Should work with just about *any* camera at all, web-, digital- and video cameras, the like. Can't say anything about polaroids and such, but those are nowadays pretty much extinct.
No, near infrared light is always there. It is a major component of the sun's light. If shining near infrared light at your camera ruined it, you could never use it outside.

This is a Canon S50, but it should work with most digital cameras.
