So are Dan Akroyd and John Belusshi responsible for getting Brian Wilson to rejoin the Beach Boys toursin 1976? I saw a clip of them dragging Brian out of his room, dressed as Cops, telling him he was in violation of some code for writting songs about surfing, but having never actually surfed. This was in 1976, They dragged him out of his room out to the Beach and forced him to surf. It was pretty funny. It's here on YouTube.
I was privileged to see The Boys Live In Concert, over 2 nights, March 1978, in Sydney, Australia. I had a backstage pass on the second night, watched the show from side-stage, & got to talk to Brian as he first-entered the stadium off the crew-bus. A good concert, but there were clearly, sadly, tensions amongst the band. But .. Boy .. that memory will stay with me all my remaining life .. fantastic.
Mike Love is funny on stage, trying to do his version of jagger--sorta sticks his skinny ass out, prancing about. What a turd, but he was an important part of their sound, so I must respect him to a degree
@Mozart1220 Oh listen to "All I Wanna Do" or "Big Sur" and be quiet. Mike didn't have a fraction of the talent Brian had, but then who IS on Brian's level? Seriously. Blind fanboyism's no good. :(
Mike deserves a fair amount of shit, granted, but d00d was essential to the band being what it was - both now (cringe) and then (amazing). He *was* talented as a singer, lyricist, and occasional songwriter. Again, "All I Wanna Do", one of their best songs of the late 60s? Mostly his work.
@runnersdialzero333 Read some books on the subject. Ecen Carl and Dennis agree that Mik would have been nothing without Brian. Mike badgered and intimidated Brian and was, after Murry Wilson, the main reason Brian cracked up.
@Mozart1220 the main reason brian cracked up? how about he was mentally ill? i've read the books, but the fact is, brian isn't innocent in this, either. brian did a fair amount of fucked up shit to people who he was involved with, too, including mike.
however, i've never once heard carl or dennis say that mike specifically would be nothing without brian. the closest thing was dennis' "brian does everything" comments, which is a *huge* slight on himself and the band, anyway.
@runnersdialzero333 OK, what has Mike done outside of singing brian's songs? On REALLY bad solo album, and lawsuits against brian to get more money after he blew all he had. When Smil was being recorded, he HATED it so much Brian scrapped it. NOW he "loves" it. Not to mention his rant about McCartney at the R&R HOF. Hypocritical bastard. Read "Heroes and Villains" by Steve Gaines.
@Mozart1220 Brian didn't scrap Smile because of Mike, he scrapped it because he couldn't finish it - too open ended, too many pieces. Mike has written lyrics to dozens of Beach Boys songs, hits which likely wouldn't have done as well without his work. Not to mention some great Beach Boys songs that Mike wrote the majority of - "All I Wanna Do", "Let The Wind Blow", "Big Sur", etc.
Again, enough with being blinded by Brian fanboyism. No need to discredit the rest of the band.
@runnersdialzero333 Read some BB history. And the songs you mentioned wouldn't make a scrap pile had Brian not gone under. I don't discredit the rest of the band, just asshole MIke Love. And yes, Brian is my musical hero. How has Mikes "solo" carreer gone? The only hit the BB had withut Broian was "kokomo" and they had to get outside writers like John Phillips to write something that SOUNED like a BB song, and then not let Brian be a part of it to prove they didn't need him.
@Mozart1220 hrm. i have read a fair amount of their history. there's reality and then there's the blind "brian's a genius, the other guys were total assholes who exploited brian!" camp. mike's an ass, but he gets *far* too much shit.
those songs are great, by the way. i'm gonna go ahead and guess you've never heard them, and if you did, o fuckin' holy lord mike love (aka the devil) was involved, so it must be bad. again, bias. also, who cares about "hits"? i care about good songs.
@runnersdialzero333 I have heard them, and I never said all the other guys are assholes, only Mike Love. And if you don't thnk Brian is a genius than you are in a VERY tiny minority. The songs you mentioned would ever have been heard had Brian been well enough to write.
@Mozart1220 I never said Brian wasn't a genius. Brian *was* writing and participating when those songs came into being, and was just as "on top of things" and involved as he was for Pet Sounds when "Let The Wind Blow" was recorded.
Regardless, again, the whole, "Everything must be a 10/10 A-Game Brian track or it's not worth hearing" approach is bullshit and criminally discredits the rest of the band. You're doing it with comments like that whether you realize it or not.
@Mozart1220 Ah, now he's a hypocrite, too! How's that? Mike Love has been unabashedly lame since the day he was born and has never minced words or been shy to share how he really felt. So where does the hypocrisy come in?
@runnersdialzero333 Obvviously you haven't seen the vids where he praises "Smile" as a great work, after trashing it mercilessly in 67 when it could have made the Beach Boys as respected as the Beatles.
@Mozart1220 he didn't "trash it mercilessly". he said, "i don't like these lyrics and i think they'll alienate our fanbase." he said, "i don't understand them." he's never lied about that.
but y'know what? he was given those lines he questioned and didn't understand and y'know what he did? he sang them. sang his ass off. listen to the end of "cabinessence", one of the songs he specifically questioned. there's mike, singing his ass off. he trusted brian's judgement and did what he was told.
First, thanks for posting this. Second, another reason why the "French Suck". You have rare footage of a B.B. jam session and all that French F**k wants to do is talk over it.

Nice live performance of "It's OK". Mike is fun, so is Denny. Poor Brian wasn't really "back" at the time, he was clearly still half-alive (hate to say this but if u know what he had been going thru u'll get me right)
This is Karen Lamm whom he married twice. They met when Chicago and The BBs toured together in the early 70s, while she was married to Robert Lamm, singer/keyboard player with Chicago.
Her life was somewhat sad, a talented actress/model who lost a lot of scheduled work as she was difficult to work with (drugs). In her late 40s had bad drug-related health problems, was still addicted to prescription drugs/amphs, alone and broke. Sadly she died of a heart attack in 2001 @ only 49.
