  • A tribute to the lost 29 miners of Pike River New Zealand

  • was rita a miner ?

  • @richcunn The men in the backing choir were coal miners - Rita has always performed the most wonderful and inspiring music!

  • "quite a good song"! For God's sake, give me a break. It's a wonderful song and sung with all the heart and soul of a marvelous singer. I loved it.

  • wow that blew me away. what an amazing tribute to miners. we lost 29 miners here in new zealand a few months ago. that is a tribute to out lost men. thank you so much for sharing

  • lol...... trailer park boys

  • @1991ncw I actually only looked this up because I am a massive trailer park boys fan, and wanted to hear the whole song. However, it's quite a good song, and coming from a mining family, I can relate to it quite well. (Trailer Park Boys FTW!)

  • The group with her "The Men of the Deeps" was brought to the surface by Rita as I recall.

  • @rdvqc All the members of The Men of the Deeps Coal Miner's Choir are retired miners!

  • The Men of the Deeps is a choir of working and retired coal miners from the island of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, Canada. Organized in 1966 as part of Cape Breton's contribution to Canada's Centennial Year (1967), the group's inception was an effort by the people of Cape Breton to preserve in song some of the rich folklore of that island's coal mining communities.

  • My father worked 42 years mostly underground and the last few years on the surface.Rita does an incredible job telling the story of the men who mined coal..''.He'll tell you of the hardships that were his.".....So many good men and boys died in the pits

  • I love her voice

  • I first heard about rita mcneil being made fun of on south park for being monstrously obese. when i looked up a picture of her, I laughed. but when i first heard her SING, i instantly felt bad. her voice is truly beautiful.

  • I love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • coming from a scottish mining family when i heard this song sung last night for the first time by a customer in the social club i work in i had to check it out and i love it ......AMASING song

  • coming from a scottish mining family when i heard this song sung last night for the first time by a customer in the social club i work in i had to check it out and i love it ......AMASING song

  • I live in the UK and love this song. I still have it on 7" vinyl record. It's an amazing song. I think it's the only hit that Rita had in the UK which is a shame.

  • I have been to Rita's Tea Room -- I was SO nervous that I would see her - lol!

I am her #1 American fan ;-) Cape Breton is lovely.

    Love you - Rita!

    ek

  • people seem to forget that this song made top of the pops in the Uk. I think Rita is still alive. Someplace somewhere I have a very beautiful cassette of her songs. I think it's a bit unfair to make it political.

  • This song represents the struggle of so many workers. For many, it is a testimony of time spent making a living, although for miners it is even more of a hardship fret with so much life taking danger. I am so glad Rita created this song, Thank you Rita for your understanding. I include it in my workers union website (United Steeworkers) Ron at the elkoecho.blogspot.

  • @rfish54 Yes there are 6 of us

  • Are there any Rita fans in the UK?

  • @TheGazban yes, i'm in the uk. i think rita has a beautiful, crystal clear voice. i have all her cd's. i wrote to her a few years back. i could not believe the lovely letter she sent me back. a true gem of a woman.

  • Luv You Rita, beautiful song brings tears to ones eyes

  • Just a very moving song, thinking of all the miners we have lost.

  • We lost 29 miners at Pike River, New Zealand, 10 days ago. Four subsequent explosions means that the mine is now on fire and rescue has moved to retrieval when Search and Rescue teams can ever get below. This adds another depth of poignancy to a brilliant song, and it brings the message tragically home again.

  • Rita Mac is one of a kind ;) long live real canadian talent

  • Rita is an absolute sweetheart - I've had the good fortune to meet her twice back in the '90's and attended her concerts and had the chance to chat with her. When we (my mum and I) saw her the second time backstage she remembered us and gave us the biggest hugs, it's something I will always remember and treasure. Rita and I have corresponded and she has been very kind in sending me her CD's - Rita is a Canadian treasure and icon. Love you Rita.

  • @SaskiaCornell I agree with you! I wish to meet Rita when I visit Canada!

  • @huppypuppy Rita has a heart of gold and she is so very humble and kind - I hope you get the chance to meet her when you go to Canada - if you go when her Tea Rooms are open you have a very good chance of meeting her then.

  • Rita's was the first ever concert I went to, I was 13 (23 yrs ago) and I went with my Mum.. She was fantastic and inspired me to be confident within myself and use the talent God gave me :-) I hope she has had a lovely life.. God Bless the big lady with the big voice xx

  • she looks like betty from coronation street

  • @tixxstixx If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all - you are so judgmental - shame on you.

    Saskia Cornell.

  • @AndySword where did firefighters come from? Did your wife leave you for one?

  • @AndySword You Sir, are so rude. Not only do Presidents and dignitaries get recognitions, but so deserved are those who work jobs that you consider mere "miners and firefighters" worthy of recognition. Comments like yours only serve to degrade working people and that is not acceptable. Rise to the level of human intelligence where you will also be recognized for your efforts in this world. Life is too short to bump everyone off your list, as that will happen by natural death.

  • ANDY YOU ARE A MOREON alabama sang about workin men every thing from farmers to truck drivers

numerus songs were made about the people at the world traid center

or john Mcdermott about soldjers or terry sumption and the highway of heros and the list goes on just because somone did not write a song about your pathetic life dose not mean that you have to get all winy about it and start calling them Cunts??? you sound like a little2 year old child who did not get a candy

  • @AndySword ...I heard a George Jones song some time ago...and again a few days ago.... not sure the exact title but it says"You're an asshole"....suits you to a "T"... you are probably one of those who wouldn't be able to keep up with those guys for just one minute... "get a REAL life"...ASSHOLE...LOL... what a name...thats what you have to stick out is it...lol...

  • Rita MacNeil is one of the most talented singer/songwriters and one of the most beautiful people you could ever meet - she is so humble with a heart of gold.

    Saskia

  • Wonderful song I love, Rita and The Men Of The Deep!

  • This is such a poignant song and the Coal Miners that are singing with, Rita are the best!

  • god bless them

  • wat a lovely song

  • God Bless miners everywhere

  • My goodness, what a song. Coal is such a bad fuel these days, but, the men who went underground, down inside them mines, and women too these days I don't know. They had guts tho, I could not do it, and so dangerous. What is the signifigance of the Men of the Deeps turning their lamps?

  • THIS SONG IS DEDICATED TO ALL THE MINORS THAT RISK THEIR LIVES AND GO UNDER GROUND TO FEED THEIR FAMILIES. YOU HAVE MY UP MOST RESPECT!!!!!

  • @chrissept21 Absolutely, touring and recording a new album, and running her Tea Rooms in Big Pond.

  • J'ai lu une partie de la biographie de madame Rita Mcneil, cette Dame n'a pas seulement une voix merveilleuse, elle est une femme courageuse et intelligente.

  • Every time I hear this I become very emotional as I grew up and still live in the 'Risca North' and 'Nine Mile Point collieries area.

    Tony - Wattsville.

  • R. I. P Daddy

  • This song reminds me of trailer park boys when Rita is helping Julian and Ricky harvest Marijuana. who would have thought Rita is a pot head

  • haha no kidding eh?

  • thank you big time

    Scotland forever

  • This song makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on edge. Rita MacNeil is a genius by herself but this is really something else. Class.

  • I swear that would bring a tear to a glass eye. I lost it when the miners turned the lamps on their caps. God bless the miners everywhere.

  • @ArkRed1 This song is so appropriate for the trapped Chilean miners who will be making it back up the surface I believe some time today 13th Oct

  • @SaskiaCornell It was ... I just wish that the same could have been said for those in Pike River mine in New Zealand ... wish them eternal peace.

  • Thank you for uploading this video. Rita and Stanley are two of Cape Bretons best kitchen partiers. The first time I ever heard Rita or Stanley was in John MacLeods Kitchen. This is why we stay up all night when we drink. Great job Nipper, I hope you read this. Steve M.
