"Manufactured Triumph!" Fantastic! One of my favorite episodes from the last season of DS9.
I especially enjoy the last shot when the slow-motion image of the autographed ball fades into the station exterior. The ball fits snugly between all six pylons. And, which music is that you used at the end?
One thing was missing, I thought. That was where Dax (likely mimicking the antecedent gymnast, Emony) runs up the wall and catches the ball while flipping backwards.
Very nice, though you left out Sisko getting angry at one of Odo's calls. "You can't tell me that ball was over the plate! What were you doing, regenerating?"
The real joke would have been Sisko telling the Vulcan that even Billy Martin knew enough not to actually put his hands on an umpire. Billy kicked dirt on their shoes, but he never actually manhandled an ump.
Billy Martin had more self control than the Vulcan. That is just F*cking hilarious.
best star trek episode ever...and there were no space bits in it, u kinda forget that there are aliens playing baseball, jus characters playing...what a classic...pure roddenberry
Not that I don't agree with the fact that Roddenberry left a legacy, but Roddenberry had nothing to do with this episode. He was long gone by the time "Take Me Out To the Holosuite" was produced...
The only thing that bothered me with this episode (and I do mean the ONLY thing) was Bashir is supposed to be geneticly engineered. More strength, more coordination, ect. He's always smoking O'Brian in darts, and yet when he plays baseball against a group of Vulcans, he gets totally destroyed just like his teammates. I would have thought Bashir and Worf for that matter would have shined on their team, but nope. They sucked. Just an observation.
You forget that Vulcans are considerably strongly than Humans. In addition, these Vulcans are trained in Baseball, giving them quite an advantage against even Worf's strength.
I just realized something else, it's also against the rules to make a batting order substitution in the middle of an inning. That should have been an out.
you can make a substitution whenever you want. (pitch hitter or runner). However, once a player has been in the game and substituted, he can not longer be placed back into the game. The ONLY rule they broke by bringing in rom was he wasn't on the original roster at the start of the game. By rule, all baseball players that might possibly play must be on the active roster before the start of the game. This must be submitted to the umpire, so they can't bring in a random substitution.
Thanks. I thought that you could bring in a pinch hitter as long as you made the change before the start of your batting order and a pinch runner only for an injury. I guess I was wrong. If Rom wasn't on the original roster, what's the penalty for trying to bring him in?
And since you know baseball rules, robnum1, am I right about a missed base being a forced play without a nedd to tag?
I don't know if anyone else has said this, but I'll put it in anyway. If a player misses a base, it's a forced play and you don't have to tage them. They're out as soon as you touch the base while holding the ball.
The "Epic music" clip at the end is from the Finnish group Nightwish song called "Ghost Love Score." The lyrics that follow (which the editor did not include) are eerily appropriate for the scene:
If Stark Trek was supposed to be all serious then we wouldn't have the greatness that is Q and personally I would rather die then live in a world without Q
Star Trek isn't all about space exploration. If TNG didn't have its funny moments (Data's Day, Captain's Holiday, The Outrageous Okona, etc.) then it would be the same as deleting this ridiculously funny episode from DS9.
Notice football and basketball and hockey are never mentioned in Star Trek.
Baseball, Trek says, "died," but is still played recreationally and talked about in a few TNG and DS9 episodes.
Because in a utopian Trek universe, there is still some time on a nice, warm summer day (even if it's made in a holodeck) for men and women to play what really is a boy's game.
"It's what makes America, America!" as aposed for killing millions for oil, getting fat, polluting the environment, bullying every country that does not meet your totatalarian idealogies and lying continuisly
This is an example of why Star Trek was always a favorite show of mine. Great creativity. Even my elderly parents loved this show while most scifi left them bored and uninterested.
I bet the cast had a blast with this one :P
