i agree to, 1984 is hands down a perfect record, this song is just killer, house of pain, top jimmy, just put it on and have some beers, will pick you up for sure
@termsofusepolice this song is an early demo song, so it's OLDER than you think, the beginning to me sounds like a nod to Randy Rhoads Diary Of A Madman. I don't think that intro was on the earlier demo version.
@citlaltlamina thanks for the most part everyone was drunk on the 1984 tour anything before that was mind blowing they use to blow sabbath off stage every night in 78' says ozzy
Thanks again. I've heard something of that historic tour, two of my favorites rockstar singers in one night. Fantastic!, man, i'll search for that material, if exist any record of couse i'd like to check it. Very much thanks a lot!!
Fuckin' VH Classic.... I love Roth and Hagar not for Cherone.... VH needs MIKE.... Bring back Mike, and I don't care who The Voice is.... Roth or Hagar is the same for me....
@markfundingsland Dont hold your breath as much as I love Ed him and his sister are not hungry musicians anymore they are greedy buissness men. Just look at Ed striping everything he can get his hands on.Or that 25,000 franky replica which plays like shit from what I hear that you can build or have someone build for around 800 bucks
@johnnybeane agreed. roth kinda pisses me off, he always misses his mark with the vocals, changes melodys, no wonder ed and al got so fed up with him. hopefully hes grown up. i didnt think he was the problem on the 07 tour, ed was very hit and miss, but thats an alcoholic for you,
Both Roth and Hagar took VH to the apex that they could. For that level, there will always be a debate. It boils down to the street (Roth) or love (Hagar). I prefer both.
I don't care what anyone says...."Girl Gone Bad" HANDS DOWN is Eddie Van Halen at the top of his game....his finest hour!! I get chills everytime I listen to it....He redifined what the electric guitar could do, but with "Girl Gone Bad", he even outdid himself....Unbelievable guitar playing!!!!
@DuaLeaD Totally agree! When Hendrix died everybody said it was impossible for another guitar player to change the guitar like Hendrix did, it was deemed mission impossible. Well in less than 10 years since Hendrix's death EVH didn't only change the guitar he revolutionised it! He didn't knock down walls he destroyed them!! It's now over 30 years since EVH revolutionised the guitar, I've yet to see & hear anything new in the guitar since EVH. Who's the king? KING EDWARD VAN HALEN!!
@DuaLeaD Actually what Eddie did on Girl Gone Bad is let his Allan Holdsworth influence bubble to the top more than usual. Holdsworth defined what guitar could do a long time ago.
@DuaLeaD That riff started out as an improv between Ed and Al in the middle of "Somebody get me doctor" on the 82' tour and then turned into this. Yes, I agree. Awesome indeed.
@MacEricG You know, I've tried telling peopole that he sounded pretty darned good on the RE tour, especially compared to the old days. Back then he was either too drunk, or seemed to not try very hard to follow his own melody from the album versions. I saw 2 RE tour shows, I thought he was really good, and tried hard. Overall he seemed kind of humble and very appreciative to be back. And still just cocky enough. Good story at VHND.com, Ed and Wolfie at a club last night, Wolf on drums.
Man, Eddie was on the top of his game back then. Just raw guitar, testosterone playing. Nobody could touch him then. As for the earlier poster, this can't be a prog tune, it grooves too hard. That's the thing about Eddie, he was technically great but he didn't play like nerd rock. He had serious GROOVE and SWING.
I give Dave a pass. Shit, I sing backup in my band while playing drums and it's not easy trying to sound good just 2 nights a week. Dave is doing flips, kicks, dancing, etc. playing 4 nights a week, 3-4 hour sets. This is why sometimes you hear him sound great, and sometimes sloppy. Even great singers like Steve Perry/Journey had off nights, and that dude didn't barely move.
EDWARD at his best. I saw this tour as a 16 year old kid. This is a great video of a live performance. Thank's for posting. VAN HALEN rule's forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BOY! these guy rocked! When I think the crap bands of today using pre recorded material in their live shows makes me wanna cry. Van Halen were pure rock.
At this point in their career, VH were unfuckingtouchable and no one could come close. DLR play the vocals a bit too lazily but musically the track rips.
such an under-rated tune. i saw them on this tour. i was 15 and it blew my mind. i was bummed they didn't play "top jimmy" or "drop dead legs," but there's no confirmation that i know of that ever played those two songs live, so...
I said - where is the REST OF THIS TOUR? geeeeeeeeeeesus. We're talking bout VAN HALEN here on the biggest tour of their career??? SHAME there's no more!
Hey, remember the animated dude with the tophat and the mallet they used as the backdrop on that tour? There's a company in Los Angeles called Western Exterminators that they stole (or licensed) that from.
i seen these guys 6 times, Van Halen/Hagar...King Ed is what does it for me, being a musician, i only hear the Guitar!! and the guitar sound and style that differed from the Dave days was some of Ed's best...simply said, ED is what made this band, dont get me wrong, they all had talent, but if it wasnt for that slamming Guitar......he cleaned anybody's clock when he had Frankenstrat in his hands!!!! Girl Gone Bad, classic example
@davinci5152 If u think this is bad for Dave, watch the US Festival. He was piss drunk stumbling around, singing wrong, forgetting words, looking like an idiot but the crowd ate it up.
@davinci5152 I agree. They turned into a bunch of calmed down, Dad-type guys and they became less exciting, but the music was more sophisticated. Van Halen was with David Lee Roth. They should have changed the name.
id say by this point roth was already contemplating quitting the band. these gigs were just paychecks for him in his eyes i would say. so of course his singing sucks...he was hammered, and didn't give a shit about the band anymore.
I love this song, but Dave's singing simply stinks. He doesn't try to make it sound good he just waddles around and gives a half ass attempt at singing. He was carried by the band. Who cares who's singing? I go to the show to see the King! Edward Van Halen!!
I love dave era vanhalen and ive gone to every tour since 1984 but been let down too many times by these guys.every interview ed gives he always says he writing new music.its been 12 years since last studio album and nearly 20 years since last good album f.u.c.k. how many more years are you gonna waste. please some new music! nobody talks about vanhalen look how acdc is as popular as they've ever been selling out stadiums all over the world. that could be vanhalen.
To this day, I just can't understand why there isn't a full concert video from the 1984 era. I can't understand why Eddie hasn't relesed something of reasonably good production value from that particular tour. It's the music, the stage wardrobe, just EVERYTHING....it was a special era in the band's history.
foreveralive: Agreed - they're so tight with everything in the VH camp. No good live albums from the original days, no good concert videos, no VH1 Classic Albums (for any of them) and they even declined to do a VH1 Behind The Music.
@foreveralive i think cause that was kinda around the time where dave and the band were pretty much on the verge of splitting apart, ..but yea 1984 was my fav album from van halen, it would be awesome to have a full live dvd from the 84 tour in good quality
damm right; they were on top of the world and they made it look so effortless; I know lotsa work went into what they did but every song was special; the best part is the world championship belt is there for the taking whenever they want it back (2007-2008)
When you see this it is a shame that due to what ever reasons that when in ways of music peek Vh was really hitting the top they feel out I always immagine what would of been like the next alburm with DLR be like, think of it Yanke rose with Eddie would been mind blowing anyway I am looking forward to the new alburm they are working on
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The beginning of the end....Red jock strap on the outside of pants...check....unusually large drum set... check....custom built Jack Daniels bass (that sounds like shit)..check....forgetable band complete
I could see that. I love this one and House Of Pain and supposedly those two are "throwaways" that didn't make it on VHII. The drumming on those two songs is phenomenal. Man, I miss the VH of those days.
Not to mention EVH won competition, classical piano competitions just by following his teacher's fingers and listening by ears...he placed in state win Cali competitions...a true fucking talent. a true gifted mutha fuckah!
Im so jealous, didnt get to see them till 1993 in sheffield, UK, (and then it was van hagar) this was the city that they played their first ever british show at whilst on tour with Black Sabath in 1978,
sadly hes right ther best year was unhappy i wish the greatest band had more time with roth they would have sold more and made better music but they werent happy so in came sammy he wasnt good but he wasnt THAT bad he was eh
that is just brilliant in every way, i woulda loved to see that , eddie playing so amazing then killer tone the whole band, was that there opening track on that footage? wow
Alex has had some of the greatest drum set ups in rock history!!! The moment I saw the 4 bass drum set up in the Jump video, it changed me forever!!! Big Al is THE MAN!!!!!
This is the dumbest comment ever. Crystal meth was used by the Germans and Japanese in World War II for sure and probably by tweaker idiots long before that.

Gilr Gone Bad was Technically in My opinion the Best tune on 1984 ...was it technically his best tune overall ? Aftershock would be another contender

I could see that. I love this one and House Of Pain and supposedly those two are "throwaways" that didn't make it on VHII. The drumming on those two songs is phenomenal. Man, I miss the VH of those days.

Wow...The legend at some of his best work. When Eddie pulls a stunt and disappoints, this makes me forget a lot.

i doesn't matter what stupid shit he does. what he did between 1977 and 1984 with the original line up has set his legacy as a guitar god in stone
phantom5691 2 years ago

On of the best shows I ever saw was VH in 1980, so good I went back to seem them again in 81, 82, 83, 84.
planetseven2001 2 years ago
Im so jealous, didnt get to see them till 1993 in sheffield, UK, (and then it was van hagar) this was the city that they played their first ever british show at whilst on tour with Black Sabath in 1978,
I was too young to go then :¬(

Same sad story for me in France....
But I also saw DLR with the Magic line-up : Steve Vaï, Billy Sheehan and Greg Bissonette...

They weren't having fun at this point in their career. Dave and Eddie were not happy with each other...they just masked it onstage...and did it well.
schniggitty1 2 years ago
sadly hes right ther best year was unhappy i wish the greatest band had more time with roth they would have sold more and made better music but they werent happy so in came sammy he wasnt good but he wasnt THAT bad he was eh

If you just went from having Diamond Dave as your lead singer to Sammy Hagar, you would become an alcoholic too!

What the hell happened to EVH? He went from ruling all the guitar universe to drunken goon overnight.

I hate to change the subject but: Has anyone ever stopped and noticed just how freakin ridiculous Alex Van Halen's drum kit is???
phillyslasher 2 years ago 6
Alex has had some of the greatest drum set ups in rock history!!! The moment I saw the 4 bass drum set up in the Jump video, it changed me forever!!! Big Al is THE MAN!!!!!
Champane97 2 years ago 2
...And how ridiculously huge the whole stage is! Alex is on top of a mountain in the middle of a field where the rest of the band runs around!

This is the dumbest comment ever. Crystal meth was used by the Germans and Japanese in World War II for sure and probably by tweaker idiots long before that.
