  • I was actually going to buy this DVD, until I saw this. I'd rather not :/

  • Needs more Tagtgren.

  • Well from what I heard, Mikael was using "In ear monitoring" to hear himself on stage, he apparently compensated his technique and ended up using a bad and lazy technique, so there is nothing wrong with his voice at all, he was just using a bad technique, don't worry guys XD

  • I actually love his voice here

  • Akerfeldt! Please!! get off your sunglasses and bang your head!!! :D

  • That is perfect!

  • He will always remain the most brutal growler !

  • It's funny when you know that 90% of the guys complaining about his growls couldn't last not even for 2 songs !

    Mikael's growls are f*cking epic ! |m|,

  • erm, am i the only one who is seeing mikael bleeding from his eyes?

  • THIS SOUNDS SOOOOO EEPPPIIIICCCC

  • @K6Mace couldn't agree more

  • people should stop complaining about his voice, he still tops most/all other artists.

I've seen Opeth live back in September and i couldnt believe how Demon of the Fall did live even better then on the actual record.

    guy's massive

  • he must be sick

  • His voice isnt so bad but he needs to bang his head.

  • suck my cock and lick my heart

  • @lordmorgoth7 suck my guts*

  • @Thulle3 i know, just saying for fun

  • @lordmorgoth7 I think it's guts, but yeah :P

  • There's nothing wrong with his voice, he said in an interview that he doesn't "feel" the Death Metal like he did when he was younger and it isnt the music he wants to make anymore.

Really disappointing, because I was hoping for another Bloodbath album with Mikael on the mic.

  • Real let down when i saw them live in Hellfest, Mikael is to used to playign guitar for Opeth and standing still all the time that he looks a little awkward on stage. I went to Bloodstock 2010 year but didn't go and see them because of how dissapointed I was last time, I regret it a bit now because this gig looks alot better than the one I saw.

  • Mikael is the best and always will be - his demon growls are still here, pronunciation, perspicuity...

  • Sure, his voice here is different than when they performed on Wacken, and his clean voice cuts through more, but it's still damn good. Sounds more old school.

  • BLOODBATH!!! \m/

  • the clean voice @ opeth have made his growls very soft

  • Can some1 play this music @ my funeral?

  • i LIKE THIS SONG

  • I was at this show and I can't remember it sounding bad at all. Most probably because I was fucking wasted and was in every single pit. But yeah as much as I worship this bad you can't deny they sound pretty awful...

  • @Sappy98 Nah I'm with you, and I wasn't wasted. I think it just didn't sound as bad live as it does off the soundboard.

  • i love this song!!!!

  • The lack of Dan Swano upsets the balance in the force.

  • @gingermadman Sodomizer's a cool guy. He's great in both Bloodbath and Katatonia.

  • Lol, guitarist smoking a cigarette :P Epic.

  • Epic sunglasses are epic

  • wtf haters?its diffrent but it still sounds awesome

  • The in ear monitors explanation is bullshit. He has been around for more than 15 years playing live to know how to growl properly on stage, The royal albert Hall sounds like shit too and it's a whole different band.

Not just this, but many other live gigs had this shitty vocals. I guess he strained them too much with The Fathomless Mastery and the endless touring + alcohol (said by himself) took its toll on him.

That guy from Katatonia sounds far better than Mike.

  • why the fuck is everyone complaining about his voice, it still sounds good and he still has good control over his notes and when then when you compare his live vocals to other bands it still sounds good. seriously does no one have anything better to do than rip on a his vocal skill when most people could sing half as well as he could. and don't forget there are 4 other members of the band that all played well

  • This is weak vocally, I know Mikael can do way better. You have to consider also that this song was recorded with Peter Tagtgren; the daddy of death metal! Mikael is great, and all around better singer, but no one contends with Peter when it comes to sounding carnal as fuck!

  • wtf! awful voice!

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger on vocals

  • damn .. the vocals are weak as fuck :/

  • @guitardude901 yep, pretty awful, the backing vox sound better lol

  • what the fuck happend to THE growl? 0_o''

  • @BassMolluf decades of brutal growls wore it down.

  • @k5lta

yep indeed.. he still sounds good but just not like back in the days :)

  • @BassMolluf agreed, hes still epic though.

  • no fuckin way!!

  • guitars+cigarettes = awesome

  • wtf?

  • Fuck the vocals, those guitars sound amazing. I don't even like this band but I visit this video every once in a while for that crispy, delicious tone.

  • I hope they release another album soon =( I'm a BIG fan of their music.

  • Can you people stop with the growls shit, Mikael explains it on a recent interview, watch mikael akerfeldt interview part 6 and he explains that the problem on this show was that he was using IN EAR MONITORS you fucktards, stop with this shit, fucking ignorant people READ AND LISTEN FIRST ! thumps up this so other idiots can see and this will stop the stupid comments

  • QUE CARAJOS LE PASO A SU VOZ?? QUE ALGUIEN ME DIGA PORFAVOR!!! :(

  • This explains opeth's last CD... only clean vocals...

  • @peakeanatomy Watch some mikael interviews you dumbshit, don´t bash if you don´t know.

  • @MarianOctavarium Ok, show me now where is the bash :)

I love Akerfeldt, he is one of my influences as a death metal singer, so, stfu if you don't know shit about me.

"dont bash if you don't know" wow, srsly?

  • I think Mikael won't be able to growl for a while.. if not forever.

  • woah what's wrong with mikael's voice?

  • People complaining about his voice... for fucks sake, he's been doing death metal growls for over 20 years, give the guy a break.

  • @divine0enigma Corpsegrinder too, and look to his voice... still the same brutal...

  • Comment removed

  • @divine0enigma

A lot of vocalists have been doing death growls for over 20 years. Their vocals haven't gotten this bad. However, I read an interview where Akerfeldt said his ear monitor wasn't working, so he couldn't hear himself.

  • Still sounds pretty heavy just not as now as usual more of a snarl in this... previous pages of comments explain the lack of lows IE: the monitor made it sound weird to hi thus he changed a bit.

  • You peoples ams the weirds. I actually like how his voice sounded in this song.

  • Disappointment ...his voice is for sure not upto the mark here.

    Åkerfeldt is a god otherwise.

BTW Sodomizer looks real badass with that fucking cigarette in his mouth.

    HAIL BB.

  • I think he's not forcing his voice and can do better than that

  • What the fuck happened to his voice... ?

  • hell i got a better growl than that :S

  • @Corpzmaker91 i know right

  • He has explained why is vox sounds like this their srill brutal just look up Opeth Live 2011 videos from Sonishpere

  • Nothing's wrong with his voice. He explained it occurred because of the inner ear monitors he used instead of usual earplugs. He explained that they are good for clean singing but not for growling. He couldn't hear himself well so he used a different technique of growling. Not on purpose of course. The same thing happened on Opeth's 'Royal Albert Hall' performance. His growl is still fine and smashing :D

  • Comment removed

  • Opeth + Katatonia = a BLOODBATH

  • I still love this version.....his gargley voice just makes it such a filthy song. Both styles are good.

  • Yeah, Blakkheim sounds amazing here. He should just take over lead vocals if it comes to Mikael leaving the band.

  • @RobboElRobbo agreed

  • guitarist sounds better than akerfeldt. use him or get tägtgren back.

  • Is am a HUGE! Mikael fan, but I think he is losing his growls, hence why the new Opeth album is just clean sung.

  • @MrProtoDrake he mentioned in a recent interview that this is not the reason the new opeth album is clean, its because he feels that he cannot develop the death metal style anymore and about his vocals, read marioluigi1234567's comment....

  • mike?? que le ocurre a tu incleible voz!!!!! .....

  • That last "EATEN!!!!!!!!!!!" was pretty fucking awesome.

  • Mikaels voice is gone, that is how it sounds like...

Or he just had a bad day...

Somehow i think of Gorefest when i hear him in this song.

  • @Titant2

He addressed this in a recent interview. It's not his voice, it's his in-ear monitors that made him use a less brutal technique. They've fixed the problem.

  • @jteachey2

    Oh that is good :P

  • @Titant2 here this at wacken 2011 that was way better than this

  • Yeah he doesn't sound the same anymore (I mean Blakkheim seriously outshines him), but well Mikael has been the king of growling for almost two decades so I guess it had to end sometime.

  • @cessebesse apparently it was caused by different earplugs that he used. he heared his own voice differently than normal, so he changed his technique which made him sound like this. his throat hurt after this show (and others) but now he says he switched back to his old ear plug and his throat doesn't hurt anymore after performing. so I guess the problem is solved ^^. I heard him live recently and I thought it was really good. Although I'm a fanboy and it was my first time seeing them live x)

  • @DarthSivius ok good to hear, hopefully he will be the king of growling for a few years more then haha ;)

  • @cessebesse I most definilty hope so!

I'm really waiting on a new Bloodbath record

  • his vocals sounded a shit load better at the wakken carnage

  • If you don't think 20+ years of death metal growling has an affect on your vocal chords than you're a fucking idiot. Mikael still slays anything you faggots could ever produce. Fuck you.

  • I was at bloodstock last year and I have to say, although I was looking forward to this band the most, they were shit. Not just sound wise, but performance wise too. Seemed very sloppy with missed cues and lyrical errors. I'm guessing there was some cutting/pasting or overdubs involved in the mixing of this.

Then Cannibal Corpse came on next and showed how it was done properly!

  • @WarChord Cannibal Corpse is shit. The vocals are nothing but shitty grunts that never change which, in my opinion, brings down the rest of the band to

  • @NicotineArmoir The vocals don't exactly change in Bloodbath either. I get what you are saying about CC but sounds like you've only heard the early stuff. You couldn't possibly think the more recent stuff sounds the same. Different vocalist for a start lol.

  • @NicotineArmoir hey guess the fuck what??? its not all about the vocals, the guitars make the songs good

  • @MegaTimebomb098 also agreed

  • This is not how it sounded at Bloodstock. He couldn't even remember the words ffs. Really disappointing.

  • @shadiec As explained below, this is exactly how is was at Bloodstock... we take a direct feed from the stage and then the sound is cleaned, mixed and mastered and then you get this.... You may be getting confused with a memory of what you heard, being in the crowd rather than listening to it through your computer - a big difference to the feel and sound of a 80,000 watt system along with 12,000 people and a couple of small speakers on your TV/Computer - not too much we can do about that ;O)

  • @TheDarkBox No no no... he is right... I believe that due to solar winds... and... umm... convection currents...

  • @shadiec You were probably too stoned from every1 lighting up

  • actually, in an interveiw i saw y'day he mentions that the bad growling was due to him wearing inner ear monitors off late. Hence, the sound sounds different to him. So unconsciously, he was compensating, coz it sounded that clear to him & him alone. Plus constant touring leads to a lil vocal chord problem. But he only first noticed this after watching royal albert hall. No growling on the new album coz he doesnt like what it sounds like anymore n thinks he cant take it any further with opeth.

  • Don't think Mikael's voice is suited for the Nightmares Made Flesh album, tbh.

  • One person won't taste his daughter.

  • @matwal05 you are fucking sick and morbid...i can't believe that something like that even came to your minds...

  • @DiamondDimebagDarrel Those are lyrics from the song, you dumb shit.

  • @RobboElRobbo yeah i didn't say they aren't morbid...but they way he said it, it's just disgusting...who would even like to taste his daughter? besides in the lyrics it doesn't say "own" daughter, but someones daughter... and it's still sick hahahah...

  • Two big boxes on my pc, that song fucking rocks. Great Quality, i love it!!!!!!!

  • @GeneralG3nocidik Lol what do you listen to some dick sucker band like Fleshgod Apocalypse? Go fuck yourself.

  • @barrettdc1

    U mad bro?

  • i believe something is happening to his voice...

  • @OsacrDreamMetal :( :(

  • @OsacrDreamMetal watch?v=2Ht1seTCcDQ&feature=relmfu

  • @OsacrDreamMetal too much Opeth... LOL

  • @OsacrDreamMetal In a recent interview, he explained that the monitor made his voice sound weird to him when he heard himself, so he compensated. He had no idea he sounded like THAT.

  • @marioluigi1234567

no, he had something Iike an accident with his voice

  • @gearsofpizza2 i dont think so, where did you hear that? cuz ive seen the interview that marioluigi is talking about and thats what mikael said...

  • @marioluigi1234567 Funny thing they decided to make a DVD out of this footage, knowing he sounded like that. :)

  • @marioluigi1234567 Sorry mate, I love Mikael to death, but i saw the same about Opeth at the RAH and at Sonisphere. He has lost that amazing unique growl.

  • @marioluigi1234567

Sounds like a pretty lame excuse to me.

Don't get me wrong: i love Mikael and his growls but i've been getting increasingly concerned since 2006\7 about his voice. Shouldn't have stopped smoking IMHO!

  • @marioluigi1234567 his voice is weird, anyway stills good.

  • @marioluigi1234567 Metal vocals like this are 90% feel. Sure, shitty monitoring fucks you up a little, but i guarantee a veteran like mikael could do this day in day out without ANY monitoring, and it would still hold up tonally... providing his voice did! It has to be his voice as well, no way could monitoring cause all of this. RIP The might Mikael death growl. :(

  • @ericandtegan

It looks like he's better now? /watch?v=hn9lUUVZbKs&list=FLy_0O6GJVOdrzHqUNxk_rLg&index=1&feature=plpp_video

  • @Hedeskog89 I cant seem to get the link to work.. I am a massive fan, so i hope you are right!

  • @OsacrDreamMetal I think he is drunk as fuck xD

  • @OsacrDreamMetal It's a pain to do deep vocals when it's fast paced song. I Guess he can't be arsed with the effort

  • @OsacrDreamMetal In ear monitors, Mikael explains it on a recent interview, check it out, it´s part 6 of the interview I think =)

  • @OsacrDreamMetal

Ye he hurted it both here and at the royal albert hall, he explains a lot in this interview: " Opeth interview - Mikael Åkerfeldt (part 3) "

  • @OsacrDreamMetal He says he lost interest in doing Brutals, no he just lost his ability..

  • @vercerant He hasnt' lost his ability. Check out the Bloodbath encore they did 11/1/11. He's stated several times the difference you hear in his voice is due to using ear monitors instead of earplugs.

  • @boomershadow i meant he is not doing same as he did before, it's just different..checked the concert you've mentioned and i still think he lost his ability to do fine brutals..just watch again any older videos, you'll sure realise the difference i believe..

  • Mikael looks damn fine. . . just thought I would share ;) <3

  • Vocals sound a lot like Entombed in my ear :)

  • this is weird. mikael's sound is way out of control and he sings like 'lets just finish this gig so i can go home'. The 2011 opeth album 'Heritage' will not include growls or death metal nuancest. mikael said that "i always wanted to do heritage-like music. death metal time for opeth is over.". well if he really wants to change the entire genre of opeth , this is like: 'Fuck you fans! i'll do what i want.' so weird.

    great song anyways..

  • dang his growling disappeared :( maybe thats why opeths new album wont have growl :( its a shame because i havent seen them live and planned to do it in their next tour. anyways.

  • @Fac117 This is at the very end of the set. His vocals are shot. It does not mean he can't (or won't) growl anymore, it's just fatigue from singing constantly.

  • @emperorofthenorth5 The new album has no growls. Mike just did an interview last week and said he's not as interested in growls as he once was

  • @ElectricTurkey1 Oh, ok. I stand corrected. Kind of a bummer, but his clean singing is such a great part of Opeth that I won't miss the growling too much. I still want more Bloodbath though.

  • Man bring back so memorys of being there

  • the new vocals style just made me really glad i didnt preorder the dvd. im not comparing him to Peter's vocals on the record, but his voice doing the same song on the wacken carnage

  • No there was something wrong... He sang it perfectly waaaaay back in 2005

  • @littleP90 It sounded fine at the actual show, i think its just the recording tbh

  • @moket123 Exactly, Definately doesnt sound how I remember at the show so it must be the recording

  • @Glanarr To clear it up as there is some discussion about this. The recording is an onstage multi-channel capture as it was performed, it has been mixed and mastered and cleaned up granted, but a great sound was achieved by the Bloodbath studio engineer who has I believe worked on a few of the Opeth, Katatonia and Bloodbath studio albums . Personally I feel that the vocals are pretty good, maybe not what was before with Peter, but as a package the sound is great.

  • @TheDarkBox It's just that the vocals sound completely different to what they sounded like during the actual performance. :/

  • @TheDarkBox Im not saying they sound bad or anything, just different.

  • @moket123 Understood, and this is something that happens quite a lot. When you are at a gig the ambient sound and how the audio is absorbed by a few thousand people as well as a "memory" of the gig all contribute to this. The recording is made by taking the onstage feed from the mic, then cleaned and worked on to produce as good a 'live' sound as possible, mixed with all the other elements (another 48 channels or so). What you hear is what was recorded and performed..

  • His vocals are fine, there just not the same singer as on the album so they wont sound exactly the same.

  • What was up with his vocals that weekend?

  • @samathanwataguan I dont think it was that weekend. I think he's losing his growls. The Royal Albert Hall DVD sounded a bit weird too. The new Opeth Album isnt supposed to have any growls either.

  • @ElectricTurkey1 Now you mention it =/

  • vocals sounding a bit off, still aswesome though

  • Awesommeee! I was there front row.

  • I can see my head at 3:04! Hah!

  • amazing!!!!!
