Australia forms part of Oceania - which is a seperate topic - and a man-made term and referring to a political, social, geographic or economic grouping, depending on the context in which you are using it. One could likely go to any of the other continents and similary group surrounding islands etc and dream up new names to call them by. There is no standard definition of how many continents are there the maximum number of continents range from 7 down to 4 combination's. I could have a 4 continent model These are:

Eurafrasia: consists of Asia Europe and Africa which becomes a super continent.

The Americas: Consists of North and South America

Oceania: Consisting of Australia and the pacific islands

and finally Antarctica.

This model is never taught at schools and the reason being it causes controversy.
