  • scott,go back and look up the original barbell hack squat.bar behind the body on the floor.circa 1940-50.

  • this just looks dangerous, i can see someone doing this, losing grip on their feet, sliding forward and the bar coming down on them- just do a regular squat or use a hack machine if there is one, this is just bs

  • jesus this looks bad bad BAD technique, and im here to learn-i just know this is bad

  • wtf

  • dick dick dick idk idk idk kid kid kid dick dick cock kcoc cock kcoc

  • uhhhhh thats not a hack squat.......I'm pretty sure a hack squat is when the straight bar is on the ground and you pick up the bar from behind your back.....

  • You are a fucking idiot.

  • put on a shirt man!

  • This is just bad X_X I'm no great instructor here but even I could proberly do better.

  • how about you just use a hack squat machine

  • this is a complete joke just like all your videos and training tips

  • scott is a complete dumbass and secondly to people who listen to his bullshit why do you take advice from a guy who obviously has not muscle at all.

  • @MrScdpp u obviously know jack shit. stop hatin. scotts abnormally strong for his weight class

  • how to smith machine squat: DONT. the only thing the smith is good for is to put your sweater on when you get hot

  • don't mean to be a hater i really don't....but if i showed someone this id be fired...or if i was doing private training it could seriously harm someone....not to mention other gym guys/girls and trainers would just stare at you like this o.O....my uncle use to rave on about this guy..now he's sidelined with all kinds of muscular and joint problems, went from deadlifting to not even being able to pick up a 10kg weight without it hurting...is there a link?..from seeing this i highly assume so. :\

  • Haters gonna hate, i bet most of y'all are just sitting home all day long on your @ss

  • Sorry, but real men do real squats. Smith machines are not only useless, they're dangerous. They limit your range of motion and when you use the smith machine you're not working your stabilizing muscles.

  • @saulhudson420 how else are u meant to do hack squats? hack squats are great to supplement any type of barbell squats to target ur glutes and hams more directly

  • went from decent video maker to complete shit

and put on a shirt. your not ripped

  • retarded

  • ...might add....nice dangerous method being taught there

  • fucking small chested poser. mmm..ok

  • I personally think that his foot position in this video is off. They seem to be to far out in front of him. You should do this variation the exact same way that you would do a regular barbell squat. The only difference is that you are doing it on a machine.

  • I was waiting for his vertebrae to fly across the gym.

  • thumbs up and dont try this today

    it is so danderous

  • Informative video as always

  • For all those doubters the sissy squat is an old technique. Its much safer that conventional squat. The "sissy squat" was actually use exclusively by Vince Girnoda. If anyone hasnt heard of him, maybe you hear of the people he used to train with the Sissy squat. Larry Scott,Steve Reeves, Big Lou Farrigno, Franco Columbo, and some guy named Arnold.

  • This guy snorts Zoloft!

  • lol sorry Scott but that workout kinda suck

  • great video buddy

  • THe smith machine is the single worst piece of fitness equipemnt ever created...If you want to injure your knees, then go right ahead

It is in a fixed plane of motion, meaning that you are inhibiting use of stabilizing muscles. You just cannot naturally do a smith squat, it will force you to its fixed plane. If you look at a free weight squat, the bar does not go in a straight line. It slightly moves.

  • God damn it scott. just god damn it. Another video of BS workouts and horrible methods.

  • umm can someone explain to me how to thin your butt(a lot) but also still maintain a squat thats fairly heavy?

  • Comment removed

  • i aint taking advice from a guy with chicken legs for leg training lol

  • @kcirross I thought exactly the same thing!

  • Trying to get chicks with these videos huh?!

  • Why no shirt always in your videos? That's fucked up. You're annoying.

  • his left leg is way bigger than his right one, interesting

  • @sluvington

    cause no body's perfect

  • that looked um like a text book smithy hacksquat if there ever was such a thing

  • i thought for sure a hack squat was where you stand in front of the bar squat down and pull the bar up, then squat down with the weight. basically a reverse deadlift even the other videos have it shown like the way i described, this is just a smith machine squat.

  • Dude really doesn't have a very impressive body. Even when taking into account that he's definitely natural. meh...

  • Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler, Dexter Jackson, Markus Ruhl, ALL USE SMITH MACHINES. You stupid fucking haters. It's a great machine to build quality muscle!

  • @DeusUniversa10 not for squats imo

  • can i ask a question, and if you read this and can answer, then answer :). Ok ive been getting my upper body bigger, but want to keep my lower body toned, but not big at all. As i enjoy wearing fitted jeans and that. Can i still so squats, but with just my body weight, or maybe a small weight, or will my legs still get big, HELP

  • everybody search 'luimarco squats' to laugh

  • If i saw someone doing this at the gym, I would kick the fuck outta him in the balls.

  • Please don't call this squat....It is utter blasphemy.

  • actually pointless use a hack squat machine it's alot more effective

  • i had to learn the hard way that smith machines are bad for your back :(

  • Squatting in a smith machine is pointless. If you truly want to reap the benefits of squatting, do it from a rack.

  • I Dont like squatting in the Smith Machine!!! It's bad for the back

  • squats on the smith machine is the worse cause the straight movement of the bar fights the natural mechanics of the body and could hurt ur knees and back

  • @ScottHermanFitness what do you think of p90x . is it a good way to lose weight for a at home work out. also i have hit a platue where i stopped losing weight but i don't gain either .so if you could give me some tips and advice on how to get past my platue .

please message back thanks keep up the vids

  • @dmx1650 If you want to gain muscle mass and strength, you should do squats, dead lifts and bench press. Those are the 3 most important lifts (unless you talk to an olympic style weightlifter, who would say the clean & jerk and the snatch, but those are very technical lifts that usually require special plates and coaching to perform safely). After you squat, bench and dead you should do military/shoulder press, chin/pull ups, barbell rows and farmer's carries (not all in one day). These help me!

  • @Jefemuzki Good advise right here, a lot of big mistakes I see a lot of beginner lifters making is starting with isolation excersizes, those work for the advanced lifter who already has gained overall body mass and strength, but not for somebody just starting out, people have to look at the big picture then the little details :). Compound excersizes such as the Squat, Deadlift, Overhead Press, Barbell Rows Pull/Chin ups, are all amazing for building mass, people need to focus on deadlift & squat

  • @Jefemuzki *comment continued* people really need to focus more on increasing their Squats and Deadlifts if they want to gain any signifigant size and avoid plateaus in a matter of months :) all the excersizes you recommended are great! Best advise ive seen on youtube all day, thank you for your comment :).

  • @ThisWeedIsMine4 I know a lot of YouTube people are haters, it's refreshing to have a positive exchange! I have recently added in good old fashioned, government issue Sit-Ups. Do this a few times a week, and all of a sudden, your core feels a lot better. If you hate abs, and don't want to do tons of movements, plain ol' Sit-Ups really end up all of your abdominal muscles, including obliques and hip flexors. These have even helped me get away from using a belt when squatting. Take care.

  • I agree with shutupandsquat007.......this is not a hack squat, and this guy is a total poser!!!!!

  • Yo for all you troglidytes who say you shouldn't use a smith machine to squat and that this isn't a hack squat, suck my ass cheek, cos your wrong twice. So two ass cheek sucks actually! =D

  • put on a shirt sissy boy and if your going to teach a squat next time mention abdominal pressure, back arch, foot width, upper back tightness, proper breathing technique, and hip drive or better yet, just set whoever your teaching up for failure instead, at least telling them from the start is honest.

  • @xRicke6 Well you sound like an pretentious asshole. Why don't you make a video to show everyone since you know a lot more than Scott

  • ok first off you get stronger in the range of motion you train in, so would you rather squat 400lbs from your knees or your heels? train in FULL range of motion. Ever other person says they "workout" or loves to "squat" but i guarantee 90% of the people on here who preach about atg squats and squat depth dont even squat above 300lbs or twice their body weight. Hell i doubt most of you could even survive a true 20rep squat program let alone even know what that is.

  • Hahaha fail!

  • u can do it with on wight if this heavy 4 u dont be shy loool

    why im here??

  • everytime i watch your videos i can't stop staring at your body. i love you scott :)

  • never use the smith machines !

  • All these fucking negative pricks dissing the collective group of aspiring teen bodybuilders upon the shit ass training from a select group of teens not doing it right need to fucking know they arent gonna hit it perfect first time, trial and error and if your so bothered about them doing bad form or not training legs, go and fucking help them train legs if they are as shit at training as being made out to be, dont rant about it on youtube, show these people what they need to be shown.

  • @UrAJeW14 Okay see your point about young folks. Let me re-phrase this for the record. I mean to see just about 90% of all people generally hate to train legs. I will enlarge this group to include all types of people. Didn't mean to not include the rest of the lazy ass public.

  • @UrAJeW14

Even if I did patiently attempt to help them. do you honestly think they would adhere to a system of high intensity low set 6 rep workouts? I have attempted to help a few people and most eventually either give up or go back to their low intensity socializing workouts. They cant handle workouts that adhere to no socializing and busting ass philosophy. Maybe about 5% out their would keep the faith most no way on hell.

  • @bslow21 Good point well made, i didnt know we meant non serious lifters, it just seems like all teens are being labelled wrongly because of these tools coming to the gym to pick up women or do workouts that arent worth doing and doing everything wrong, but at least you have tried and im sure seein effort wasted like that would make you just want to concentrate on your own work and let them do whatever seeing as they are not serious about the sport there is no point tryin to be serious with them

  • Al these haters going on an on about free weight squats. I am curious how many of the typical so called young gym member even train legs. I am around allot of them and most couldn't train legs if I put a stick of TNT up the arse. They all wear these baggy little shorts and either go half way down barley getting any reps or use no weight at all. I rarely see anyone that can put a good 5 wheels a side on, go down and get a good set of 6 - 10 reps. Most people hate training legs.

  • I can see people's point about fitness models not being as concerned about leg size but remember without the old school trains of thought, this new fitness fad wouldn't even exist. Now as far as his form. I agree he is putting his legs way way to far forward this is unbelievably dangerous. Way to much stress on the knee joints. He needs to back up a little and get under the weight. I agree this is not a hack squat machine, he needs to do more of a squatting motion

  • Why do you do everything in a smith machine Scott? I don't get it? FREE WEIGHTS!

  • @WayOfTheBastard

I am getting a kick out of all these so called free weight squatters posts. I have been to dozens of gyms and I rarely see anyone squatting worth a damn anyway. Most guys are so in love with bench pressing they rarely squat anyway. I squat in the smith because I don't trust most of the people to spot me anyway. Ide say most gyms have maybe a very small handful of people who squat or train legs heavily anyway.

  • @WayOfTheBastard

How big are your legs? Get in a Smith put about 5 wheels a side on their, go below parallel, get over 6 reps and go to damn near failure. Also you dont need a cheering section to do this. Leave the ego at the door. I have found allot of young squatters suck. They barley go below parralel and get crap reps. I love to challenge guys half my age to hit legs with me. Its hilarious. They cry "your bigger then me" boo hoo, I started out small years ago. its the intensity that matters

  • @bslow21 I go ass to the ground. I squat 225 for reps now, but I've only been lifting for 9 months. I am not worried about size, but strength. You'll never get good squat numbers working in a smith machine, because the machine does half the work for you.

  • @WayOfTheBastard

I am so sick of hearing about the "I have only been training for x number of months, blah blah blah. " If numbers are your only concern then you are either ate up into power lifting or don't give two figs about training high intensity style. I have noticed most so called barbell squatters never even come close to failure and most have little skinny ass thighs anyway. I train for mass not just some bs weight number. Unless you have someone hugging you is failure possible?

  • @bslow21

I have seen maybe a very small handful of free weight squatters actually get mass out of this movement. But this group is very small. If you are about 5feet 7 inches and below then I say full steam ahead. AKA Tom Platz. Its not the issue of squatting free bar or smith its the matter that one trains legs high intensity and organized at all is the real issue. I could careless if you do nothing but leg extension as long as you bust ass, that's what I am talking about.

  • @WayOfTheBastard

Power lifting is a bunch of nonsense anyway. If you lke that obscure sport more power to you. Be prepared for arthritis, tendonitis and severe injuries in your future if you must go super heavy for the most ridiculous thing which is the pursuit of one rep. One rep does nothing but stroke the ego and hurt people. It doesn't build anything but eventual injuries. Stick to sets of 6 plus reps. You gotta have mass to get mass.

  • @bslow21 My general rule of thumb for me is to do 5 sets of 5 reps for squats and deadlifts and overhead press :) and 1 set of 5 reps on deadlift as much as i can lift for upping my weight for deadlifting and overall body mass 1 rep has a huge chance of injuring you I agree, but once in ahwile it can be good to push your body aslong as you use proper form. but I generally only do 1 rep with deadlifts or squats just to see how much progress I am actually making with strength gains.

  • @bslow21 Oops i meant 1 set x5 reps for deadlifts my bad. not 5x5

  • @WayOfTheBastard

You say ass to the ground. Why do you need to go that deep for? Are you 5feet 7 inches tall with midget legs? Ive say go as low as comfortable. I go pretty darn low myself, where my ankles are sniffing my ass. But to the ground? Once you get to about a couple inches below parallel unless your super short all your using is your lower back. Train where you body tells you to go not some dumb ass rumor , most pros barley hit parallel in person.

  • @bslow21 I don't literally mean to the ground, but as low as you can go with out arching.

  • pussy with chicken legs

  • the worst thing is to get your hands in place and have to turn it to unlock it

  • pussy machine for wimps train hard or go home, people should only use this if they are disabled your not disabled so go home.

  • haha look at all the negative comments, god you people are so ignorant.

  • Wear a shirt, please.

  • Is this the guy from real world Boston?

  • why the fuck are you half naked?

  • isn't a hack squat you squat down and have the bar behind you than bring the bar up the back of your legs?

  • is that 4 butt

  • 33 people think this isn't a hack squat...

  • why are you all saying this isn't a hack squat??

  • he has nice traps

  • The title should be: "How to be a homo who's afraid to put a bar on his back, and takes his shirt off to make a squat video"!

Seriously! What kinda butt pirate do you have to be to take your shirt off for a fucking SQUAT VIDEO?!?!

I have some advice for you... Grow a pair of balls, then put a BAR on your back and squat. Oh, wait, you probably couldn't squat your way out of a wet paper bag with those chicken legs!

  • @PaulNeuhaus haha its not all about size dude. This guy is a fitness model for a living, so I'm sure he could care less about what some amateur thinks. Fitness and bodybuilding is about variety and changing up exercises. You don't always need the barbell on your back...

  • @belvederepunk I didn't say he should care what I think. I'm just stating a fact. Now, go back to huggin his nuts.

  • The only good use a smith machine could have is to be melted down to make more bars and plates.

  • Haha that is the funniest thing I have read on youtube! It's so true! I can see you there heating the forge to make some real heavy weigths!

  • @jecnunez HAHAHA :DD

  • @jecnunez Good luck doing hack squats without a Smithy...

  • @ionuser what are you talking about? hack squats are primal with just a barbell.

  • This is not a hacky squat but definitely a good exercise and I think this guy has a good body and good legs...

  • Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this isn't a hack squat.

  • one word for hack variation "lower!"

  • I generally refrain from being a 'hater' and almost never comment on videos but Scott Herman is an idiot. I'm astounded he has sponsors for these videos. You will hurt yourself training like this and as everyone else has said, these aren't hack squats. I hope the sponsors drop you.

  • these are not hack squats dumbass

  • Why are you even using a smith machine in place of showing correct form for a true free weight barbell hack squat? The machine is doing half the form for you. also this is not a hack squat either. This is Bicep boy stuff

  • dude, why don't you have a shirt on??

  • this is not a hack squat genius

  • this is not a hack squat genius

  • This is almost the same as the sissy squat, good for developing the under worked quad muscles that most of the exercises don't target as much.

  • any exercise i do with the smith machine feels very awkward..

  • this guy only makes these videos so he can have his shirt off during his instructional videos.

  • No reason to not have a shirt on here

  • I've seen bigger legs on a flamingo...

  • Whats ur waist size?

  • not a hack squat pal

  • bro great vids but you really need to learn how to workout legs and squat heavy ATG (no smith, no hack, no BS nonsense)

  • Regular freeweight squats in the rack would be a far safer alternative for most trainees.

  • Its close enough to a hack squat , look at the muscles being used. This guy is fun to watch and very enthusiastic . He looks fine to me. Keep up the good work bro, forget about the haters.

  • smith machines are great for squats better for control and if u wanna go lower.

  • I'm going to try this out next workout

  • why is your shirt off...

  • how much do you squat in your workout if you go heavy?

  • David Henry does smith machine squats and he won the Mr. Olympia 202.... Ronnie Coleman does smith squats too.... I'm tired of everyone giving smith machines a bad rep, when they ACTUALLY increase strength and muscle just as much as free weights do. Quit opening your mouths you skinny fucking keyboard warriors.

  • @DeusUniversa10

    I agree Deus

  • @DeusUniversa10 Excellent point, if the pros use smith machines they are obviously useful in certain situations. These motherfuckers hating on smith machines are pretentious assholes who think they've got it all figured out. There is NEVER just one way when it comes to fitness, The Hodge twins are big dudes and they never squat. Fucking Youtube comments, Ha!

  • dosen't he own a shirt?

  • why is his shirt off?

  • dude its not a leg press.

use your glutes and hips to squat properly.

and get off the smith machine

also stop training people if you are because that is not a hack squat

  • put a shirt on you faggot. and stick to giving advice on things you actually know something about--like sucking dicks.

  • @rubenshitcock this sounds like pure jealously. You're probably an out of shape guy who can't be bothered to workout. Stop hating.

  • hey scott, I do squats on a smith machine, is there a significant difference doing squats on a smith machine than doing them with the normal bench bar?

  • who is going to take squat advice from a dude with toothpicks for wheels hahahah

  • a) dont squat in a smith machine

    b) this isnt a hack squat

  • @ShutUpAndSquat007 then why are you watching his video, if you already know how to do a hack squat?

  • @indian838 To compare hack squat form

  • @ShutUpAndSquat007 this isnt a hack squat? sadly at my gym all i have is a smith machine and no squat racks and stuff

  • @ShutUpAndSquat007 why do u say dont squat on a smith.. i usually dont, but i lift by myself and i really want to use more weight so i was thinking about trying the smith machine

  • @ShutUpAndSquat007

    a) I agree that you shouldn't do smith squats, barbell are way better

    b) this is most absolutely a hack squat, just look at the hack squat machines at the gym, the "bar" isn't behind your butt with them either.

  • @ShutUpAndSquat007 and the reasoning behind it.. is?

  • @ShutUpAndSquat007 there are many different ways to do a hack squat, this is just another variation.

  • @ShutUpAndSquat007 I'm not a smith machine hater, but I would never squat in a smith machine, it is just bad for the form and the body.

  • @ShutUpAndSquat007 shutupandsquat

  • @ShutUpAndSquat007 hes only trying to help man

  • his body is beautiful.

  • you didn't make your signature breathing sound at 2:15

    ; )

  • I want a t Shirt with the Monkey ^^

  • I personally don't think i'd advise someone to practice this kind of a squat, ever. I know plenty of gyms around my area that do have the hack squat machine without having to do these ridiculously dangerous SMITH MACHINE squats. I'm sorry, you can call me a hater or anything but from the angle he was in, any more weight and that would be asking for an injury. We can argue all day long, and yeah he appears to be in great shape but physical fitness doesn't equal good advice....ever

  • omg man wtf ?

  • oh my fu**ing god...why do you people always have to be such dicks and comment everything he does? Not everyone is on roids to have 120kg+ and be shirtless...and yes, you CAN do a smith-hack squat. That's why it's called SMITH hach squat. Freaking jerks..the guy enjoys what he does, and if u don't like sth. then leave it...

  • But why do a video with out a shirt when you are under 60 kg?

  • I thought hack squats were on the ground with the barbell behind u

  • This kid is built like a teenage baseball player. He will eventually see the light and do the juice.

  • @wolfpackforlife negative smh

  • what makes this a hack squat?

  • These are not hack squats!!

  • LOVE THE MUSCULAR DEFINITION, CUT, MUSCULAR DEVELOPMENT

NOT TO BIG, NOT TO THIN

    JUST RIGHT

  • mmm gay meaby

  • that's why his legs are a trash

  • @fogonabomba2 Thats why he squatted 225 for 41 reps right?

  • @santahatpk no matter the training

no matter how many reps he does

no matter the charge that it uses.

    BODYBUILDING/FITNESS = RESULTS NOTHING MORE

  • @fogonabomba2

he is a bsn sponsored athlete im pretty sure he know what he's doing, he's a model not a BBer he doesnt need big legs... plus he is natural

  • @edanimer

No. He is quite literally wrong in 90% of the things he says. He wears running shoes to squat. This exercise is batshit retarded and if you put any amount of weight on the bar you'd be pulled down and backwards very easily and probably injure yourself. He doesn't need to know his shit to model.

  • Why does he not a have a shirt on?
