldn't change it for the world!

  • What a wonderful, wonderful video! I watched the movie on TV when I was expecting my 1st child. Still makes me cry! Thank you!

  • Great video you put together. I have been waiting for years for this movie to come out on dvd. I did google it and cant believe that its actually there. I cant wait to watch it again.

  • My cousin Sue played Sooner...what a hoot to stumble on this on the web. Really takes me back to the summer of that shoot in Vevay, IN. I remember being facinated with the make-up people putting on all those scrapes, etc. while we were playing with our Barbies! And the birds! Little did I know my future husband was there at his grandma's house all summer hanging around and watching filming. BTW, Sue lives in Australia with her wonderful husband and son.

  • Thank you for sharing the info on Sue...I just love this movie!

  • Thank you Sofi! You did SUCH a good job on this! Thank you for uploading this, and rekindling the heart warming, yet bitter-sweet memories this movies evokes! I saw this as a young girl, and still remember crying in bed that summer night! I wanted MY family to take her in and for her to be my sister!! I could barely emotionally separate the story from reality. Her life broke my heart, and I KNOW it affected my appreciation for MY life much more after watching it... thanks again!

  • i saw this movie when it came out. i was about 10 years old. loved it except for the bird part. i hated that part. stuck with me for a while.

  • I remember this show. Thanks for uploading it. I saw myself in her somehow,... now that I see it again,... I still do. I used to befriend pigeons, squirrels, roaches, fruit flies, and chipmunks and was quite isolated with Insomnia.

  • It is available on DVD. Just Google the title.

  • I have the book and really want to see this movie! Looks great! Good work! The little girl looks like my sister when she was little.

  • Thanks Sofi!

  • i will call my daughter lee,as lee remick

    i adore her

  • is there any site out there to watch this movie.i remember it from when i was a kid.the bird seen always stuck with me thinking of this movie.

  • The bird was heartbreaking & also Cloris Leachman's (as Sooner's cruel grandmother) treatment of the horse. It's a moving film, but if you're an animal lover, be warned before you watch it.

  • The late Great Film Composer Jerry Goldsmith wrote the beautiful music.

  • I really want to watch this movie.

  • A wonderful family drama starring

    two wonderful talents:Ms.Remick and

    Mr.Crenna.

You don't get performers like this

    anymore!

  • I want to see this movie soo bad, a friend of mine sent me a autographed copy of the paperback a few yrs ago , the book is amazing, I read it as a child

  • Wow!! Thankyou so much for posting this. I picked this book out of a giveaway box at a local grammar school a year ago and just started reading it a couple of weeks ago. Well, you've stoked my curiosity so I'm going to keep on reading it and hope it does come out on DVD. Thankyou again for assembling and posting this.

  • this is beautiful and it made me cry!
