This is a great monument to my realtions who are Buried in the Broken Hill, NSW, Australia all have passed on wih miners problems my heart goes out to all undergrounders
wow that blew me away. what an amazing tribute to miners. we lost 29 miners here in new zealand a few months ago. that is a tribute to out lost men. thank you so much for sharing
@1991ncw I actually only looked this up because I am a massive trailer park boys fan, and wanted to hear the whole song. However, it's quite a good song, and coming from a mining family, I can relate to it quite well. (Trailer Park Boys FTW!)
The Men of the Deeps is a choir of working and retired coal miners from the island of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, Canada. Organized in 1966 as part of Cape Breton's contribution to Canada's Centennial Year (1967), the group's inception was an effort by the people of Cape Breton to preserve in song some of the rich folklore of that island's coal mining communities.
My father worked 42 years mostly underground and the last few years on the surface.Rita does an incredible job telling the story of the men who mined coal..''.He'll tell you of the hardships that were his.".....So many good men and boys died in the pits
I first heard about rita mcneil being made fun of on south park for being monstrously obese. when i looked up a picture of her, I laughed. but when i first heard her SING, i instantly felt bad. her voice is truly beautiful.
coming from a scottish mining family when i heard this song sung last night for the first time by a customer in the social club i work in i had to check it out and i love it ......AMASING song

I live in the UK and love this song. I still have it on 7" vinyl record. It's an amazing song. I think it's the only hit that Rita had in the UK which is a shame.
people seem to forget that this song made top of the pops in the Uk. I think Rita is still alive. Someplace somewhere I have a very beautiful cassette of her songs. I think it's a bit unfair to make it political.
This song represents the struggle of so many workers. For many, it is a testimony of time spent making a living, although for miners it is even more of a hardship fret with so much life taking danger. I am so glad Rita created this song, Thank you Rita for your understanding. I include it in my workers union website (United Steeworkers) Ron at the elkoecho.blogspot.
@TheGazban yes, i'm in the uk. i think rita has a beautiful, crystal clear voice. i have all her cd's. i wrote to her a few years back. i could not believe the lovely letter she sent me back. a true gem of a woman.
We lost 29 miners at Pike River, New Zealand, 10 days ago. Four subsequent explosions means that the mine is now on fire and rescue has moved to retrieval when Search and Rescue teams can ever get below. This adds another depth of poignancy to a brilliant song, and it brings the message tragically home again.
Rita is an absolute sweetheart - I've had the good fortune to meet her twice back in the '90's and attended her concerts and had the chance to chat with her. When we (my mum and I) saw her the second time backstage she remembered us and gave us the biggest hugs, it's something I will always remember and treasure. Rita and I have corresponded and she has been very kind in sending me her CD's - Rita is a Canadian treasure and icon. Love you Rita.
@huppypuppy Rita has a heart of gold and she is so very humble and kind - I hope you get the chance to meet her when you go to Canada - if you go when her Tea Rooms are open you have a very good chance of meeting her then.
Rita's was the first ever concert I went to, I was 13 (23 yrs ago) and I went with my Mum.. She was fantastic and inspired me to be confident within myself and use the talent God gave me :-) I hope she has had a lovely life.. God Bless the big lady with the big voice xx
@AndySword You Sir, are so rude. Not only do Presidents and dignitaries get recognitions, but so deserved are those who work jobs that you consider mere "miners and firefighters" worthy of recognition. Comments like yours only serve to degrade working people and that is not acceptable. Rise to the level of human intelligence where you will also be recognized for your efforts in this world. Life is too short to bump everyone off your list, as that will happen by natural death.
