Back then he was either too drunk, or seemed to not try very hard to follow his own melody from the album versions. I saw 2 RE tour shows, I thought he was really good, and tried hard. Man, Eddie was on the top of his game back then. Just raw guitar, testosterone playing. Nobody could touch him then. As for the earlier poster, this can't be a prog tune, it grooves too hard. I give Dave a pass. Shit, I sing backup in my band while playing drums and it's not easy trying to sound good just 2 nights a week. Dave is doing flips, kicks, dancing, etc. playing 4 nights a week, 3-4 hour sets.  This is why sometimes you hear him sound great, and sometimes sloppy. Even great singers like Steve Perry/Journey had off nights, and that dude didn't barely move.

I can't vouch for that claim as I wasn't there.. but I wish I had seen them then. Because DLR was completely fucked up on the 1984 tour.

Having said that.. I'll still take any DLR video over anything with Van Hagar.
