  • Can you please make an instructional video on how to make this for a newborn baby? Ive tried and tried but cant get it any smaller, i would really appreciate it!

  • Whats the size of the hat using the G hook?

  • I tried and t tried to find the written directions. I perused through pages. I could not find it. Very frustrating experience.

  • i found the first round easy to follow but no matter how many times i watch it i can't see how its done and i don't understand the terms used.

  • Thanks so much Teresa for the wonderful Tutorial on the shell hat.It is fantastic .

A whole new world is opening up for me now that I am learning how to crochet again after 30 years.Sop far I have only made different lap blankets for Hospice. I saw that you also have graphs for crocheting.I know how to read one in Knitting that I have done for tears and quilting. Is there a page or a video how to read the crochet graphs?

Hope my spelling is OK and Thanks again,

    Happy Hooking Yoka

  • Hello,

I recently finished the beanie, but I used a chunky yarn and a size J crochet hook. And now I want to make the same beanie again in a slightly smaller size. I need the beanie to be about 2 inches smaller in diameter. Will using a smaller crochet hook work? And I was wondering how to determine about how much smaller of a crochet hook to use from a size J to get the beanie 2 inches smaller in diameter?

    Any info is greatly appreciated!

  • @bdamposey A smaller crochet hook will work to make a smaller cap. Experience will help you determine different sizes. Other then that, there are to many variables such as different size yarn and hooks. Even the most experienced crocheter will run in to work being to large or to small at times.

  • @tjw1963 Thanks! And I also wanted to say that you! I have somewhat of a self taught crocheter. One day I just bought a "teach yourself how to crochet" book and Ive been hooked ever since! Your instructions are always so great and thank you for the videos! They really helped me in the beginning when I was barely learning different stitches and trying to understand crochet directions. So again, thank you for all your help!

  • @tjw1963 Thanks so much!

  • How can I do it for a baby?

  • @poeticallydeep It can be made for a baby. You can use a smaller crochet hook to make a smaller cap. You will not use all the increase rounds either or it may be to big.

  • Well Theresa, I've crocheted 2 of your other beanies and the shell scarf, had no problem with them, but I can't make head nor tale of this beanie. I can't see what you are doing in relation to the rest of the round. I can't match the pattern up to the video. I reeeeally wanted to make this, but it's 2 am where I am, and I have to concede defeat after nearly 4 hrs at it.

  • @JazzDanca The written instructions are posted on my crochet blog. This is a challenging pattern. It is worked by increasing over 2 rounds. One rounds sets up the increase stitches by working smaller shells. The next round continues with the increase stitches working the full shell.

  • hoi i began again whit other jarn en i made het now so i dit something wrong and i know now what whas rong.

i dit a slipstich to soon in my work

    thanks for this video

  • hello

in round 5 i come out in a little hole en must do the 3 than 1 dan 3 in de top of a shell.

    is this right???

sorry my englisch is not so good but i hope you understand me.

  • I am a semi-beginner and I found that it helped me to follow this by increasing my hook to H and to follow along with the written pattern. NOW it is all starting to make sense and match the video instractions. Frustration averted ... for now... hehe :)

  • @jazzdanca59 How long have you been crocheting?

  • Thank you so much for sharing this pattern, Teresa! I found your pattern on Ravelry and I was a bit confused by the wording, but I crocheted along with you on the video and my hat is turning out beautifully now! Again, thank you so much!

  • Thank you so much for sharing this pattern, Teresa! I found your pattern on Ravelry and I was a bit confused by the wording, but I crocheted along with you on the video and my hat is turning out beautifully now! Again, thank you so much!

  • @eroznowski I am glad to hear it is turning out for you because this can be a challenging pattern.

  • @tjw1963 It is a bit tough! I finished and I LOVE IT!!

  • @eroznowski The next time you make something difficult, it will be easier for you.

  • Doea this hat start out as a regular hat?

Im trying to make an adult hat and its just not going well, ive made lots and lots of hats but this one is the only one i seem to have trouble with (adult hat )... :( plz help my customer is waiting.. :(

  • @ilove2crochet13 The hat is shells the whole way. You can work the crown with basic stitches for the size, so you do not have to increase shells.

  • @ilove2crochet13 Ok, but incase i have the problem again, i have tried a few times to make an adult size hat, it uslaly turns into a beanie, is thier someting i am doing thats wrong?

  • super great easy-to-follow clear vid... yay!

  • Hi Teresa. First of all I'd like to thank you for all your videos and instructions. You make crochet enjoyable to me.

I'd like to make this set of scarf/hat for a friend of mine (her bday is coming soon), and would like to start it today. I have enough yarn (Red Heart Super Saver) but I don't have the proper hook (4.25 mm). I have a 5mm, I was wondering it make too much of a difference? Thank you in advance for your reply and attention.

  • @elainebitt A size 5mm will make it slightly larger. It should turn out and fit just about the same.

  • @tjw1963

    thanks Teresa!

  • Hi Teresa, my tension seems to be really tight, and I am needing to add another increase row/s because even using an I hook I can't seem to make an adult size hat. I'm afraid of how airy/holey it will be if I continue to go up in hook size. Do you have a suggestion for adding another increase row/s after Round 6? Would I just do the 3DC, Ch1, 3DC then Sh-5DC twice, and then repeat around? Thanks for any suggestions. I think it is great how much information and help you provide!

  • @jessicawilson79 Rounds 5 and 6 are the increase rounds. If you need more increase rounds, you will use rounds 5 and 6 as a reference for the amount of stitches you may need on additional increase round.

  • I just found your video's. I am teaching my daughter-in-law how to crochet, but she gets a little frustrated when she is by herself and gets confused. Now I reference your video's that she can always have at hand. THANKS!

  • @rosewest55 You are welcome.

  • Theresa, you are a wonderful teacher. We all appreciate your time and patience for the video's that you have made.

one request if it's possible have you ever used the knifty knitter round loom???

a video of that would be very much appreciate it.

    thank you

  • @angie579 I appreciate the comment, thank you.

  • hi T, started your hat tonight, didnt need to stop it once found the video to be easy and understandable - will do a video once it is done x

  • @neencrochet Hi Neen, I hope you are doing well! I can't wait to see what you come up with!

  • ive got to say, ive been using your amazing vids to get these amazing pieces... I love your tuts.. theyre slow enough to understand but fast enough to not get bored.. however, this shell hat seems to be the HARDEST tut to follow.. after like round 4-5.. im lost, ive tried it 3 times, and got lost every time.. any tips?

  • @AidenJules This is a challenging cap. I do provide the written instructions on my crochet blog. The link is in the video details below the video.

  • which round do you get lost at? in round 5 she is doing close to the same thing as in round 3. Only alternating between groups of 3dc, ch1, 3dc: and 5dc

  • I have a hard time making puff stiches. I would like to learn how to make pretty toilet roll paper holder. Or i guess you call it toilet paper cover. You cover your toilet paper with it. I use to know how to make them. But i forgot how. Something to just sit on the bathroom shelf, or back of your toilet to look pretty. :)

    Thanks! God bless. :)

  • Hello teresa, thank you so much for your tutorials, I learn so much from them...with this shell hat do I use a smaller hook if I want to make it for a child?

  • @daylasoul1 A smaller crochet hook will make the hat smaller. You can also work less increase rounds to make a smaller hat to.

  • @tjw1963 Thank you...

  • After two days attempting to make this, and many many failed attempts, I have finally done it! I don't know why this hat was so hard for me to make, but I am so pleased to finally have managed it. Thanks to your Teresa for all of your tutorials and videos. I took up crocheting again to quit smoking and your videos have helped keep me busy. Two and a half months and still counting!

  • @Kiahanna This is a challenging hat so I am happy that you ended up successful in getting it complete. I appreciate the comment, thank you!

  • I just finished the hat thanks for the tut...I got it on my head.

  • @4bumblebee4 You are welcome!

  • @desnchris06 I do not think it is demeaning at all. I meant no disrespect in my request. I have viewed her other videos and they were all very easy to follow. All but this one. There are parts that are skipped out or faded out and suddenly we're four or five stitches ahead. I know there are slow motion parts in this video. I have watched it more than a dozen times. I am glad that you picked it up on one viewing, but other people are not so fortunate. Hence the asking for additional help

  • tank you so much theresa. your vids have made me go from a beginner to a well seasoned chrochet-ist. lol! i made this hat for my daughter who is 3 and used purple and bright green. she loved it! but i also made the floer in your other tuturial and attached it to the side of the hat. and made her a matching scarf. now i'm working on me a brown and dark green one. thank you so much for taking the time to teach so many people! you ARE the best!

  • Is there any way that you could re do this instruction video? I have found all of your other videos to be very easy to follow, but this one has several times where things are cut out after slow motions ect and I miss what you are doing. It also seems to go very fast (not the stitches, but the actual process that is required in making the hat). I have never been able to learn by reading written instructions. Please help :)

  • @Kiahanna in this vid there are slow motion and she uses the same terminology she uses in all her vids. to ask her to redo it is a little demeaning in my eyes. she took the time out of her day to do this great one. there is no need to redo it. if you are stuck rewind. and pause. that's what i do.I got the drift on my first try. this is not a fast hat to make. and learning takes time.

  • i really want to make this hat (site below) but i dont know how to make the arrow! help?

    (w)ww.etsy.com/listing/52608632/aang-hat-beanie-from-avatar-the-last

  • @0tterzindawaterz I could come up with an arrow of my own that may different than the arrow you are referring to.

  • @0tterzindawaterz

all you do is choose a spot where you would like to start the arrow & start using a new color& then when u find it to be how wide u want it then just go back to your original color untill you come back around :)

  • I just want to say that you do a wonderful job on your tutorials, thank you!

  • @bratbone You are welcome! I appreciate the comment!

  • I have learned to crochet from your videos but I have to say that this one is terrible. You are going WAY WAY to fast (talking and doing)and not showing how you can even locate the single crochet stitch from the double, which is hard to tell with this pattern. VERY hard to understand. it's like you were in a big hurry that day. I would still love to make this hat...can you help please??

  • Got to round 4 and gave up --- :(

  • **** Can you PLEASE!!! explain what yarn strands go where after 30 seconds. I wish there was a slow motion tutorial on the magic circle. Because I was able to get all 4 shells done - but when I went to tighten it = FAIL.

I'm using two strings of yarn for thickness. Because I don't want it to be a flimsy hat. So please help ... 0:30 seconds to ... the first double crochet.

I also thought that we were tucking in the lose stand of yarn --- because it wasn't explained not to blend it in :(

  • @latteinred

OH THANK GOD I FOUND YOUR TUTORIAL !!!

  • @latteinred There is a slow motion tutorial on the magic circle! You can work a chain and join instead!

  • @latteinred You can use the standard chain to start your hat. I do have a video tutorial on the magic circle. You can use the standard chain to start your hat.

  • I'm wondering if I could make this for a baby. A one-month old baby. If I can, will you briefly tell me how? If not, can you direct me to a video for making a similar baby beanie? I've already made your "stripe crochet beanie cap hat", but it's now too small for the baby. Thanks...and I absolutely love using your videos. I watch so many of them.

  • @georgeandjordan I meant to say that I already made your "strip crochet baby beanie" and it is now too small.

  • @georgeandjordan The easiest way to increase a size is to use a larger crochet hook. You can follow the adult version of the stripe cap but use less increase rounds.

  • hi i have a question about the first row, is it ok to tighten the centre later when your on the 2nd or 3rd row? i rind it had to find the sc when its tightened up.

  • @LittleMissJennifer84 You can wait until the end of your project to tighten the beginning.

  • @tjw1963 thanks, its looking really nice! I was wondering if there is a pattern for a matching shell scarf? thanks.

  • @LittleMissJennifer84 Yes, I do have a matching scarf.

  • Hi Teresa,I need your help here please...I want to crochet bags from a certain site and the pattern seems a bit confusing!...the abbreviation of this symbol * means repeat, but I can't get it when the pattern's written [rep from * 15 times]..What does it means? please help me understand it..Thanks.

  • @Bufurzone It means that you will repeat the set of instructions from the asterisk 15 times.

  • @tjw1963 Thanks :)

  • hi teresa, i have a question. Im working on this hat. I get to were the pattern looks like the first square. I think at the second round. I cant get past that. I dont understand and for the life of me I cant comprehend what to do next. Please help me. I made the scarf , its baby blue, so pretty. So I need to finish the hat. thanks for your help.LOL

  • @mlm1025 The link to the written instructions is posted in the video details below the video. The placement of the stitches is shifted a bit, to put in increase stitches.

  • I agree! Thank you so much for posting these! This has helped me greatly!

  • @shantastic84 You are welcome.

  • Hi Ms. Teresa. I have been watching your videos and they have been a great help :) I was wondering if you could tell me how I would go about using the shell stictch to make a baby/todler hat. I notice in this hat you increase to make it bigger, but how would I make it smaller?

  • @mrsmacphail8804 Thank you. What you can do is less increase rounds which will make a smaller cap. Keep in mind that several smaller sizes exist in the large size cap. Another way to make a cap smaller is to use a smaller size crochet hook. Lets say you find that you worked less increase round but the cap is still not small enough. A smaller crochet hook may get the size you are looking for.

  • I wanted to say I really enjoy your teaching. I learned so many new stitches from watching your videos and now I am showing my mother. but I was wondering is there a way to do this without the magic circle in the beginning? it sounds silly, but the circle is messing me up. lol

  • @lilithtree Thank you. You can start with a Chain 7, join. You will continue with the pattern from there. I also provide written instructions on my crochet blog. The link is posted in the video details below the video.

  • Hello Teresa. Thank you so much for all of your videos. I find them extremely helpful. I have a question regarding this hat. Is it possible to switch colors on every row like you would with a sc or dc? If so, how do you go about doing that? Thank you.

  • @amethyst620002000 Yes you can change colors. When you get to the end of each round, you will secure the yarn, cut and change color. You will join the new color in the next stitch instead of slip stitching. The written instructions are posted on my crochet blog.

  • Hi teresa!! I've always known how to basic crochet but now I'm getting into hats and such. This is the problem I'm running into. I can crochet a hat my way and have no seem and it looks good but if I want to change color, it's not even and you can tell. Now if I do it other ways and end each row, then I can change color whenever I want but everytime I can clearly see a seam. Is there anyway around this??

  • i will post on your facebook tha hats i made for my baby .. im monette one of your follower .. thanks again ...

  • i will post on your facebook the hats i made for my baby ... thanks again ... muah

  • Hi teresa , I just wanted to say that i didn't know anything about crocheting and by watching your videos i have learn so much about it. I have made a few of your stuff by wayching your videos, but i can't follow through your written instruction. Anyways thank you so much for sharing so much for the great videos. I was wondering if you have a video of the Brioche Hat Crochet ?

Thank you once again for such inspiring videos.

  • hi Teresa i love you so much ... i learn all the trick and advance my crochet skills because of you ...i cannot follow the written instruction pattern ...so im happy when i come across your site .....keep inspiring all of us and a big thanks for your generous help..

  • @ajwakz I appreciate the comment, thank you!

  • You're simply the best. Long live the Queen-Thanks Teresa!

  • You're simply the best. All Hail the Queen of Crochet-Teresa-Thank You!

  • i love how this hate is made...but when i got to round seven and on it looks round and flat..is that the way its suppose to be or did i mistake somthing..plz let me know..

  • @kimico Thank you.

  • i was wondering if you could make this into more of a triang-lish stalking hat?

  • **triangle-ish

  • i dont understand when you say to double crochet in the single crochet. do you mean literally squeexe throught the knot or the space beside it?

  • i love it so much...but i counldnt made one for myself yet :(

  • Keep practicing and you will get it.

  • I love it! I made one for me!

  • Hi Theresa, I wanted to thank you for all your tutorials. I have learned a whole lot from them. Yesterday I did the white hat with brim and it came out beautiful. My daughter loved it so much that I ha to give it to her to wear. Thanks one again....by th way, where can I get that crochet grip you had on your video?

  • The grips on my hooks are pencil grips. Any type of pencil grip will work. The ones I use are from Wal-mart and called Gel Grips or Gooshy Grips.

  • Hi Theresa, I want you to know that I learned to crochet from your youtube videos, a year and a half ago, and I've made so many things since then, including this hat last Christmas for 4 different people. I was wondering if you have any ideas on how I can convert this pattern to make a Teapot Cozy?

  • Once you get the first few rounds complete and just below the spout, you would want to work in rows. This will make the split so you have a place for spout.

  • Theresa, you are the best, this one however the shell bunny hat, is not clear at all, i had to give it up in the middle since i couldn't make sense of the instructions, if you have the chance to film it again, this time with clearer instructions that would be so great, thanks

    Sarah, Israel

  • Do i have to use the same size crochet hook, cause i've been using a 4.25 mm and it seems to work out for everything?

  • I am using a G hook which may be similar size to what you are using.

  • hi You are amazing!!! Just wanted to know if i can use any type of yarn to make this hat or do I have to make it with thick? I have this other kind of yarn I bought to make a scarf but I really want to also make a hat to go with it. Thanks

  • You do not have to use the exact same yarn and brand that I use. If you choose a different size yarn, you may need to modify to smaller or large yarn. If you purchase a different brand of yarn that is 4 ply, it should come out close to the size it is supposed to be.

  • you rock at crochet!!!! i would get so annoyed that i would quit, all i can make is a scarf, well i know how to but ive never finished one. i know this is a dumb question but where can you get crochet hooks?

  • Thank you. You can purchase crochet hooks at Wal-mart or at a local yarn store. If you do not have any of those your can purchase them online from Joann Fabric and Crafts, Herrschners or Annies Attic.

  • Hello Teresa, I love your site and I learned how to make two hats b/c of it. They are so easy to understand and this is my favorite crochet site. I am very new to crocheting and was working on the shell beanie hat and I have a question. On the parts of the instructions that say "SL st to 3rd DC, CH1 and then SC in DC". Do you actually SL st into the 3rd DCand then do the CH1 and SC all into the same stitch? Thanks for you help. Erin

  • If the instructions tell you to slip stitch to the third double crochet, then that is what you need to do to get to the starting point. You make the chain 1 and work the single crochet in the same stitch.

  • I see, I did the basic beanie hat, and it turned out perfect, I'll buy some of the same yarn to this one also, maybe it'll turn out as good :D

    I apreciate the help.

  • No I'm not familiar with it sorry.

Do you always use certain chrochet needles and matching yarn. When saying matching I mean in thickness? 'Cus if you do I'll know what yarn to look for.

  • With this hat I used a size 5.5mm crochet hook and 4 ply yarn. I use a lot of different size crochet hooks but 5.5mm and 4 ply yarn are what I use a majority of the time.

  • I used the same hook size, the tension isn't tight, so that's not the problem. I think I might have used a thinner yarn.

We don't use the Ply size here in Denmark, so it's hard to find something that matches. We use OZ instead. I think it's the same thing, different words and amounts though, you know like Inches and Cm.

  • We use weight in America too for the weight of the skein. The thickness of the yarn is what is important and what makes the hat larger or smaller. We have a big variety of yarn thicknesses here in America. Are you familiar with gauge?

  • For some reason mine got REALLY small, I'll use this as a babyhat, and try make another one.

  • There are a few reasons that the cap may be smaller. You natural crochet tension may be tight so using a larger crochet hook may solve the problem. You may have used a smaller yarn and/or hook combination which will make the hat smaller.

  • Magic circle is hard

  • It looks so pretty! Im a beginner but I could follow very easily. Could you tell me what to modify to make this hat for an infant? and what to do to also make a kid size ( 8 years old) Would love to make this for my baby expected in december and for my niece.

  • The easiest way will be to use a smaller crochet hook which will make a smaller hat. You can also use less increase rounds for a smaller head. You will need to know the size of an infant head and the size of the 8 year old head to make to make a custom fit. There will be trial and error when modifying a pattern.

  • SO clear and well done.

    Good job.

Can you slip stitch the edge to border it or will that cause it to roll?

  • You can do a slip stitch all the way around if you want to.

  • Hi Teresa. Can you please make a video on how to make a infant poncho? I would love to make one but I am terrible at reading written crochet patterns correctly. Thank you very much! =)

  • What size is this hat is it for an adult?

  • It is an adult size, approximate 22-24 inch head.

  • i'm finding it so hard to hold on to the "magic loop" and crochet at the same time... is there another way to start this or no?

  • Yes, you can always replace the magic circle start with a chain and join. For this hat you can try a chain 4 and join. The magic circle is an alternative.

  • i am making a scarf do u know how to make da pretty lines under da scarf

  • What lines are you referring to? Is it a different color?

  • no its athe henge on the scarf

  • Trying to make a matching hat with the scarf I made my mom. I chained 7 since I haven't mastered the magic circle, but it seems like my rounds aren't even. Is that normal?

  • What do you mean they are not even? They should be matching up at the end when you join. The actual rounds are going to be curvy because of the shell stitch.

  • I love your videos I have ade so many things already. You are so easy to follow.

Thus proyect I found a little difficult. I did round 4 and I ended up with 7 shells not 8. I wonder what i did wrong. I'm going to start all over.

  • i keep coming up with seven shells on round four. I dont know what im doing wrong. Do u have any idea?

  • It sounds to me that you are just missing 1 of the increases somewhere.

  • I like your patterns. thank you for your lessons. it helpful for me.

  • Thank you. :)

  • Wow, nice classic beanie hat. I'm inspired by your works. Keep up the good work. By the way, can shell beanie hat can be transformed as bag just like what you did on traditional crochet beanie hat? Kinda interesting. ^_^

  • You can use any hat upside down as a hand bag.

  • Thanks for the tip. ^_^

  • I love your patterns and lessons. Your voice is also very pleasant to hear. Do you have a pattern for making a tam or berret hat. Please post a lesson if you do. Thank you so much.

  • There are 2 beret hats already posted. You will find a listing of hats by going to my main channel page.

  • hi! i really like your crafts. im from a place where crochet materials are very limited. as far as my research goes, the largest hook here is 3.75mm. can i still make this one the same size using small size hooks? it's really frustrating. thanx! you're great by the way.. hehe

  • You can crochet with different size hooks. You will need to modify by adding more increase rounds or the hat will be to small.

  • Can this be made for a newborn?

  • It can be made smaller with some modifications. You would use less increase rounds. You can also make it smaller by using a smaller hook and smaller yarn.

  • How much yarn would this hat require? I was also wondering if this could be made striped, since it is worked in rounds.

  • You can make the cap with 1 skein. You can work it in stripes.

  • Hi ...there ...would you please teach us a basic bucket hat and amelie hat?it would b a favour for all of us..thanks.

  • What is a bucket hat? There are so many different kind of hat.

  • hi...teresa i've become a fan of u..u r an excellent teacher.i have a request...m not able to do a basic hat..can u do it for me 1ce again.i miss out stiches n get confused.

  • Thank you. :)

  • hi teresa, i managed to do the shell beanie hat and it was great. thanks, you are a great teacher.

  • Thank you. It is great that you were able to figure it out.

  • God Bless your life with abundance, thanks for sharing this beautiful hat!

  • Thank you very much. :)

  • hi i love your videos : i was wondering if you have ever crochet a baby blanket that after it ws crochet it had strips of fabric weaved through it??, Thank you

  • Thank you. I have never made anything like that before.

  • i love it

  • Thank you. :)

  • I love it soooooo much!! where can I find the written pattern. I want to try it right now!!!

    Love your work amaizing

  • Thank you. The pattern is posted to the right of the video under the "More Info" link.

  • thank you so much........I so love your work.

  • You are welcome. :)

  • when you slip stiched 3 in the video did you go all the way around? or was it just the 3 in the first 3 stiches.

  • It was just in the first few stitches, to get over to the stitch that I needed to work in.

  • is the yarn you're using for this hat red Heart Super saver in Aran fleck? Becuase it looks a lot like the yarn that I'm using for a scarf for my mom.

  • It could be but I no longer have the label to see the color. It looked like a new co
